Predicting CrossFit Open Workout 17.3

Written by William Imbo

For only the second time in CrossFit Open history, last week’s workout featured dumbbells. This time they double the stakes and had us work with two of them—specifically 50-ft. lunges with the dumbbells in the front rack. For many though, 17.2 was more about muscle-ups than dumbbells. According to the CFG Facebook page, “More than 100,000 athletes got at least one muscle-up in #17point2. More than 20,000 women got at least one muscle-up, 208 of whom were 14-15-year-olds and 179 of whom were 50-54-year-olds.”

Taking the top spots this week are 2013 CrossFit Games champion Samantha Briggs and 3x Games competitor Jonne Koski with 240 and 225 reps, respectively. After two weeks, Briggs sits at the top of the leaderboard with a third place finish in week one and an overall victory this week. On the men’s side, 2016’s third fittest man Patrick Vellener is holding the number one spot.

Today we head to San Antonio, Texas to watch the live announcement of 17.3 as Fittest Man on Earth Mat Fraser takes on  Cole Sager and Scott Panchik, 2016’s fifth and sixth fittest men, respectively.

Of course, before the workout gets announced—our prediction. So far CrossFit Games director Dave Castro provided us with this clue:

17.3

  1. I don’t think chest to bar pullups. Bar MUs was last week.
I DO think thrusters will be in this one. I personally don’t think it’s bad guess to see thrusters with DBs, so sure. I also think it’s going to mix in cals on the rower. People will probably cry about that as it’s an expensive piece of equipment, but it’s been a main go to on the main site for MANY years and if you CF long enough, you’ll want to get one.
If not, it could be thrusters with the DBs and bodyweight movements like C2B pullups, and Open Style pushups… maybe 4 per round then 6 per round, etc. similar to this site’s guess.
