Most women don’t want to lose weight just to hit a number on the scale.
They want to feel confident, attractive, and comfortable in their own body again.
What’s frustrating is that for so many women, even eating clean and working out doesn’t deliver the results they desire.
Functional nutritionist and Primal Bod founder Candy Frasier has helped thousands of women finally see their bodies respond without starving themselves or living in the gym, and the reason her approach works is something that almost no one in the wellness community is talking about.

The Unexpected Discovery That Changed Everything
Candy’s transformation wasn’t about vanity. It started as a mission to save her husband Tom, a type 1 diabetic, from dangerous blood sugar crashes.
I was working out like a freaking crazy person. Peloton, P90, you name it. Weightlifting, nothing was making me like the way I looked in the mirror.
Despite years as a board-certified nutritionist, Candy had given up on her own body. She was doing everything “right”—eating organic paleo foods, exercising intensely—yet she was skinny fat with stubborn cellulite.
Then came the turning point. When she adjusted her diet to match Tom’s needs for blood sugar stability, something remarkable happened.
I dropped 13 lbs in 6 weeks.
After years of trying everything without success, she finally cracked the code—and it had nothing to do with calories or cardio.
The Insulin Secret Nobody Talks About
The lightbulb moment came from an unlikely source: her diabetic husband’s daily struggles with insulin management.
I told you the more insulin I take, the fatter I get. Insulin is the master fat-storing hormone.
Candy realized she’d been taught this in nutrition school, but never truly understood it. Her fasting glucose was always perfect at 80, so she assumed she didn’t have a blood sugar problem.
The reality was shocking. Her body was massively overproducing insulin to keep that number stable, and all that insulin was preventing fat loss.
Most women experience this for years with zero symptoms. Then suddenly, they’re diagnosed with insulin resistance seemingly overnight.
Warning Signs You’re Producing Too Much Insulin
According to Candy, certain symptoms reveal insulin issues long before they show up on lab work:
- Hypoglycemia – Getting “hangry” when skipping meals
- Excess body fat despite eating healthy
- Sugar cravings throughout the day
- Skin tags
- Cystic acne, especially around the mouth and jawline
- Facial hair growth
- PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)
PCOS is diabetes of the ovaries.
The ovaries have some of the highest concentrations of insulin receptors in the body. When insulin levels stay chronically elevated, those receptors become resistant—leading to cyst formation.
The Paleo Trap That’s Keeping You Fat
Candy spent years as a practicing nutritionist recommending organic paleo diets. People felt better initially, but nobody lost significant weight.
The problem? Hidden sugars in “healthy” foods.
I would make him a smoothie. It would have Greek yogurt, some berries, you know, maybe a little swirl of honey on the top and a protein powder. And he would drink that and his blood sugar would do the same thing as if he had a regular milkshake from Culver’s Drive-In.
An apple with peanut butter? That’s a Snickers bar to your blood sugar.
Those date and nut paleo desserts? Same insulin spike as eating candy.
The Flax and Chia Seed Problem
Even more concerning are the “superfoods” that might be sabotaging hormones.
Flax and chia seeds are loaded with phytoestrogens—plant compounds that can disrupt natural hormone balance. During Candy’s vegan years, she consumed them religiously and experienced:
- Severe cystic acne
- Painful, engorged breasts
- Weight gain and cellulite
- Constant water retention
- Two periods per month
I removed flax and chia from my diet and literally within a week my face cleared up. My breasts stopped hurting. I wasn’t bloated anymore. I had no more water retention.
This pattern repeated with countless clients, especially young women whose hormones were being thrown off by these supposedly beneficial seeds.
What Meat Actually Does to Your Body
Contrary to popular belief, eating more protein—specifically meat—doesn’t make you fat.
Recent research shows you can consume significant amounts of protein without gaining weight. The body will build muscle and utilize the excess, rather than storing it as fat.
I can go a whole month and feast and eat 200 to 300 grams of protein every single day and I don’t gain any weight.
The real issue? Most women drastically undereat protein and don’t realize how much muscle they could build with adequate intake.
A Typical Day of Eating
Candy’s daily nutrition focuses almost exclusively on animal foods:
- Bison, beef, or elk as the foundation
- Sardines (her secret weapon for fat burning)
- Wild-caught fish like salmon and cod
- Fermented vegetables as condiments
- Occasional berries when in season
- Minimal vegetables, treated like garnish
Grass-fed and wild game are ideal, but conventionally raised meat still beats any bowl of cereal or pasta.
The Sardine Fast That Skyrockets Ketones
One of Candy’s most powerful protocols involves eating only sardines for three days.
Participants start with five to six cans daily, tapering down as appetite naturally decreases. The omega-3 fatty acids in sardines actively increase ketone production, accelerating fat burning.
Sardines also provide exceptional nutrient density—calcium from the bones, folate, and critical minerals—while eliminating cravings and creating a sense of calm.
The Fasting Protocol That Reverses Aging
Candy does a 48-hour fast every single week. At the 48-hour mark, human growth hormone peaks in women.
Human growth hormone is the hormone for young people. It is the kid hormone. So, it is why we age because we don’t fast.
