In a recent video, DeLauer explained how this inexpensive supplement might influence everything from blood sugar control to brain health and even cardiovascular protection.
“Some of the most interesting effects of beta-alanine have nothing to do with muscle pumps,” he said. “They have nothing to do with reps or gym performance, and they’re not really talked about because they’re not the popular thing to talk about.”

Why Beta-Alanine Isn’t Just About Workouts
Beta-alanine doesn’t work in isolation. Once consumed, it combines with histidine inside muscle tissue to form carnosine, a compound stored primarily in skeletal muscle.
While carnosine is well-known for buffering acidity during intense exercise, its metabolic and cellular effects extend far beyond performance enhancement.

More recent research published in Amino Acids exposed human skeletal muscle cellsโincluding cells from people with type 2 diabetesโto carnosine. Normally, insulin stimulation increased methylglyoxal by around 50% in diabetic cells. But when carnosine was present, that increase dropped to just 10%.

A study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition looked at beta-alanine supplementation in older adults aged 55 to 92.
After 90 days, the beta-alanine group improved fatigue resistance by about 29%. The placebo group saw no change.

For older adults, this translates into better endurance in daily life, reduced fall risk, and greater independence.

DeLauer highlighted how beta-alanine works synergistically with creatine, especially for people over 40.
For people that are over 40, beta-alanine is a tremendous resilience builder, and creatine is a tremendous energy builder. So, when you combine these things, you’re actually giving yourself a little bit of youth again.
Beta-alanine combats inflammatory signals and builds resilience, while creatine provides a literal energy reserve. As people age, creatine stores declineโoften because they’re eating less protein and red meat.
VO2 Max Improvements and Cardiovascular Health
VO2 max isn’t just an athletic metric. It’s one of the strongest predictors of all-cause mortality.
Higher VO2 max means better oxygen delivery, better mitochondrial function, and better cardiovascular efficiency.
Another study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition examined beta-alanine supplementation during high-intensity interval training. Both groups improved initially, but only the beta-alanine group continued to see increases in VO2 peak, time to fatigue, and total workout output with longer supplementation.

More recent research examined beta-alanine supplementation in people around 70 years old. Those with lower baseline cognitive scores showed improvements in cognitive testing over 10 weeks.

Cardioprotection When Paired with Taurine
Animal research published in the Electronic Journal of Biotechnology found that combining beta-alanine and taurine reduced cardiac damage after ischemia (heart attack).
The combination reduced infarct size, lowered oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling, and increased antioxidants like catalase and glutathione.
While animal data requires caution before direct human translation, the mechanism makes sense. Taurine supports calcium handling and cardiac stability, while carnosine buffers oxidative and inflammatory stress.

Beta-alanine is water-soluble, making overdosing unlikelyโexcess is excreted. But consistent use over time builds carnosine levels where benefits accumulate.
