Doctor Crushes Garlic, Waits 5 Minutes, Then Uses It to Stabilize Heart Plaque (CT Scans Proved It Works in 55 People)

Heart disease kills more people globally than any other condition, yet a medical doctor and scientist claims most people are overlooking simple dietary strategies that could stabilize dangerous arterial plaque.

In a recent video, Dr. Michael Diamond—a physician with degrees in biochemistry and microbiology—shared three evidence-based nutritional approaches he says can prevent new plaque formation and stabilize existing blockages.

His recommendations center on foods you likely already have at home, prepared in very specific ways that matter more than most people realize.

But before diving into his protocol, he says understanding exactly where plaque sits in your arteries changes everything about how you approach the problem.

Understanding Arterial Plaque: Why Location Matters

Dr. Diamond uses a garden hose analogy to explain arterial anatomy. Your arteries have multiple layers with smooth inner walls when healthy.

When chronic inflammation from poor diet or high blood sugar creates damage, that smooth surface becomes rough and sticky. Cholesterol doesn’t just collect on top like grease in a drain—it works underneath the surface into the arterial wall itself.

FULL-BODY TRAINING

If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.

  • Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
  • Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
  • Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle

Here’s the critical part most people miss: The artery doesn’t narrow inward initially. Instead, it bulges outward to accommodate the plaque, keeping blood flow open.

That’s why you can carry this problem for decades feeling perfectly fine, then suddenly experience a cardiac event.

The hose essentially bulges, not inwards, but outwards. And it pushes the wall out to make room, and then the channel inside essentially stays open. So, the water still runs, your blood runs fine, nothing hurts, nothing shows up.

Your body creates what’s called a fibrous cap—essentially a “lid”—to cover the plaque buildup. When that lid tears, the greasy plaque core meets your blood, triggering immediate clotting that can shut the artery down in minutes.

Repair #1: Strengthening the Fibrous Cap with Garlic

The first repair isn’t about shrinking plaque—it’s about reinforcing that protective lid so it doesn’t rupture.

Dr. Diamond points to garlic as having the strongest human trial evidence for stabilizing dangerous plaque. But preparation method determines whether you get any benefit at all.

The Allicin Activation Window

When you crush garlic, it releases a compound called allicin—that sharp, pungent smell you recognize immediately.

Allicin reduces inflammation in artery walls and makes blood cells less sticky, reducing clot risk even if the fibrous cap tears.

From now onwards, crush or finely chop one, two cloves of raw garlic and just let it sit for 5 minutes without it touching the heat. And that 5 minutes is actually an activation window because the heat, let’s say you just start cooking it immediately, the allicin can be killed.

The protocol: Crush or finely chop 1-2 raw garlic cloves, let sit for 5 minutes, then stir into olive oil, lemon dressing, or consume directly before meals. Daily, not twice weekly.

What the Research Actually Shows

Dr. Diamond cites a randomized trial with 55 people with metabolic syndrome who received aged garlic extract or placebo. CT scans at baseline and one year later showed the garlic group had soft plaque reduced by 1.5% of the artery, while the placebo group increased by 0.2%.

The research on garlic and cardiovascular health is more nuanced than this single trial suggests. While some studies have found benefits, a 2020 review in Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine noted that results have been inconsistent across trials, with benefits varying based on garlic preparation, dosage, and patient population. The study Dr. Diamond references used 2,400 mg of aged garlic extract daily—a specific supplement formulation, not fresh garlic cloves.

The trial dose was aged garlic extract at 2,400 mg daily. While Dr. Diamond encourages fresh garlic in food, the actual research used a concentrated supplement form.

Important caveat: If you’re on blood thinners or heart medication, consult your doctor first, as garlic has blood-thinning properties.

Repair #2: Controlling Particle Number and Oxidation

Cholesterol doesn’t damage arteries on its own. It gets pushed into arterial walls, and the more particles circulating, the more gets deposited.

But there’s another factor: oxidative stress, which Dr. Diamond describes as “cellular rust.”

The Blood Test Your Doctor Probably Isn’t Ordering

Standard cholesterol panels measure the weight of cholesterol cargo. Dr. Diamond emphasizes asking for apolipoprotein B (ApoB) and Lp(a) tests instead.

Regular cholesterol test the weight of the cargo. ApoB essentially counts how many trucks are inside of that cargo. And then it’s the number of trucks arriving in your artery walls that decides how much it gets unloaded onto.

ApoB counts particle number—how many “trucks” are delivering cholesterol to artery walls. It’s a more accurate predictor of cardiovascular risk than standard LDL measurements.

Soluble Fiber: Your Cholesterol Sponge

Soluble fiber dissolves in your gut, forming a gel that absorbs cholesterol before it’s absorbed, then carries it out through waste.

