Training 1,000 Hours Per Year: Breaking Down Elite Volume
Training at elite levels means accumulating approximately 1,000 hours annually. During peak training months from May through November, weekly volume reaches staggering heights.
Last week I had 32 hours of training. I have 2 and a half hours of intensity three training, which is threshold. I have two hours of strength during a week.
That’s 32 hours in a single week—more than many recreational athletes train in an entire month. But volume alone doesn’t tell the whole story.

Here’s how those 32 hours break down across different modalities:
- Roller skiing: 60-65% of total volume
- Running: 20-25% of training
- Cycling: 10% of sessions
- Strength training: 5-7% of weekly hours
The emphasis on roller skiing makes sense—specificity matters most at elite levels. Roller skis come in two varieties: skating versions that simulate skating technique, and classic versions with grip for diagonal striding and double-poling.

Running is really similar to classic skiing. When I’m doing like a 3-hour running session in the mud, it’s tough terrain. It is really hard to run and we are running with poles. So, you’re kind of simulating a little bit skiing more with running.

Here’s where conventional endurance training gets flipped upside down. While most coaches preach zone two as the foundation for aerobic development, this elite skier does something radically different.
I barely do zone two, actually. What we have figured out is that if I do zone two, that’s kind of what’s destroying my fast muscle fibers. So, for me, I do 88% of my training in zone one.

What a Typical Training Day Actually Looks Like
Daily training follows a polarized pattern:
Day One (Volume Focus):
- Morning: 3 hours zone one
- Afternoon: 2 hours zone one
Day Two (Intensity Focus):
- 30-minute warm-up
- 60-75 minutes threshold work
- Cooldown period
That threshold work happens primarily on roller skis, directly mimicking race demands. Speaking of races, the training matches competition intensity remarkably well.
When I go do a 50k, I do more or less threshold, you know. So I try to prioritize having like an hour and a half, hour and 15 minutes each session on threshold instead of going out and do three hours of zone two.
Zone Two Confusion: Why Elite Athletes Experience It Differently
Zone two training affects elite athletes completely differently than recreational exercisers. When fitness reaches world-class levels, zone two becomes genuinely taxing.
For highly trained athletes, zone two sits just below threshold. Sustaining that intensity for extended periods creates significant recovery demands that interfere with high-quality threshold sessions.

The recovery aspect is kind of the most important part here. It just makes the total volume a little bit too heavy for me in terms of recovery. Threshold is more similar to where I’m going to race while you look into cyclists where they do a lot of their race in zone two.
Cycling races involve substantial time in zone two, making zone two training highly specific. Cross-country skiing races demand near-threshold efforts throughout, making threshold training more race-specific than zone two work.
The Impact Factor Nobody Discusses
Physical impact matters tremendously when calculating total training stress. Running at higher speeds doesn’t just increase cardiovascular demand—it multiplies musculoskeletal stress exponentially.
My morning session this morning when I was running an hour on the treadmill, I was running 7 mph and that is really easy. Imagine just having the impact on the muscles if you’re going to run 9 mph just because that’s zone two. The impact on the body as well is important to calculate into the total amount of training and recovery you’re doing.
Strategic Energy Management During Racing
Cross-country skiing provides unique opportunities for in-race recovery that runners simply don’t experience. Downhills become strategic recovery periods.
Compared to running, it is easier to do cross country skiing. You hammer harder in the uphills, but then you have the downhills and the downhills is where you recover and charge your energy before the next uphill. In a 10k you’re basically going full speed in every single uphill. Then you just need to use the downhills really smart to be able to keep the speed up, but also save and charge your energy.
Aerobic fitness determines how quickly heart rate drops after maximal uphill efforts. Superior aerobic capacity means faster recovery between hard surges, enabling sustained performance throughout competition.
Running Isn’t Actually Essential
Despite running comprising 20-25% of training volume, it’s not irreplaceable. One season proved that conclusively.
I don’t think running is necessarily very important to do well on skiing. One year I had a year where I was injured in my hamstring and I was not able to run almost at all. That is one of the years that I’ve done the best in terms of results in the World Cup.
That revelation underscores training specificity. While running provides simulation benefits, especially when done with poles in challenging terrain, it’s ultimately optional for skiing success.

Lactate Testing: Monitoring Threshold Precision
Regular lactate testing ensures threshold sessions hit intended intensities. Testing happens during nearly every threshold workout.
We were testing the lactate more or less every single threshold session we have just to make sure we are in the line on where we want to be.
This frequent testing prevents intensity drift—training too hard or too easy relative to intended zones. Precision matters enormously when differentiating between zone one recovery and threshold work.
Recovery Fundamentals: Sleep Beats Technology
Recovery practices include several modalities, but priorities remain clear. Technology helps, but basics matter most.
Primary recovery tools:
- Sauna and cold plunge (frequent use at home)
- Red light therapy
- Compression boots (occasional use)
- Sleep and nutrition (non-negotiable foundations)
I’m a huge fan of using my sauna and cold plunge. I also been using my red light therapy. But I think just sleep, you know, sleep and healthy food is one of my key factors to my recovery.
Daytime naps provide exceptional recovery benefits without equipment or complexity.
Sometimes it’s just good to go back and sleep, you know. Just an hour in the middle of the day after a hard training session is just easy to lay in the bed and sleep for an hour and I think that’s kind of the best recovery you can do more than just all the other things you can add on.
Recovery technology serves as supplementation, not replacement, for fundamental recovery practices. Sleep remains the most powerful recovery tool available.
