Getting into elite shape isn’t just about showing up to the gym and hoping for the best.
It requires a strategic approach that goes far beyond what most people think is necessary.
In a recent episode of their podcast “Unfinished Business,” fitness experts Audrey and her co-host broke down seven critical non-negotiables that separate those who achieve exceptional physiques from those who spin their wheels year after year.
These aren’t the typical “eat more protein” tips you’ve heard a thousand times—these are the overlooked fundamentals that actually make or break your transformation.

Women Aren’t Training Hard Enough
The first major mistake? Not training with sufficient intensity, especially among women.
There’s exercising, and then there’s actually training. They’re not the same thing.
If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.
- Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
- Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
- Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle
If you are trying to build muscle, you need to be between one and three reps shy of failing. That means you literally cannot do another rep safely.
Progressive overload—gradually increasing resistance or reps over time—is essential. Picking up those same 15-pound dumbbells week after week won’t cut it.
Audrey shared her own frustration: spending six or seven days per week in the gym for two hours at a time, yet seeing minimal results because she wasn’t following progressive overload principles.
Now training just three days weekly with proper intensity? Significantly better results.
The Intensity Gap Between Genders
While men may naturally gravitate toward higher training intensity initially, most people—regardless of gender—don’t train within the window that actually stimulates muscle growth.
It took these coaches years to discover what true training intensity feels like. Once they did, everything changed.
Track Data, Not Emotions
Making decisions based on feelings rather than facts is a recipe for stagnation.
You can’t manage what you don’t measure.
Think you’re eating high protein? Clients regularly discover they’re consuming 40 grams when they believed it was 140 grams.
A lot of our clients will come in and they’re saying, “I’m eating a high protein diet.” And then they actually start tracking their food, weighing it accurately. And they realize that they thought they were eating 140 grams of protein and they’re actually eating 40 grams of protein.
Two eggs for breakfast? That’s only 12 grams of protein—nowhere near the 25-40 grams women should target per meal.
The problem extends beyond protein. Products labeled “high protein” often aren’t. Peanut butter is a prime example.
Take one week to track everything. Gain awareness around what you’re actually consuming, not what you think you’re eating.
Sleep Is Non-Negotiable
Elite physiques are built during recovery, not just in the gym.
Sleep quality impacts every aspect of body composition—metabolism, hormones, appetite, and cravings.
Getting seven or seven-and-a-half hours is decent. But consistency matters more than most realize.
Consistent sleep and wake times, that is such an underrated thing. We have this circadian rhythm that our body thrives best on. So if you’re going to bed at 11:00 p.m. or you’re going to bed at the next night 9 and then it’s 1:00 a.m. your body is like, “What the [ __ ] is going on?”
Your body needs specific amounts of deep sleep, REM sleep, and light sleep. Erratic schedules disrupt all three.
Poor Sleep Sabotages Fat Loss
Research shows that just one night of poor sleep dramatically impacts hunger and fullness cues.
After insufficient rest, people consume an average of 385 extra calories the next day—nearly an entire meal for some individuals.
Appetite increases, satiety signals weaken, and cravings intensify. That’s a devastating combination when trying to stay lean.
Compliance Beats Perfection Every Time
The best plan is the one you’ll actually follow.
Too many people chase optimization instead of execution. They try copying someone else’s routine without considering their own lifestyle.
There are a thousand ways to skin the cat when it comes to taking care of your health, taking care of your body, and it’s what really suits you and your lifestyle the most that’s going to allow you to actually repeat it through the busy seasons.
Look at extreme optimizers like Bryan Johnson. His routines might be ideal for longevity, but they’re completely unrealistic for most people.
If overwhelming yourself leads to burnout and quitting, you’re worse off than someone who stuck to basics consistently.
The Ferrari With No Gas
Audrey put it perfectly: trying to follow a perfect plan you can’t stick to is like owning a Ferrari with no gas.
It looks impressive on the surface, but you’re going absolutely nowhere.
Two days per week of progressive resistance training for two years will deliver far better results than six days weekly for only eight weeks out of the year.
Movement Is Your Identity, Not Just Strategy
Elite physiques don’t come from hour-long gym sessions alone.
Daily movement throughout the entire day separates lean individuals from everyone else.
You can exercise for an hour but sit the remaining 23 hours. Your body composition won’t change dramatically.
Why? Because intentional exercise only accounts for roughly 5% of total daily calorie burn.
Meanwhile, NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis)—fidgeting, cleaning, walking, standing—accounts for about 15% of calories burned.
Double-Dip Your Activities
Don’t have time for walks? Stack activities.
- FaceTime while walking instead of sitting on the couch
- Watch TV on a walking pad or treadmill
- Take phone calls while pacing
- Listen to podcasts during workouts
A $200 walking pad might be one of the best investments for staying lean. Work while walking, and suddenly those 10,000 steps become achievable.
Elite Shape Demands Elite Discipline
Discipline isn’t about doing extraordinary things. It’s about keeping ordinary commitments.
Wake up when you say you will. Make your bed. Prepare presentable meals. Complete daily priorities.
All that stuff translates into other areas. We knew we were going to be able to manage certain things and be able to take on a venture such as building a business because we are disciplined in certain areas and we know that can translate.
Small commitments build self-trust. Your subconscious keeps receipts.
Skip making the bed, and you’re more likely to skip the gym later. Start strong, and momentum carries through.
Act Different, Get Different
Want an elite physique while acting like average people? Not happening.
Training Saturday at 5 p.m. when others are drinking feels good because you’re doing what others won’t.
Everyone wants the view. Few want the climb.
Nutrition Trumps Exercise for Fat Loss
The final non-negotiable might sting: you can’t out-train a bad diet.
Yes, strength training builds muscle and transforms your appearance. But exercise alone won’t overcome poor nutrition.
A single mini candy bar contains 150-300 calories. Burning that through exercise requires significant effort.
People show up to gyms year after year with minimal visible change because their nutrition hasn’t evolved.
You see a lot of people in the gym year after year, nothing really changes. They don’t look all that different. And it usually is because their nutrition hasn’t actually changed or they haven’t really dialed in their nutrition.
Exercise complements nutrition and delivers countless health benefits beyond appearance. But for body composition specifically, nutrition is the foundation.
Showing up to the gym consistently is a step in the right direction. But without the complete picture—especially dialed-in nutrition—you’ll never reach your full potential.
These seven non-negotiables aren’t glamorous. They’re not the shiny new supplements or trendy workout splits flooding social media.
They’re the unsexy fundamentals that separate people who achieve elite physiques from those who wonder why nothing changes despite their efforts.
