However, studies indicate that jumping into cold water immediately after strength training can blunt hypertrophy (muscle growth). This suggests that while cold therapy may reduce inflammation and muscle soreness, it could also interfere with muscle adaptation.
The question remains: how long should you wait after exercise before cold plunging? Current data isn’t clear on the exact timing, but there is strong evidence that plunging immediately after a workout reduces muscle-building potential. If the goal is hypertrophy, spacing out cold exposure from training may be necessary.
Oxidative Stress: Finding the Right Balance

While cold exposure has been linked to reduced inflammation and improved mood, there is no strong evidence that it extends lifespan. In a comprehensive review of the literature in 2019 and again in 2023, researchers found no convincing data supporting cold therapy’s role in longevity.
In contrast, heat exposure (such as sauna use) has shown a more probable lifespan benefit. This means that while cold plunges might help short-term recovery and mental resilience, they likely aren’t a key strategy for living longer.
Cold Plunges vs. Exercise: Where to Invest Your Time?
For those with limited time for health and wellness, prioritizing exercise over passive recovery methods like cold plunging may be the more effective choice. While cold therapy has its place, relying on it as a shortcut to fitness and longevity may not yield the desired results.
