Elite athletes are gathering in Abu Dhabi to prepare for something unprecedented in sports history: a competition where performance-enhancing drugs aren’t just allowed—they’re encouraged.

The Enhanced Games, scheduled to debut in May in Las Vegas, is turning conventional sports on its head by embracing substances banned everywhere else.

With million-dollar prizes for breaking world records and backing from billionaire investors including Peter Thiel, this controversial event is dividing the sporting world.

But as Olympic champions trade their clean credentials for chemical enhancement, experts warn the true cost may be measured in more than medals.

Where Olympic Dreams Meet Chemical Reality

At a sprawling sports complex in the United Arab Emirates, former Olympic medalists are spending months training under a radically different rulebook. Here, testosterone, EPO, growth hormone, and other banned substances are administered under medical supervision as athletes push toward what organizers call “true human potential.”

The competition focuses on three disciplines: swimming, sprinting, and weightlifting. Athletes can earn up to one million dollars by breaking world records in their events—records currently held by competitors who trained drug-free.

British swimmer Ben Proud, who won silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics, became the first UK athlete to join. His decision sparked immediate condemnation from British Aquatics.

I knew signing up to this was going to absolutely ruin my credibility as a traditional swimmer. And therefore the question is like you know why wouldn’t I mold myself to these new set of rules like why wouldn’t I take part in the study like be a part of the enhanced program to the full extent to be part of this new career.

Proud emphasized his frustration with traditional swimming’s financial limitations. Despite achieving ten consecutive podium finishes and recording more sub-22-second 50-meter freestyle swims than anyone in history, meaningful compensation remained elusive.

The Price of Performance: Banned for Life

World Aquatics made history last year as the first international sports federation to permanently ban any athletes, coaches, or officials participating in the Enhanced Games from their competitions.

Similar condemnation has followed from numerous sporting authorities worldwide. Yet athletes continue signing up, drawn by financial incentives that dwarf traditional prize money.

I’m getting more coverage now of my like of a retired athlete what I’m doing now with the enhanced games than I ever did in my whole entire career.

British sprinter Ree Prescott, who competed at Tokyo 2020, faced severe backlash from UK Athletics after joining. He remains defiant about his choice.

For me to be able to just live my dream again, actually, to be an athlete full-time. I’m very grateful the opportunity. So, obviously, there’s been some controversy around the decision, and I can understand everyone’s entitled to their opinion. Uh, but ultimately, it’s my decision. I’m going to stand by it.

Inside The Enhancement Protocol

Athletes receive their performance-enhancing substances at a hospital outside Abu Dhabi under what organizers describe as strict medical supervision. The enhancement categories include:

  • Anabolic agents: Testosterone and other steroids for muscle building
  • Peptides and growth factors: EPO and human growth hormone
  • Stimulants: Substances affecting brain and nervous system function
  • Metabolic modulators: Compounds that regulate energy production and metabolism

Doctors monitor athletes continuously through blood work, ultrasounds, sleep data, and regular health assessments. Dosages are adjusted based on individual physical responses.

Australian swimmer James Magnussen, the first publicly enhanced athlete, described his experience with the protocol.

It worked really well, maybe too well. Um, as you’ve probably seen from those images that went pretty viral. Um my body enjoyed it quite a lot.

Magnussen confirmed testosterone formed the foundation of his enhancement regimen, supplemented by rotating compounds under medical guidance.

Medical Experts Sound Alarm

Despite assurances about medical oversight, health professionals express serious concerns about unknown long-term risks. Cardiovascular problems including heart attacks and strokes rank among the most dangerous potential side effects.

Critics argue that 12 to 16 weeks of enhancement followed by five years of monitoring may prove insufficient to identify lasting health impacts—some of which are irreversible.

I think it’s been misrepresented to the athletes. I think the athletes are exposed to some substantial unknown risks um that they’re just not being made aware of. Um they’re being told that it can be uh they can use substances safely uh and the evidence isn’t there for that to be possible.

