Here’s how it works. When you concentrate massive strength volume into 4-12 weeks, three things happen in sequence:

  • Speed-strength qualities decrease—verticals drop, sprint times slow, power output falls
  • When you reduce strength volume and replace it with speed work at gradually increasing intensities, those qualities rebound higher than baseline
  • These elevated performance levels hold for weeks or months

The dip isn’t a side effect. It’s the entire point.

If your yearly squat volume totals 400 tons, you need 100 tons compressed into one month. The remaining 300 tons spread across the other 11 months.

This isn’t about adding sessions—it’s about compressing volume into a brief window. And critically, that concentration must be unidirectional.

Complex training with its multifaceted influence on the body cannot create the conditions necessary for producing highly specific physical preparedness.

If you’re concentrating on strength, technical work, speed work, and endurance work take a back seat. Trying to improve multiple qualities simultaneously prevents the concentrated stimulus from triggering LTDE.

Without proper concentration, you won’t create enough disruption. Advanced athletes won’t respond, and performance stagnates.

Rule #2: The Bigger the Dip, the Higher the Rise (Within Limits)

The appearance of the long-term delayed training effect has an independent character and to a significant degree depends on the ability of the athlete to withstand volume loads and the ability of his or her body for recovery.

This is where coaching becomes art. Three athletes at identical skill levels receiving identical training can produce three entirely different responses.

Evans lives with his best athletes specifically to monitor daily readiness. If A-skips look flat or marches appear lethargic, he adjusts immediately—cutting volume for one athlete while pushing another harder based on recovery signals.

You’re walking a tightrope. Too much volume creates maladaptation. Too little fails to trigger LTDE. Hit the sweet spot, and performance explodes.

Rule #3: Volume Triggers LTDE, Not Intensity

Concentrated loading requires high volume at moderate intensity—not maximal effort lifts. Verkhoshansky was explicit about this.

When using concentrated loads oriented to achieving the long-term delayed training effect, the methods used should not be extremely intense. Concentration in one of the single-purpose loads is already intensification of the training effect.

Think six sets of ten at 70%, not ten sets of one at 100%. Cramming 25% of annual volume into one month already imposes massive systemic stress. Adding maximal lifts pushes athletes beyond recovery thresholds.

  • Repeat wave 2-3 times

Brutal sessions—but never pushing to true 100% capacity. Athletes adapt to the volume, making their “90%” feel more like 85% after several weeks.

Intensification happens after the volume block through sharper technique, faster bar speeds, and explosive movements as volume decreases.

Rule #4: Progressive Intensification Must Follow Concentrated Loading

After eight weeks of crushing squat volume, you’re stronger—but also beaten up. Your vertical is likely depressed. The solution isn’t immediately jumping into max-effort work.

This gradual ramp unlocks LTDE. You’ve triggered the adaptation—now you must express it progressively through specific training at gradually increasing intensities.

Critically, volume must stay low during this phase. Your body is hypersensitive after concentrated loading. Even appropriate volumes will disrupt the response if introduced too early.

Verkhoshansky documented a triple jumper who violated this rule. After concentrated loading in March-April, the athlete improved slightly in May. Wanting to maintain strength, the coach added small amounts of strength volume back in.

This led to a fast decrease in speed, strength, and sports results. As a result of this, the athlete lost his chance to be selected in the qualifying competitions for a place on the national team.

Just a few percentage points of strength volume detonated the entire LTDE during the most critical competition window.

Rule #5: Loading Duration Equals Expression Window

The final rule is elegantly simple: the duration of your performance rise equals the duration of concentrated loading.

Load for eight weeks, get eight weeks of elevated performance. Load for six weeks, get six weeks. Load for twelve weeks, get twelve weeks.

Verkhoshansky found this range typically fell between 4-12 weeks for elite athletes. Shorter durations weren’t concentrated enough. Longer periods caused excessive degradation without recovery.

This makes loading duration a strategic decision based on competition schedule. One major competition might warrant twelve weeks loading and twelve weeks expression. Multiple back-to-back competitions require shorter loading cycles with sharper, more frequent peaks.
