Beta Glucan Powder Flushes Out Forever Chemicals and Mercury (Plus It Lowers LDL 5 to 7%). Here’s the Science Behind It

Beta-glucan powder might be one of the most overlooked tools for detoxifying harmful chemicals from our bodies, according to longevity researcher Dr. Rhonda Patrick.

In a recent livestream, Patrick explained how this natural fiber compound could help eliminate everything from mercury to “forever chemicals” while simultaneously improving gut health and lowering cholesterol.

The science behind beta-glucans reveals a surprisingly simple mechanism that addresses multiple health concerns at once.

And Patrick herself is considering adding it to her daily routine after reviewing the evidence.

The Detoxification Mechanism Behind Beta-Glucans

Beta-glucans work through a specific biological pathway that helps eliminate toxins from the body. The mechanism centers on bile acid reabsorption—or rather, the reduction of it.

When beta-glucans reduce bile acid reabsorption, the body increases fecal bile acid excretion. This essentially means toxins get pushed out through digestive waste rather than being reabsorbed into the bloodstream.

If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.

  • Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
  • Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
  • Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle

When you reduce bile acid reabsorption, this increases the fecal bile acid excretion. And so you’re increasing excretion through things through feces when you reduce your bile acid reabsorption.

This same pathway explains how beta-glucans lower LDL cholesterol—a benefit that’s been documented in multiple human studies.

Evidence for Forever Chemical Elimination

Animal studies have demonstrated that oat beta-glucans can excrete PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances)—the notorious forever chemicals that persist in the environment and human body for decades.

Patrick connected the dots between this research and methylmercury excretion, noting they follow similar elimination pathways. The implications extend to microplastics as well.

I think that methylmercury and even the forever chemicals, PFAS, are probably going to be—the excretion process will be sped up if you’re reducing your bile acid reabsorption, therefore increasing excretion through feces.

The Cholesterol-Lowering Effect

Human studies have consistently shown that beta-glucans derived from oats can lower LDL cholesterol by 5 to 7 percent. For a naturally occurring dietary compound, those numbers are impressive.

The research typically used approximately 3 grams per day of beta-glucan powder to achieve these results. That’s a significant amount—more than most people would get from food sources alone.

Gut Health and Immune System Benefits

Beyond detoxification and cholesterol management, beta-glucans function as a prebiotic fermentable fiber. They feed beneficial gut bacteria and promote overall microbiome health.

Human studies have shown that beta-glucans increase T regulatory cells—specialized immune cells crucial for preventing autoimmune diseases.

These are the cells that are very important for our immune system to recognize our own tissues, our own organs as self and not foreign. And so T regulatory cells play a very important role in preventing autoimmune diseases.

This immune-modulating effect adds another layer to beta-glucan’s health benefits.

Food Sources vs. Supplementation

Beta-glucans naturally occur in oats and mushrooms. Patrick personally eats organic overnight oats with organic chia seeds about four times weekly.

However, she acknowledged that reaching the therapeutic 3-gram daily dose through food alone proves challenging.

What About Different Oat Products?

Not all oat products provide equal benefits:

  • Steel-cut oats and whole oats: Excellent sources that avoid rapid glucose spikes
  • Instant oats: Higher glycemic index, less desirable
  • Oat milk: Beta-glucans are not present because fiber is removed during processing
  • Oat bran: Contains beta-glucans as part of the fiber content

The beta-glucans are part of the fiber. So the fiber that is in the oats is removed to make oat milk. And so they’re not going to be present in oat milk.

For people with celiac disease, oats are generally safe since they don’t contain gliadin protein—the problematic component of gluten found in wheat.

Protection Against Microplastics

Animal studies suggest that only a small percentage of ingested microplastics actually get absorbed into the bloodstream. Fiber intake—both soluble and insoluble—can further reduce absorption.

Insoluble fiber from vegetables moves material through the digestive system quickly, limiting absorption time. Soluble fiber like beta-glucans creates something more sophisticated.

When you’re eating something like the beta-glucans, it’s really creating this viscous type of material that’s lining around these epithelial cells that are lining your intestines and that viscous material is like an impenetrable barrier.

This protective barrier prevents even nanoplastics from penetrating intestinal walls.

The Contamination Crisis

Recent research revealed disturbing levels of PFAS contamination in conventionally grown produce. Strawberries, peaches, plums, and grapes—fruits commonly consumed by children—tested positive for forever chemicals.

The contamination isn’t surface-level. Rinsing doesn’t remove these chemicals because they’re absorbed into the fruit itself.

Even organic produce sometimes becomes contaminated when farms are located near conventional operations. Many families can’t afford organic options or lack awareness about contamination data.

It’s just really upsetting that we live in this great country that isn’t protecting its people more from these compounds.

Patrick suggested beta-glucan supplementation might be particularly valuable for children regularly consuming conventional produce.

How to Use Beta-Glucan Powder

Beta-glucan powder functions similarly to other fiber supplements like psyllium husk. Many people take fiber supplements, particularly when traveling or when dietary fiber intake is inadequate.

Patrick mentioned her husband supplements with fiber during travel and indicated she plans to swap psyllium husk for beta-glucan powder in her household.

When selecting a product, look for third-party testing verification. Many testing organizations evaluate prebiotic fiber supplements for quality and purity.

The Dosage Question

Research showing LDL reduction used approximately 3 grams daily of beta-glucan powder. That amount also appears relevant for detoxification benefits based on animal studies.

Patrick acknowledged she doesn’t currently reach that threshold through food alone, despite eating oats four times weekly.

Three grams a day of beta-glucans is a lot and so I’m not getting that dose even though it’s still beneficial. So I’m thinking I might do some beta-glucan powder.

The Triple Benefit

Beta-glucan supplementation offers three distinct advantages that work synergistically:

  1. Enhanced detoxification of methylmercury, PFAS, and potentially microplastics
  2. Improved gut microbiome and increased T regulatory cells for immune function
  3. Lower LDL cholesterol by 5-7 percent through natural means

The beta-glucan powder may be a powerful tool that we have for increasing the detoxification of some of these pretty nasty chemicals and toxins that we’re exposed to including methylmercury and the forever chemicals. And as a side effect, you’re going to have improved gut microbiome, you’re going to have improved T regulatory cells, and also lower LDL. So it sounds like a win-win-win.

Given the unavoidable daily exposure to environmental toxins—from food, water, and consumer products—supporting the body’s natural elimination pathways makes practical sense.

Beta-glucans represent an accessible intervention backed by both mechanistic understanding and research evidence. Whether through whole food sources or concentrated powder form, this soluble fiber deserves consideration for anyone concerned about toxic burden and long-term health.
