Gary Biser once weighed approximately 500 pounds and felt trapped in a body he no longer recognized.
As a corporate executive chef from Saint Petersburg, Florida, he’d spent years using food as an emotional escape—first to cope with his parents’ difficult divorce, later to numb deeper struggles with self-worth.
When his doctor delivered a blunt warning that he might not live much longer, everything changed.
In a recent article for Men’s Health, Gary shared how he lost an astonishing 315 pounds in three years—and finally learned to love himself again.

Food Became His Safe Place Early On
Gary’s weight struggles began in childhood during his parents’ painful divorce. Without the emotional tools to process what was happening around him, he turned to food for comfort.
The kitchen table was the one calming place in the house. It was the only spot where there was no fighting, arguing, or name-calling. That kitchen table—and the food on top of it—became my safe place.
On the outside, Gary seemed happy and confident. He joked around and put on a good face for everyone.
If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.
- Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
- Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
- Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle
But internally, he was struggling deeply. He hated what he saw in the mirror and felt disgusted with who he’d become.
His Weight Spiraled to Nearly 500 Pounds
By age 35 in 2021, Gary’s weight had reached approximately 500 pounds. He was married with children, but the shame he felt was overwhelming.
As a father, I want to be someone who is strong and present. Someone my boys look up to as a role model. How could I do that when I couldn’t even say no to a cheeseburger?
The embarrassment wasn’t just personal—it affected how he showed up for his family. That realization cut deep.
A Terrifying Doctor’s Visit Changed Everything
Gary’s body was breaking down rapidly. His feet and back constantly ached, he felt exhausted no matter how much he slept, and he was losing bladder control.
When he finally saw a doctor, he received a prediabetes diagnosis—which explained some of his symptoms. But what came next was even more alarming.
A sleep study revealed Gary stopped breathing 118 times per hour during sleep. His doctor told him he was essentially dying every night he went to bed.

He said to go home and hug and kiss my kids more than usual, because that could be the last night I ever would.
That moment shattered any remaining denial. Gary thought about his children and knew he had to survive for them.
He Underwent Bariatric Surgery—But Surgery Wasn’t the Fix
Gary’s doctor recommended a duodenal switch, a minimally invasive bariatric procedure combining a sleeve with an intestinal bypass.
Before surgery, he followed a strict two-week preoperative diet starting November 30, 2022. He quit his unhealthy eating habits cold turkey.
On December 14, 2022, he had surgery. At first, Gary assumed the operation alone would solve everything.
He quickly realized he was wrong. His mindset was the real problem, not just his stomach size.
He Adopted a Simple Low-Carb, High-Protein Diet
After surgery, Gary started with pureed food as instructed by doctors. He then transitioned to a low-carb, high-protein diet and began measuring every portion meticulously.

Even though he’d previously been able to consume $30 worth of fast food in one sitting, he resisted those urges completely.
I’ve still not had one morsel of refined sugar or carbonated food and drink. My motto now is, ‘No cheeseburger tastes as good as I look and feel!’
Three years later, Gary has maintained that discipline without exception.
The Emotional Challenge Was Harder Than Physical Hunger
As a corporate chef, food is Gary’s livelihood. Cooking for his family creates memories—but early on, it also created torture.
Right after surgery, he’d prepare pizza and other indulgent meals for his family while he could only eat pureed protein.
I used to sit in my car outside while they ate delicious food like pizza and cried. In the beginning, I wanted to indulge so badly.
But he’s grateful he pushed through. That early suffering built the discipline that carried him forward.
He Started Waking Up at 3 A.M. for the Gym
Gary set his alarm for 3 A.M. every morning and drove to the gym. At first, he’d sleep longer in his car—then drive home without ever going inside.

- Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses

Eventually, he felt ready to walk through those gym doors. He started slow with treadmill walks, then gradually added weight training.
Now, Gary trains six days a week for 90 minutes starting at 4 A.M. His routine includes:
- Five-minute treadmill warm-up
- Chest and triceps
- Back and biceps
- Legs
- Shoulders and abs
- Weekly rotation between upper and lower body pump days
He built muscle while losing fat, which helped him avoid excessive loose skin and kept his energy levels high.
He Lost 315 Pounds—And Found Self-Respect
Gary’s weight came off relatively quickly because he stayed active and committed to his plan. In total, he lost 315 pounds.
His health transformed completely. Sleep improved dramatically, prediabetes resolved, and his relationship with his wife deepened.
But the most profound change wasn’t physical at all.

My biggest change isn’t physical at all. It’s the way I view myself now. I not only recognize the man in the mirror, I respect him. I love him!
Gary discovered something powerful: his battle was never really with his body. It was always with his mind.
Discipline Became His Freedom
Gary’s transformation taught him that he’s capable of anything he commits his mind to—and he believes everyone else is too.
Once we train our minds, our body will follow, and discipline becomes our freedom. All of the bad habits, cravings, and excuses I’d always had became powerless over me once my mindset changed.
He acknowledges that change is scary and uncomfortable. Making excuses is easier than doing hard things—he knows because he lived that way for years.
But on the other side of fear, he found a version of himself he’d never met before: confident, strong, and capable beyond what he ever imagined.
His Advice for Anyone Struggling With Weight
Gary’s message is simple but powerful: you are capable of more than you believe.
Change requires facing discomfort head-on. It means showing up even when motivation fades.

But waiting on the other side is a version of yourself who is stronger, healthier, and worthy of your own respect.
For Gary, that journey started with one doctor’s visit—and ended with him finally loving the man staring back at him in the mirror.
