One of the most gifted distance runners the Western Hemisphere has ever seen has been found alive — and the story behind his disappearance is as heartbreaking as it is complex.

Daniel do Nascimento, Brazil’s record-breaking marathon phenomenon, vanished without a trace on June 19 after walking out of his family’s home carrying nothing but a black backpack.

For 44 days, his family, Brazil’s athletics federation, and the country’s entire running community feared the worst.

Then, on a quiet street in eastern São Paulo, a stranger recognized a face from the record books — and everything changed.

Found on a City Street After 44 Days

Do Nascimento, 28, was discovered walking along Rua Dr. Ubaldino do Amaral in the Belenzinho neighborhood of São Paulo on Saturday.

A passerby recognized him and immediately alerted the Metropolitan Civil Guard, the city’s municipal police force. Officers confirmed his identity and, crucially, reported that he appeared to be in good physical condition.

If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.

  • Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
  • Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle

He was escorted to a police station in the Tatuapé district, where his family rushed to be reunited with him. Brazilian outlet g1, which first broke the news, confirmed the details of how he was found.

No official explanation has been released about where do Nascimento had been during those 44 days — or why he left in the first place.

A Career That Shook the Running World

To understand just how significant this story is, you have to understand what do Nascimento once was — and what he stood to become.

In April 2022, he clocked a breathtaking 2:04:51 at the Seoul Marathon, a time that still stands as the South American and Brazilian record. No runner from the Americas had ever gone faster.

The year before, at the Tokyo Olympic marathon held in Sapporo, he ran near the very front of the pack. In one of sport’s most memorable moments, he exchanged a fist bump with the greatest marathoner in history, Eliud Kipchoge, before eventually dropping out of the race.

Then came New York City in November 2022 — a performance that left the running world speechless for all the wrong reasons.

Do Nascimento led the NYC Marathon alone for more than 20 miles, tearing through 10K in 28:42 and reaching halfway in 1:01:22 in unusually brutal heat. With just five miles remaining, he collapsed on the course. The finish line he deserved never came.

The Doping Ban That Ended Everything

In July 2024, the Athletics Integrity Unit delivered a devastating verdict: do Nascimento was handed a five-year doping ban.

Two samples taken during training in Rio de Janeiro in July 2023 had tested positive for the anabolic steroids metenolone and drostanolone. A third banned substance, nandrolone, was also detected in one of the samples.

The ban effectively erases any hope of competing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. His suspension runs until July 2029.

What makes the story even more troubling is how difficult officials found it to even communicate with him throughout the entire process. His manager sought repeated deadline extensions in mid-2024, citing do Nascimento’s mental health struggles, and submitted a medical document the unit described as largely illegible.

By September 2024, the manager admitted he was unreachable. Anti-doping officials were eventually forced to contact him through his wife via WhatsApp that November. By February 2025 — after months without a meaningful response — the unit moved forward with formal charges.

“He Really Missed the Routine of an Athlete”

His mother, Valdirene Ferreira, has painted a quietly devastating picture of life after the ban.

She told g1 that her son had been living under her care, accompanying her every day to her job at a cassava-processing plant. The man who once led the New York City Marathon had quietly rebuilt his days around his mother’s work schedule.

But running never left him.

He would do some training sessions secretly in the middle of the sugarcane field. I think he really missed the routine of an athlete.

That image — a world-record holder sneaking out to train alone in sugarcane fields — speaks volumes about the psychological toll a career’s sudden end can take on an elite athlete.

Do Nascimento was last seen leaving the family home in Paraguaçu Paulista, a town in the interior of São Paulo state, on June 19. His family didn’t formally report him missing until July 27, more than a month later. Brazil’s athletics federation subsequently reached out to the nation’s running community, appealing for any information on his whereabouts.

What Comes Next for Brazil’s Fastest

For now, the answers remain scarce.

Authorities have not disclosed what do Nascimento did or where he stayed during those 44 missing days. His family has been reunited with him, and physically, he appears to have come through the ordeal intact.

Whether he will ever compete again is another question entirely. His ban doesn’t expire until July 2029, meaning he would be 33 years old before he could legally return to the sport that defined him.

What this story ultimately reveals is the quiet, largely invisible crisis that can follow an elite athlete when the world stops watching — and the immense human cost of a career that ends not on a podium, but in a courtroom document.

Daniel do Nascimento is alive. That, for now, is what matters most.
