Jake Gyllenhaal is officially stepping back into the boots of Dalton for Road House 2, the sequel to Amazon MGM Studios’ wildly successful 2024 reboot. But while fans may be excited to see his return, the Oscar nominee isn’t exactly looking forward to the physical transformation required for the role.
In a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the 44-year-old actor admitted that the thought of getting back into fight-ready shape for the sequel is nothing short of daunting.
“It’s terrifying… It’s terrifying,” Gyllenhaal told Colbert, echoing the anxiety many actors face when preparing for body-focused roles. His tone, though, wasn’t all doom and dread. The actor remained lighthearted and self-aware throughout the conversation, especially when Colbert offered a wildly creative solution to avoid such extreme workouts altogether.

A ‘Green-Eyed’ Alternative to UFC Abs
During the interview, Colbert revealed that he once auditioned for the original 1989 Road House, famously led by Patrick Swayze. While he conceded that he couldn’t achieve the same kind of shredded look Gyllenhaal sported in the reboot, he pitched a role he could actually pull off in the sequel.
“What if I’m the accountant for the roadhouse?” Colbert said, miming a fight sequence with receipt spikes. “I use those like, ‘Kah! Kah! Kah!’ Little eyeshades, something like that… They call me Green Eye, the green-eyed monster.”
The bit had Gyllenhaal cracking up, clearly amused by the improvisation. While there’s no word on whether Colbert’s “Green Eye” will make the final cut, the moment offered fans a glimpse into the fun dynamic between the two and the less glamorous reality behind those on-screen muscles.
The Pain Behind the Physique
For Gyllenhaal, getting in shape for Road House in 2024 wasn’t just about looking the part — it was about staying healthy and injury-free while portraying an ex-UFC fighter.
Speaking to People last year, the Nightcrawler actor described the process as an all-hands-on-deck effort.
“I knew that I needed help with nutrition, I needed to keep myself safe from injury, and I also needed to have the aesthetics of the whole role,” he explained. “So balancing all that took a group of people helping me all the time.”
The transformation took months of tailored strength training, a precise meal plan, and constant recovery work. This wasn’t Gyllenhaal’s first rodeo either — he underwent a similarly intense process for 2015’s Southpaw, where he portrayed a professional boxer.
Still, jumping back into that level of physical intensity years later — at 44 — is understandably intimidating.
A Sequel Fueled by Streaming Success
Gyllenhaal’s nerves may be well-founded, but the motivation is clearly there. The Road House reboot shattered expectations when it debuted on Amazon Prime Video in March 2024.
According to Amazon MGM Studios, the film became the most-watched original movie debut in the company’s history, attracting over 50 million viewers globally within its first two weekends. That number has now climbed to an estimated 80 million worldwide.
Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, confirmed the sequel at the company’s first upfront presentation in 2024, citing the film’s overwhelming popularity. “The world went crazy for a little movie called ‘Road House,’” Salke said, highlighting its global reach.
While Amazon has not shared precise metrics on what constitutes a “view,” the impact is clear: viewers showed up in droves, and a sequel was inevitable.
From Broadway to Backflips: What’s Next for Gyllenhaal
Aside from hitting the gym, Gyllenhaal is keeping busy with several high-profile projects. He’s currently starring in a Broadway revival of Othello alongside Denzel Washington, a production running through June 8, 2025, at the Barrymore Theatre.
He’s also set to appear in The Bride, directed by his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, and in In the Grey, a new project from filmmaker Guy Ritchie. Multiple other roles are reportedly in pre-production, making 2025 a full-throttle year for the actor.
Despite his packed schedule, Road House 2 remains top of mind — not just because of the physical demands, but because of the legacy Gyllenhaal feels responsible for.
A Tribute to Swayze
When the first Road House reboot launched, Gyllenhaal paid tribute to the late Patrick Swayze, who originated the role of Dalton in 1989. The two had worked together on 2001’s Donnie Darko, and Gyllenhaal has often spoken about Swayze’s kindness and generosity during that time.
“He was such a talent, and I continue to have so much respect and admiration for what he put out and into the world,” Gyllenhaal wrote on Instagram in March 2024. “I’ll never forget his kindness to me when I was starting out… We’ve made a different ‘RH’ this time around, but hoping it’s one he would’ve had fun watching!”
No Release Date Yet — But “Jacked Gyllenhaal” Is Coming Back
Amazon hasn’t announced when Road House 2 will be released or started filming, but if Gyllenhaal is already bracing for training, production could begin sometime later this year.
Until then, fans can stream the 2024 Road House on Amazon Prime or catch Gyllenhaal live on stage in Othello. One thing’s for sure: whether he’s in a tux, tights, or tank top, Jake Gyllenhaal will be everywhere in 2025.
