A veteran trail runner who vanished on one of the world’s most iconic mountains is at the center of a desperate search that has gripped the international ultrarunning community.

Kalie McCrystal, a 38-year-old elite Canadian trail runner and mountaineer, disappeared on September 1 while training on the Matterhorn — and rescue teams have now suspended their search.

Those who know her best are refusing to give up hope.

Here’s everything we know about what happened, who McCrystal is, and why this story is so much more complicated than it might first appear.

A Daring Record Attempt That Ended in Silence

McCrystal had traveled to the Italian resort town of Cervinia in early August with a bold mission in mind: to break the fastest known time on the Matterhorn’s Lion’s Ridge route.

Her target was a sub-five-hour round trip — climbing and descending via a ridge that straddles Italy’s South Face and Switzerland’s West Face. The record she was chasing had been set just weeks earlier, on August 9, by American runner and climber Kraina Andersen.

If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.

  • Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
  • Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle

She wasn’t rushing in blind. McCrystal had summited the Matterhorn multiple times over the summer, posting to social media as recently as August 7. She was treating every ascent as preparation — studying conditions, speaking to local guides, and mapping the route with the precision of a seasoned alpine athlete.

Then, on September 1, she set out — and never came back.

“She Was in Her Element” — Friends Push Back on Any Suggestion of Recklessness

In the days following her disappearance, voices from within the elite mountain running world were quick to defend McCrystal’s judgment and capability.

Hilary Gerardi, an American skyrunner and mountaineer based in Chamonix, France, has known McCrystal since 2023 and traveled to Cervinia over the weekend to help coordinate search efforts.

She knew what she was doing. This isn’t one of these stories of a trail runner getting in over their head. She summited the mountain many times, but she also spent time over there not necessarily summiting, but just going up there and checking the route.

Gerardi also spoke with an Italian mountain guide who had encountered McCrystal on the mountain the Tuesday before the search was suspended. His account painted a picture of someone operating at the top of her game.

He told me that she was moving super well, competently, skillfully and that she was calm, relaxed. He said that he did not feel at all that she was being reckless, that she was in her element. He wasn’t worried about her at all.

That detail — that an experienced mountain guide had zero concerns — makes the silence that followed all the more unsettling.

A Record-Setter With Serious Credentials

McCrystal isn’t just a hobby runner chasing bucket-list summits. She is one of the most accomplished skyrunners in the international circuit — and her résumé makes that impossible to dispute.

Just weeks before her disappearance, she had claimed an FKT of her own. On August 14, she completed a round trip on the Matterhorn’s Hörnli Ridge route from Zermatt in 6 hours, 47 minutes, and 33 seconds — and characteristically downplayed the achievement.

I intended this to be a recon run, but it ended up faster than I thought.

That modest framing says a lot about her approach to the mountains.

Her 2026 race season alone told a compelling story. Notable highlights include:

  • Victory at Argentina’s Cuatro Refugios on February 22 — a grueling 24.8-mile race featuring over 10,800 feet of vertical gain and loss
  • Fifth place at the Beast of Big Creek 22K skyrace in Washington on August 1
  • Fourth place at the legendary Trofeo Kima — a 52K race in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, with more than 13,000 feet of elevation gain

Back in 2022, she won the Whistler Alpine Meadows 50K in a course-record 5 hours, 59 minutes, and 32 seconds.

A Life Lived Across Disciplines

What makes McCrystal’s story especially striking is the world she comes from outside of running.

Based in Squamish, British Columbia — one of Canada’s most celebrated outdoor adventure hubs — she works as a practicing lawyer and teaches at Capilano University. The mountains aren’t an escape from her life. They are woven directly into it.

She had shared her Matterhorn FKT ambitions openly on social media in early August, describing the sub-five-hour goal as her defining athletic objective for the season. For someone juggling a legal career, an academic role, and an elite racing schedule, the level of preparation she brought to this attempt speaks volumes.

The Search Suspended — But Hope Remains

Rescue teams operating in Italy’s Aosta Valley have officially suspended their search. It’s a devastating development — but not necessarily a final one.

McCrystal’s family released a statement indicating their belief, based on currently available information, that she likely fell while descending the Matterhorn. Italian authorities have not publicly confirmed her death.

The case remains open. Those close to her have not given up, and the mountain has not yet given any answers.

For the skyrunning and mountaineering communities watching from around the world, McCrystal’s disappearance is a sobering reminder of how quickly the mountains can change — even for athletes who do everything right.
