London Marathon Goes Two Days in 2027 With Over 100,000 Runners Across Both Saturdays

One of the world’s most iconic foot races is about to make history — and not just by a few seconds.

The London Marathon has officially confirmed it will expand to a two-day event in 2027, a move its organizers are calling a once-in-a-generation transformation of what a marathon can actually be.

More than 100,000 runners are expected to take to the streets of the British capital across Saturday, April 24th and Sunday, April 25th — making it the largest version of the event in its 44-year history.

And the way organizers have structured the split between the men’s and women’s races has already sparked serious conversation among the running community.

A “Once-in-a-Generation” Reimagining

London Marathon Events CEO Hugh Brasher didn’t hold back when describing what this expansion means for the sport.

Our most ambitious evolution to date — a once-in-a-generation reimagining of what a marathon and city-wide celebration of activity can be.

The full 26.2-mile course will be run on both days, with each day hosting its own mass participation event alongside elite competition.

FULL-BODY TRAINING

If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.

  • Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
  • Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
  • Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle

Ballot results for 2027 spots will be announced this July, and participants will only be permitted to race on one of the two days — not both.

The Smartest Part of the Plan? Splitting the Elite Fields by Sex

Here’s where it gets genuinely interesting. Rather than designating one day as the “main” event and the other as secondary, organizers have made a bold structural choice — elite women and wheelchair racers will compete on one day, elite men on the other.

Championship and Good For Age runners will also be divided along the same lines, meaning women in those competitive waves will race alongside the elite women’s field for the very first time.

It’s a shift that immediately caught the attention of runners and fans online, with many arguing it actually solves a problem the London Marathon has quietly carried for years.

Previously, women who qualified through championship standards weren’t placed on the elite start — meaning some of Britain’s fastest female runners went largely unrecognized while influencers and celebrities took the spotlight. That changes in 2027.

Both Days Will Feel Like the Real Thing

The concern with any multi-day expansion is obvious — one day becomes the marquee event, and the other feels like a consolation prize.

By anchoring elite competition to each day separately, organizers appear to have headed that criticism off entirely. Each morning will have its own high-stakes racing, its own world-class athletes, and its own shot at history.

There’s a practical bonus, too. Under current rules, elite women must start 30 minutes before men to prevent them from being paced by male runners. A fully separate women’s race day eliminates that awkward workaround completely.

Why Now? The Demand Has Become Impossible to Ignore

The numbers behind this decision are staggering. In 2026, a record-breaking 1.33 million people entered the ballot for a London Marathon place — a 36% jump from 2025 and nearly double the 578,304 who entered in 2024.

The event, first staged in 1981, is now one of seven World Marathon Majors alongside Tokyo, Boston, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago, and New York. Its rise in global popularity has created a demand problem that simply can’t be solved by adding a few hundred extra bibs.

A second full race day is, at this point, the only logical answer.

Record-Breaking Performances Set the Stage

The timing of this expansion couldn’t come on the back of a more dramatic year of racing. The 2026 London Marathon delivered moments that will be talked about for decades.

Sabastian Sawe became the first athlete ever to run sub-two hours under record-legal conditions, crossing in 1:59:30. Runner-up Yomif Kejelcha also broke the barrier at 1:59:41 — meaning two men in the same race shattered what was once considered an impossible threshold.

On the women’s side, Tigst Assefa won a dramatic sprint finish while lowering her own women’s-only world record by nine seconds. All three podium finishers clocked times under 2:16. London has now held the women’s-only world record continuously since 2004.

Schools, Communities, and the Next Generation of Runners

Beyond the elite drama, organizers have placed a significant focus on grassroots impact. Every London school will receive two guaranteed race entries for teachers or staff, with additional places going to the five boroughs the route passes through — Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, and the City of Westminster.

All extra income generated by the expanded event will be distributed through the London Marathon Foundation to programs supporting physical activity for young people across London and the UK.

Organizers are also projecting that the weekend will become “the largest fundraising moment in UK sport” — a bold claim, but one backed by the fact that 2026 participants have already raised over £90 million for charity.

An Unprecedented Logistical Undertaking

None of this happens without serious groundwork. London Marathon Events has had to secure permission from local councils, emergency services, and London Mayor Sadiq Khan to stage an event with no real precedent anywhere in the world.

There is no blueprint for a two-day, 100,000-runner marathon weekend in a major world city. London is writing one from scratch — and if the reaction from the running community is anything to go by, the world will be watching every step of it.
