Cut the range, you cut the exercise. You’re basically doing a different movement and calling it a pull-up. That doesn’t count.
Partial reps might feel easier on the ego. They deliver half the stimulus and create a completely different movement pattern that doesn’t transfer to actual pull-up strength.

The Scapular Pull-Up Fix
This corrective drill looks like almost nothing is happening, which is exactly why people skip it.
- Hang from the bar with arms completely straight
- Don’t bend elbows or knees
- Pull shoulder blades down toward hips
- Let them rise back up to starting position
- Repeat for 10 controlled reps
Perform these before regular pull-up sets. The movement teaches the back to fire first, with arms assisting second.
That sequence matters more than any grip variation.
Grip Width Isn’t the Game-Changer You Think It Is
Wide grip feels harder, so conventional wisdom says it must hit lats more effectively.

You’ve been torturing your joints for nothing. The real grip question has nothing to do with wide versus narrow. It’s whether your elbows are tracking properly through the movement.
Proper elbow tracking depends entirely on shoulder position—specifically, whether scapulae depress before the pull begins.

The Arched Back Position
Chest up, slight lean, spine extended. Keeps posterior chain muscles—lats, rhomboids, rear delts—engaged throughout the entire range of motion.
For lat and back development specifically, the arch position delivers superior results.
Some people say a rounded spine is dangerous. They’re thinking of a loaded deadlift. During a pull-up, your spine isn’t under load. The arch is fine.
Whether legs cross or remain uncrossed genuinely doesn’t matter much. What does matter is where the chest points at the top of each rep.
Aiming the chest toward the bar—rather than just clearing chin over bar—ensures proper lat engagement and thoracic extension.
Putting It All Together
Next session at the bar, implement these four corrections systematically:
- Start from a complete dead hang with arms fully extended
- Initiate with scapular depression before bending elbows
- Use a shoulder-width grip and stop experimenting with width
