Beyond strength lies hypertrophy—pure muscle growth—followed by various forms of endurance: muscular endurance, anaerobic power, VO2 max capacity, and long-duration endurance.
Some of those cross over and some are actually a little bit contrarian to the other ones. So pushing towards one is maybe going to sacrifice something else.
This reality makes intentional program design critical—you can’t optimize everything simultaneously.

Cutting rest short might make workouts feel more “intense,” but it forces you to reduce either weight or reps, eliminating the very stimulus needed for strength gains.

The Mind-Muscle Connection Is Real
Both Huberman and Galpin emphasized the critical role of intentionality during training.

The Game-Changing Practice: Post-Workout Down-Regulation
Perhaps the most impactful recommendation was Galpin’s protocol for breathing-based recovery immediately after training.
Huberman shared his personal experience implementing this practice:
All I did was introduce a five minute down-regulation… And I noticed two things. One, I recovered more quickly workout to workout. And the other is that I used to have this dip in energy that would occur three or four hours after a hard workout.
The protocol is simple: Spend 3-5 minutes doing controlled breathing after every workout. Focus on nasal breathing with exhales twice as long as inhales, box breathing (equal duration inhale-hold-exhale-hold), or physiological sighs.

Eccentric-only training offers another powerful activation tool. For example, if you can’t feel your lats during pull-ups, step to the top position and focus exclusively on the lowering phase under control.
Eccentrics are great for strength development, very good for hypertrophy, and allow you to focus on control.
This targeted approach—which might take 6 weeks to 6 months—eventually allows full integration of that muscle into complete movement patterns.
Power Development: Strength Meets Speed
Training for power uses the same 3-to-5 framework as strength training, with one critical difference: intensity drops to 40-70% of one-rep max.
Because power equals force multiplied by velocity, you need lighter loads that allow maximal movement speed. The intent to move explosively matters more than the actual weight lifted.
This is why world records continue falling in weight-class sports like powerlifting—athletes get stronger and more powerful without adding muscle mass by mastering neural efficiency and movement quality.
Training Frequency: Strength vs. Hypertrophy
