Protein is essential for maintenance, repair, and growth of body tissues including muscle, bone, and connective tissue. Adequate protein intake supports metabolic functions, immune health, and synthesis of enzymes and hormones.

Its importance is particularly pronounced in physically active individuals, as exercise induces muscle protein breakdown and increases demand for amino acids to support muscle repair and adaptation.

UK Guidelines Based on Outdated Minimums

Current dietary recommendation for protein intake in the UK is 0.34 grams per pound of body weight per day. This figure was initially presented by the UK’s Department of Health in 1991.

Current evidence does not demonstrate clinically meaningful harm in healthy individuals consuming higher protein intakes. However, caution is important for those with pre-existing conditions such as kidney disease.

Although earlier research suggested approximately 20 grams of protein per meal is sufficient to maximize acute muscle protein synthesis, more recent evidence indicates substantially higher protein intakes per meal—30 to 60 grams—can be utilized.

Time to Reframe What’s Normal

When communicated as a per-meal target, it becomes much easier to put into action. For average body weight of around 175 pounds, daily protein goal would be around 120 grams—which would be an average of 30 grams per meal over four meals daily.

Practices that are widespread are rarely described as extreme, even when their long-term consequences are.

History suggests social norms are not reliable indicators of rationality. It’s plausible that future generations may view both industrial-scale animal production and chronically sedentary lifestyles as characteristic harmful excesses of our time.

Ultimately, the relevant question is not whether a lifestyle appears extreme relative to prevailing norms, but whether it’s the best choice in light of the best available evidence.
