The third (or it the second? Thanks 15.1a) workout of the CrossFit Open is complete, and while opinions on seeing a repeat of 14.2 differed greatly among the affiliate community, two people who certainly enjoyed it were Natalie Newhart and Josh Bridges. Newhart and Bridges won the workout in the women’s and men’s divisions respectively, each pocketing a cool $2,015 for their efforts. Both athletes demolished the top scores from 14.2 last year—representing an overall improvement among the entire community from 2014 to 2015.

2015-Josh Bridges (435)

2014-Irving Hernandez (396)

2015-Natalie Newhart (441)

2014-Camille Leblanc-Bazinet (404)

Yes, it’s true, this CrossFit stuff is working and we are getting fitter. After two weeks of competition, here’s how the leaderboard shapes up.

Looking ahead to 15.3

Yesterday Dave Castro posted this picture to his Instagram account, and everyone started losing their minds:

dave castro instagram 15_3

Yes, that’s a pistol on top of a jump rope. As you can imagine, everyone started assuming that 15.3 would carry some form of double-unders and pistols. After all, Castro has been known to drop hints for Open workouts in previous years (like this wood chipper cameo a few days before the announcement of 14.4).

Well, we think that’s too straightforward for ol’ Castro.

Prediction for 15.3

As many repetitions in 10 minutes of:
40 Double-Unders
20 Thrusters at ascending weight*
10 Burpees
The first round of thrusters will be performed at 95/65lbs. Each consecutive round will add weight to the previous round’s weight.
Round 1: 95/65lbs
Round 2: 115/80lbs
Round 3: 135/95lbs
Round 4: 155/110lbs
Round 5: 175/125lbs
Continue to add 20/15lbs for each following round until time expires.

The Reasoning:

We know, we know—we didn’t include pistols. Simply put, we don’t think that we’ll see that advanced gymnastic move just yet in the Open—but if you take Castro’s Instagram activity as scripture then please feel free to start working on them post-haste.

However, we do think that it’s time to start warming up your dubs. Last week we predicted that double-unders would be featured in 15.2, but given it’s absence we’re making another prediction for dubs in this next workout. But our sure-fire bet resides on the inclusion of the fabled thruster. As we wrote last week, it’s incredibly rare to have an Open workout without a barbell movement, and there aren’t many that remain. Realistically, we’re looking at three options: power cleans, shoulder to overhead and thrusters. We all know how much Castro loves to torture us with thrusters, and a perfect compliment to that movement is the burpee. We saw how devastating they could be as a combination in 14.5 last year, and given the torture success of that workout, we think that Castro will pair them once more—albeit with a slight twist.

One should always make room for surprises in an Open workout, so we decided to get imaginative and utilize an ascending weight scheme for the thrusters—similar to the format of 14.3 last year. Adding weight to the bar always adds an extra element of spice to a workout, and the elite athletes should be able to make it to the 5th round (if they’re moving at a 2:00 min per round pace).

Lastly, consider the athletes that are still to compete in live announcements this year. Bridges and Panchik put on quite the show in 14.4 last year—which was a chipper—and they’re set to throwdown once more next week. It’s more than likely that that workout will also be a chipper. And, to wrap up the 2015 Open, Camille Leblanc-Bazinet, Sam Briggs and Annie Thorisdottir will throw down in Vegas for 15.5. That’s a show-stopping line-up, so expect to see some ‘sexy’ movements for that one (like muscle-ups and (gasp) pistols).

Even if this workout isn’t announced on Thursday—which would be an epic shock—we still think that it looks incredibly fun, so feel free to attack it on your own time! Good luck for 15.3!