One medical expert emphasized the ethical problem: “I think it’s uh extremely irresponsible because the athletes are being told that uh their safety can be protected. Uh and even if there are tests that will happen um in several years from now, what will they do if they are showing effects on the athletes because it’s some of the effects are irreversible.”

The Enhanced Games positions itself as demonstrating that enhancements under proper supervision can be safe. However, psychiatric issues and cardiovascular complications remain documented risks of prolonged performance-enhancing drug use.

Normalizing Doping or Creating Separation?

Perhaps the most heated debate centers on whether the Enhanced Games normalizes doping in traditional sports—potentially influencing young athletes to view performance-enhancing drugs as acceptable.

Proud rejects the terminology entirely, arguing against characterizing enhancement as “doping.”

Yeah, I mean I do want to move away from that term doping like it’s it’s not, you know, to me doping is is to do with cheating and and breaking the rules, but you know, we’re just using substances that are readily available to the public.

He contends that creating a separate pathway for enhanced athletes will increase stigma around drug use in clean sports by providing an alternative venue.

Prescott echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the Enhanced Games operates under completely different rules without challenging traditional competition integrity.

We’re we have our own rules over here. We have our own setup over here. We totally respect what’s going on in terms of the Olympic Committee, the competitions. We we still respect that. Um there’s not like a massive rivalry here. We’re just doing something new.

Following The Money Trail

Co-founder Max Martin acknowledges financial motivation drives the Enhanced Games business model. Beyond hosting competitions, the organization already sells lifestyle healthcare products including supplements, testosterone replacement therapy, and longevity treatments through its website.

The business strategy uses sporting events to create awareness about performance enhancements, then provides access to those same substances commercially.

Yes, it’s about making money. We’re not a nonprofit organization. On the one hand side, we have a sporting business. In that sporting business, we host the enhanced games, but we will also be producing more and more sporting events.

Backing from venture funds connected to President Donald Trump’s family and Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel suggests significant financial interest in the model’s success.

Last year, a US judge dismissed an $800 million compensation lawsuit the Enhanced Games filed against the World Anti-Doping Agency and swimming authorities.

Olympic Leadership Responds

At this year’s Winter Olympics, officials addressed the Enhanced Games controversy directly, reaffirming their commitment to athlete safety.

The statement emphasized that safeguarding athlete health and well-being remains the Olympic movement’s top priority. While acknowledging various competitions operate under different rules globally, Olympic authorities maintain their steadfast opposition to performance-enhancing drugs.

Greek swimmer Christian Golam already claimed the Enhanced Games’ first world record last year using performance-enhancing drugs—a mark traditional federations refuse to recognize.

Athletes Defend Their Calculated Risk

Participants insist they understand potential risks but believe medical supervision mitigates danger adequately. Magnussen argued professional athletics inherently involves health risks.

I think as professional athletes, we take risks with our health uh innately by what we do. There’s nothing healthy about training at your peak of um your physical ability for 30 hours a week.

He added that ongoing monitoring provides reassurance: “I believe that were there to be long-term implications for my health, there surely would have been some short to medium-term indicators that say, ‘Hey, this isn’t tracking properly.'”

Prescott highlighted improved health awareness through constant testing, noting he now knows more about his prostate health, blood work, and overall physical condition than ever before in his athletic career.

The Message: Don’t Try This At Home

Despite embracing performance enhancement themselves, athletes and organizers repeatedly emphasize one point: this should not be replicated without medical supervision.

The message is clear. Do not try this at home. Do not do this on your own. Do not order this on the internet somewhere from where you don’t know where it’s coming from. That is everything that we can stand against.

Martin positioned the Enhanced Games as demonstrating proper protocols while discouraging unregulated enhancement obtained through black markets—substances commonly used in gym communities worldwide without oversight.

Whether this distinction resonates with young athletes watching enhanced competitors break records remains uncertain. Sports authorities fear the spectacle itself sends dangerous signals regardless of accompanying warnings.

As May approaches and Las Vegas prepares to host sport’s most controversial event, one question dominates: Will the Enhanced Games revolutionize athletics or compromise everything traditional sports stand for? The answer may determine whether this marks evolution or erosion of competitive integrity—with athlete health hanging in the balance.
