โ€œThis technology could give you the genetic capabilities of elite athletes with the flick of a switch โ€” and we just crush the switch so it stays on forever,โ€ he explains.

Israetel predicts: โ€œWeโ€™ll get hit with biologics by 2028, small molecule drugs by 2029 that make those biologics obsolete, and gene editing by 2030. Like vinyl records to Spotify โ€” every next wave lasts shorter and works better.โ€

Who still goes to the gym?

Hardcore lifters, aesthetic sculptors, power athletes, and sport-specific trainees wonโ€™t drop the barbell immediately.

Specialized training will remain relevant for targeting specific muscles or skills. For example, if you want bigger arms but not a thicker chest or jawline, lifting will still offer nuanced control.

Skills-based sports like Brazilian jiu-jitsu, rock climbing, boxing, and Olympic lifting will also continue. These activities require technique and motor learning โ€” not just conditioning.

And for those who just love the gym? Lifting won’t disappear โ€” itโ€™ll become more personalized, elite, and possibly even more competitive.

The decline of big-box gyms

However, general use gyms like Planet Fitness or 24-Hour Fitness may not fare so well.

โ€œMost of those clients are there to check off a fitness box. If a pill can do that, theyโ€™ll never set foot back in that building again,โ€ says Israetel.

As usage declines, many commercial gyms could go out of business between 2030 and 2040.

Personal trainers will need to pivot

The same goes for fitness coaches focused solely on general population fat loss, muscle gain, or basic health outcomes.

When those results become medically accessible, the services that revolve around delivering them lose their demand.

Israetel cautions future generations: โ€œStarting a career in generic personal training might be like becoming a typewriter repairman in 1988. The industry is going digital โ€” you need to evolve with it.โ€

Coaching in other ways will expand

The good news? Coaching isnโ€™t dead โ€” itโ€™ll just evolve.

  • Psychology-focused coaching (habit change, stress management)
  • Skill coaching (martial arts, dance, climbing, endurance sports)
  • Community building and personal connection facilitation

And as more people hit their physical potential with minimal effort, they’ll have energy and time for richer social, intellectual, and altruistic pursuits.

Caveats: Why none of this is guaranteed

Israetel lists a few reasons this timeline could shift:

  • Government regulation: A single adverse event could stall gene therapy for years.
  • Cultural resistance: Widespread rejection of genetic modification on ethical grounds.
  • Economic delay: High cost may prohibit access until treatments scale and prices fall.

Still, market forces, technological progress, and human desire point to one clear trend: fitness, as an industry and concept, is about to change.
