The research team zeroed in on one brutal metric: “hitting the wall,” defined as a slowdown of 20% or more in the second half of the race compared to the first.

Faster Doesn’t Mean Smarter — Elite Men Are Six Times More Likely to Crack

Here’s where it gets truly jaw-dropping.

Most people assume elite runners have pacing dialed in. The data says otherwise — at least for men.

Among runners finishing under three hours — the most competitive tier in the entire field — male runners were 6.06 times more likely to experience catastrophic deceleration than women running at the same level.

Superior physiological conditioning does not inoculate male runners against catastrophic pacing failures.

In that sub-3-hour group, 1.42% of men hit the wall compared to just 0.23% of women. The relative risk disparity actually widens as performance improves — a paradox nobody saw coming.

At the Other End of the Field, the Situation Gets Even Uglier

Casual runners finishing beyond 4:30 hours tell a similarly grim story for men.

Nearly half of all male runners in that category — 41.62% — hit the wall. Women in the same group? Just 17.66%.

Across every single performance tier, from competitive to casual, men consistently showed greater pacing collapse than women. The gap never disappeared.

Why Women Run Smarter — Science Has Some Answers

The researchers point to a combination of physiology and behavior as the likely culprits behind male pacing failures.

On the biological side, women appear to burn fat more efficiently during endurance exercise, sparing glycogen stores and delaying the onset of the dreaded wall. A higher proportion of slow-twitch muscle fibers and hormonal influences from estradiol may also support more stable energy management over long distances.

Men, despite their advantages in VO2 max, muscle mass, and hemoglobin levels, appear to be burning through those physiological advantages by going out too hard.

The Overconfidence Factor

Beyond biology, the study points to something more uncomfortable: behavior.

The behavioral economics literature suggests men more frequently overestimate their competitive ability and accept higher risk in competitive settings. In a marathon, that could mean aggressive early splits that feel sustainable — right up until they aren’t.

The researchers were careful to flag this as a hypothesis, not a proven conclusion. Direct psychological data wasn’t collected, and they call for future studies pairing pacing records with psychometric measurements to test the theory properly.

Behavioral and strategic factors related to pacing decisions may contribute substantially to sex differences in marathon pacing.

27 Years of Data — and the Gap Has Never Closed

One of the most striking elements of the study is its timeline. Across 26 Berlin Marathon editions from 1999 to 2025, the sex disparity in pacing failure remained essentially unchanged.

Statistical trend analysis found no meaningful shift in the gap over nearly three decades. Training has evolved, sports nutrition has advanced, and marathon participation has exploded — yet the male tendency to blow up remains remarkably consistent.

This isn’t a trend. It’s a structural feature of how men and women approach the race.

What Male Runners Should Actually Do With This Information

The study’s practical takeaway is clear and direct.

Male runners — especially those chasing aggressive finish-time targets — would benefit significantly from adopting the pacing approach women naturally tend to use: conservative early splits, controlled effort through the first half, and a focus on running the second half stronger than the first.

The researchers also note that men hold genuine physiological advantages — higher VO2 max, greater hemoglobin mass, more muscle power. The cruel irony is that those same advantages may be encouraging runners to start too fast, ultimately undermining the finish they’re capable of delivering.

The Fine Print Worth Knowing

The study does come with important caveats. Researchers only analyzed finishers — runners who dropped out entirely aren’t included, which likely means the true rate of catastrophic pacing failure is even higher than these numbers suggest.

No direct physiological measures like heart rate or lactate levels were captured either, so the metabolic explanations remain educated inferences rather than confirmed mechanisms.

Still, with a dataset of 873,000 runners across 27 years, the core finding is about as robust as sports science gets.

Men go out too hard. Women don’t. And the finish line knows the difference every single time.
