Five-time CrossFit Games champion Mat Fraser is no stranger to competition.

But his recent experience at HYROX, a global fitness race combining running and functional workouts, offered a refreshing shift from his usual high-intensity training.

Competing alongside his longtime friend and business partner Matt Oโ€™Keefe, Fraser embraced the challenge with an open mindโ€”and walked away with a new appreciation for the eventโ€™s unique format.

โ€œIf I see any numbers on the rower sub-1:45, weโ€™re having a talk.โ€

Preparing for HYROX: A Different Kind of Competition

Before race day, Fraser took part in a community workout at PFC CrossFit in Las Vegas, where he connected with members, ambassadors, and friends.

The casual training session set the tone for the weekend, reinforcing the inclusive and supportive nature of HYROX.

Unlike CrossFit, where workouts are often unknown until just before competition, HYROX provides a set course, allowing athletes to strategize and prepare.

This predictability was a major draw for Fraser. “We know what the workout is ahead of time, so we know how to prepare,” he noted.

The one-day format also appealed to him, eliminating the need for multi-day recovery and allowing competitors to fully enjoy the experience.

Race Day: Finding the Right Pace

Fraser approached the race with a clear plan: start conservatively and adjust as needed. However, as the race began, he quickly noticed other competitors pushing the pace.

While he had no intention of chasing the leaders, he focused on maintaining a steady rhythmโ€”something he admitted was not always his strong suit.

“Pacing was never my forte,” he joked. However, the team format worked in his favor. Since partners couldnโ€™t begin the workout stations until both had arrived, Fraser took advantage of the built-in checkpoints.

โ€œIf my partner wanted to run 40 seconds ahead of me, that was fineโ€”Iโ€™d be there in a minute,โ€ he said.

Midway through the race, he recognized the need to scale back his effort. The middle two runs required a significant drop in pace to prevent burnout.

Despite the adjustments, he powered through and completed the event, proving that even elite athletes must listen to their bodies and adapt on the fly.

A Unique and Inclusive Fitness Event

One of Fraserโ€™s biggest takeaways from HYROX was its accessibility.

Unlike traditional competitions that separate skill levels, HYROX places entry-level participants next to elite athletes, creating an environment where everyone completes the same race at their own pace.

“You can make it as easy or as hard as you want,” he explained. The eventโ€™s structure allows competitors to tailor their approach, whether that means pushing to the limit or simply enjoying the challenge.

This flexibility, combined with the community-driven atmosphere, made the experience especially memorable.

Looking Ahead: More Races, More Community

Fraser has no plans to stop at just one HYROX event. Inspired by the experience, he hopes to organize future races with a larger group, bringing more of his community into the fold.

He also expressed admiration for his wife, Sammy, who participated in the event while several months pregnant.

Despite the physical demands, she paced herself, shared the workload with her partner, and enjoyed the raceโ€”an approach that embodies the inclusive nature of HYROX.

A New Perspective on Competition

For Fraser, HYROX was more than just another fitness challenge. It provided a fresh perspective on competition, emphasizing adaptability, teamwork, and personal pacing over pure intensity.

With plans for another race already in mind, Fraser is eager to dive deeper into the HYROX experienceโ€”this time, with an even bigger support system by his side.