This isn’t just about weight loss. Elevated HGH promotes:
- Youthful skin and facial structure
- Muscle preservation and growth
- Cellular regeneration through autophagy
- Tightening of loose or sagging skin
Women in Candy’s program who have significant weight to lose often avoid the need for skin removal surgery entirely, thanks to fasting-induced autophagy.
The Critical Balance: Feast and Fast
Fasting without adequate refueling backfires. Candy can easily consume 200-300 grams of protein on eating days because she fasts regularly.
For women still menstruating, timing matters. Never fast close to ovulation or during your period. The body interprets fasting as famine and may delay or suppress ovulation.
The Keto Mistake Almost Everyone Makes
Most people who attempt keto never actually achieve ketosis.
Everybody that has joined my program has done the keto diet and never been in ketosis.
Without blood ketone tracking, you’re guessing. Traditional high-fat keto (80% fat, 20% protein) creates another problem: fat can make you fat.
When you’re trying to lose body fat, you want to burn your own fat reserves—not dietary fat from someone else’s animal.
Modern grain-fed beef contains far more fat than the wild game our ancestors ate. That fluffy white ribeye fat? It’s higher in omega-6 fatty acids, lower in omega-3s, and easier to overeat than the leaner, tougher fat on grass-fed animals.
Finding Your Goldilocks Zone
The sweet spot for nutritional ketosis typically falls between 1.5 to 2.5 mmol/L on a blood ketone meter.
But individual variation matters enormously. Some women lose 30 pounds in three months with lower ketone readings. Others need different ranges depending on:
- Metabolic rate
- Menopause status
- Height and body composition
- Exercise intensity and frequency
Tracking reveals your personal threshold—the exact amount of protein that keeps you burning fat without slowing metabolism or sacrificing muscle.
The Microbiome Connection to Obesity
Bad gut bacteria don’t just make you crave sugar. They can actually cause your body to overproduce insulin, creating a vicious cycle of hunger and fat storage.
Research on visceral fat revealed that people with healthier microbiomes carry significantly less dangerous organ fat. In one striking study, sterile mice received fecal transplants from either lean or obese humans, then ate identical diets.
The result? The mouse receiving microbes from an obese person became fat.
Fermented foods provide the solution. Candy recommends eating small amounts from multiple sources—sauerkraut, kimchi, fermented vegetables, kefir—to build microbial diversity.
The goal is to get a variety. Get like seven of your neighbors to make their ferments as long as they have good microbes.
Just two tablespoons total per meal provides enough beneficial bacteria. The microbes are microscopic—you don’t need massive quantities.
Movement That Actually Burns Visceral Fat
Candy walks seven miles daily—split between morning and evening. But it’s not just about steps.
Visceral fat (the dangerous fat around organs) responds specifically to struggle. That means:
- Sprinting like you’re running from a mountain lion
- Lifting weights to complete failure
- High-intensity interval training
- Any activity involving a dominance fight response
After meals, even 10 minutes of walking or 40 squats increases circulation and insulin sensitivity, preventing blood sugar spikes and excess insulin production.
The Coffee Problem Nobody Wants to Hear
Coffee triggers cortisol release, which dumps stored glycogen (glucose) into your bloodstream. This elevates blood sugar and keeps you in sugar-burning mode all day.
Beyond metabolic effects, coffee severely dehydrates skin, accelerating wrinkle formation.
This is why we see such awesome before and afters in my program with the girls with their skin. I mean, they 10 years goes off their face.
The Nose Job Effect
One of the most unexpected transformations happens in women’s faces.
Research on visceral fat reveals that inflammation causes facial features to expand—including the nose. When women eliminate visceral fat through Candy’s program, their true facial structure emerges.
Fat leaves the face in unwanted places while preserving the superficial subcutaneous fat that keeps skin plump and youthful.
Debunking Common Meat Myths
The Cholesterol Lie
New research reveals that low cholesterol links to higher all-cause mortality, while high cholesterol connects to… nothing.
Cholesterol serves as the body’s natural healing compound and the building block for all hormones. When entering ketosis, cholesterol temporarily rises because it’s stored inside fat cells. As those cells release fat for fuel, cholesterol comes with it.
The body then utilizes that cholesterol normally. The spike is temporary and harmless.
The Constipation Myth
Many people struggle with digestion when increasing meat intake, but the solution isn’t fiber—it’s microbes.
Fermented foods stimulate peristalsis (gut movement) by improving gut bacteria. Magnesium, potassium, and vitamin C support drainage pathways. Red light therapy in the morning energizes mitochondria in the gut, creating the cellular energy needed for normal bowel function.
One Change to Make Today
If Candy could encourage every woman to make a single change, it would be simple:
Eat more meat.
Choose meat over processed carbs every single time. Feed it to your children. Support regenerative farms raising animals properly.
If you’re hungry for the ice cream, go eat a steak. If you are hungry for chocolate covered nuts, eat beef jerky. Always pick meat first.
Cravings diminish. Insulin drops. Fat storage decreases. The body finally starts responding the way it should.
Understanding insulin changes everything—not just for weight loss, but for hormonal health, fertility, skin quality, and aging. Once you learn it, you’ll never have to learn it again.