Across randomized trials, about 10g daily of psyllium husk drops LDL by approximately 13 points. Ground flaxseeds provide similar benefits from a different source.

Key detail: Flaxseeds must be ground. Whole flaxseeds pass through your digestive system intact, providing zero benefit.

Polyphenols: Rust Inhibitors

Compounds giving berries and pomegranates their deep purple and red colors act as rust inhibitors, reducing how much LDL becomes oxidized.

The practical protocol:

  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseeds over meals daily
  • Or 10g psyllium husk with plenty of water
  • Daily handful of berries (frozen works and costs less)
  • Request ApoB and Lp(a) tests by name at your next blood draw
  • Retest in 6 months to track changes

Repair #3: Opening Your Arteries Within Hours

This repair works faster than the others—within approximately 3 hours rather than months or years.

Arteries aren’t rigid pipes. They can squeeze tighter or relax, directly affecting blood flow and pressure against that vulnerable fibrous cap.

The Nitric Oxide Connection

Your body produces nitric oxide to keep blood vessels relaxed. The raw material for making it comes from dietary nitrates, found overwhelmingly in leafy greens and beetroot.

More leafy greens and beetroot means more nitrate, which converts to more nitric oxide, causing vessels to relax and widen.

This isn’t metaphor. This is essentially your vessels changing through the food that you’re eating.

The Beetroot Juice Study

In a trial with 32 people with high blood pressure, drinking one cup of beetroot juice daily for 4 weeks dropped blood pressure by 7.7 points compared to placebo juice with nitrates removed.

That reduction roughly equals what a starting dose of blood pressure medication achieves.

Lower pressure means less force pushing against that fibrous cap with every heartbeat. In larger trials, people with high blood pressure pushed to tighter control saw:

  • 25% reduction in heart attacks, heart failure, and strokes
  • 27% reduction in death from any cause

Same plaque, dramatically different outcomes based solely on pressure management.

The protocol:

  • Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses

  • Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle
  • Large handful of leafy greens daily (rocket, spinach, kale) as the meal base, not a side
  • Dress with olive oil and crushed garlic—fat helps absorb nitrates
  • Purchase a home blood pressure monitor
  • Take readings sitting down, 2 minutes apart, twice
  • Record the average and share with your doctor

Home monitoring avoids “white coat syndrome” where clinical settings artificially elevate readings, and catches high blood pressure that might appear normal during brief office visits.

The Mediterranean Diet Evidence

Dr. Diamond references a large food trial with 7,400 high-risk people comparing a Mediterranean diet built on extra virgin olive oil against a low-fat diet.

Over 5 years, the olive oil group experienced roughly 30% fewer heart attacks, plus reduced strokes and cardiovascular deaths.

A second trial with 1,002 people who already had heart disease scanned neck arteries for 7 years. The Mediterranean diet group showed arterial wall thinning while the low-fat diet showed no change.

However, the wall thinned by only about a thousandth of an inch over 5 years, and total plaque amount didn’t change.

Setting Realistic Expectations: The Ceiling

Dr. Diamond is clear about what dietary interventions can and cannot achieve.

Food can reliably stop new plaques. It can stabilize what you have and then it can open up the vessels to make things easier. But, what it does not do is clear an artery out.

Even the strongest cholesterol medications stacked together for 2 years reduce plaque by just under 1% of the vessel.

What food reliably does:

  • Stops formation of new plaque
  • Stabilizes existing plaque
  • Opens vessels to reduce pressure
  • Strengthens the fibrous cap protecting against rupture

What food doesn’t do: Completely clear arteries or dissolve significant existing blockages

Putting It All Together: Your Daily Protocol

Dr. Diamond’s three-repair system—the lid, the number, and the opening—translates to specific daily actions:

Every Morning:

  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseeds over Greek yogurt with frozen berries
  • Or 10g psyllium husk with plenty of water

Every Main Meal:

  • Large base of leafy greens (not a small side)
  • 1-2 crushed raw garlic cloves (crushed and rested 5 minutes before use)
  • Extra virgin olive oil dressing
  • Handful of berries for dessert or as a snack

Regular Monitoring:

  • Home blood pressure readings (sitting, 2 minutes apart, average of two)
  • Blood tests including ApoB and Lp(a) every 6 months
  • Track changes rather than relying on single measurements

These aren’t heroic measures or expensive interventions. They’re strategic food choices backed by randomized trials, implemented consistently.

The difference between stable plaque you can live with for decades and a fibrous cap that tears tomorrow often comes down to inflammation levels, particle oxidation, and pressure against arterial walls—all factors influenced by what’s on your plate.
