Regenerative medicine specialist Dr. Khan Wen has a story that reads like fiction, but every word is true.
At 13 years old, she escaped Vietnam on a makeshift raft with nothing but a raincoat for a sail.
Seven days later, she landed in Malaysia with a dream: become a doctor in America.
Now at 58, she’s not just living that dream—she’s rewriting the rules of aging itself, recently winning a physique competition and running one of the nation’s top regenerative clinics in Austin, Texas.
In a recent conversation with health podcaster Dan, Dr. Wen revealed the cutting-edge therapies keeping her looking decades younger than her chronological age—and why aging might be more reversible than anyone thought.

From Refugee Raft to Medical School
Dr. Wen’s journey began in Vietnam, where her father served as a physician for the U.S. Army.
If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.
- Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
- Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
- Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle
When communists took over in 1975, he was sent to a re-education camp for years. The family had only enough gold to pay for two people to escape.
I beg my mom. I’m like, you know she only have enough gold for my older sister and I said please let me go cuz I need to take care of my older sister.
What was supposed to be a ship turned out to be a tiny wooden raft—no engine, barely enough space for 20 people.
When the anchor lifted and the boat started drifting, 13-year-old Dr. Wen made a split-second decision that changed everything.
I jump over the last minute and of course my older sister had to follow. So she jumped and then she got in the waters. We had to pull her up. This is like in the middle of the night.
By morning, they discovered the engine was broken. No gas. No water. No food.
They drifted for seven days using her small raincoat as a sail.
I told my sister, I’m like, I’m so sorry that you follow me. And now look at us. We’re just drifting. But don’t follow me anymore. If we get stopped by the pirate, my plan is I’m going to jump in the water.
Miraculously, they survived. After six months in a Philippine refugee camp learning English, they arrived in California.

Dr. Wen worked after school, lived in the library, shopped at Salvation Army—even buying her medical school interview suit there. She earned a scholarship to USC, got accepted to medical school, and eventually sponsored her entire family to America.
Crisis Becomes Catalyst: From ICU Doctor to Regenerative Pioneer
After completing internal medicine and critical care fellowships, Dr. Wen spent over a decade in hospital ICU settings.
But something was wrong. Patients kept coming back sicker, with longer medication lists.
Then came her wake-up call.
I was driving home from a night shift and I kind of fell asleep and luckily it’s like 2:00 in the morning. I call my husband. I’m like, I got a flat tire, but it was more than that. I fell asleep.
Shortly after hitting the guard rail, she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease—an autoimmune thyroid condition that left her unable to walk between patients.
She was almost in thyroid storm, a life-threatening crisis.

I had to stop. I had to pause. That is another event is in life sometime this crisis and it led you to a different direction.
Traditional endocrinology removed her thyroid and prescribed Synthroid. She didn’t feel better.
That’s when she started asking different questions—not just what her diagnosis was, but why her body was attacking itself.
Functional medicine provided answers conventional training never did.
Aging Isn’t Inevitable—It’s Reversible
Dr. Wen’s clinic focuses on one radical premise: aging is the biggest cause of mortality, and it can be reversed.
We know now aging is the biggest cause of mobility or mortality. And we also know now there are at least 12 causes for us to age.
Her approach starts with comprehensive assessment—body composition, VO2 max, genetics, detailed lab work—then builds a customized protocol addressing:
- Lifestyle optimization: Nutrition, workout regimen, sleep
- Hormone balancing: Sex hormones, thyroid, vitamin D, cortisol, insulin
- Peptide therapy: Targeted signaling molecules for specific anti-aging pathways
- Advanced regenerative therapies: Stem cells, V cells, young plasma exchange
Unlike conventional medicine’s symptom-drug approach, regenerative medicine targets root causes and cellular function.

Peptides: Small Molecules, Massive Impact
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as signaling agents, telling cells how to behave.
Dr. Wen designs peptide protocols targeting specific aging pathways. Her favorites include:
Thymosin Alpha-1: The Immune Regulator
It’s one of my favorite. It’s a safe way to start on everyone. It address that immune regulating immunosenescence meaning as we age the immune system is getting older just like we age.
This peptide helps with autoimmune conditions, chronic fatigue, allergies, and age-related immune decline by modulating the immune system—bringing down hyperactivity while boosting protective responses.
BPC-157 and TB-500: Repair Powerhouses
BPC-157 excels at healing bone, joints, ligaments, and tendons. When taken orally, it’s exceptional for gut repair.
TB-500 supports general recovery, reduces inflammation, and helps with nerve and soft tissue healing.
For severe gut issues like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, Dr. Wen combines BPC-157 with KPV and larazotide for remarkable results.

Tesamorelin: Growth Hormone Without Injection
It helps produce growth hormone. Very very healing, very effective for muscle building, to reduce visceral fat, it also improve lipid profile, repair the endothelial function, improving blood pressure, stronger bone, better lower brain inflammation leading to better memory.
Unlike synthetic growth hormone, tesamorelin signals your brain to produce more naturally—safer and more physiologic.
Brain Optimization: Semax, Selank, and Dihexa
Semax enhances cognitive function and is typically administered as a nasal spray for direct brain access.
Selank offers similar benefits with added anxiety and OCD relief—perfect for evening use.
Dihexa is particularly powerful for cognitive enhancement and can be taken orally or topically.
If your brain stays healthy, your mitochondria stay healthy, then everything is your immune system is better. Obviously, your cognitive function, your brain’s better, you age slower. It affects everything.
Young Plasma Exchange: The Ultimate Anti-Aging Hack?
Perhaps the most controversial—and exciting—therapy Dr. Wen offers is therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), also called young plasma infusion.
The science traces back to 2005 parabiosis studies at Berkeley, where researchers connected old and young mice circulatory systems.
Results were stunning: old mice became smarter, their skin turned shiny and black instead of gray, muscles regenerated faster, inflammation decreased, and mitochondrial function improved.
Then they look at the young plasma and it turn out young plasma has more regenerative protein. It has more signal to promote stem cell to be activated. It’s anti-senescent. It promote mitochondrial function versus as we age you start losing it.
How It Works
Dr. Wen hooks patients up to a machine that separates blood components, removes old plasma loaded with inflammatory factors and senescent signals, then replaces it with plasma from screened young donors aged 18-25.
Plasma comprises 53-55% of whole blood. While 90% is water, that remaining 10% contains a rich cocktail of proteins, hormones, cytokines, and—most importantly—extracellular vesicles called exosomes.
It turned out there was a study in 2024 in rodent showing that it’s the exosome from young plasma that signal the cell to act young.
Every cell in your body bathes in plasma. As we accumulate toxins—microplastics, mold, heavy metals—and inflammatory factors increase while regenerative signals decline, we essentially marinate our cells in “old” messages.
Young plasma reverses this, teaching cells to act young again.
Benefits Beyond Belief
People often feel better within days just from old plasma removal. Their bodies rev up production of youthful factors while eliminating inflammatory debris.

Adding young plasma amplifies results exponentially.
I have 5 liters of young plasma in me and I feel amazing.
Young plasma also removes inhibitory factors suppressing dormant stem cells, allowing them to reactivate naturally—making it an ideal precursor to stem cell therapy.
V Cells: Your Body’s Hidden Regenerative Reserve
Very Small Embryonic-Like (VSEL) cells represent another breakthrough.
These cells circulate dormant in adult bodies, activating only under stress. Dr. Todd Ovokaitys developed a laser system that turns them on intentionally.
The process is elegant: draw blood, separate dormant cells, shine laser to activate them, reinfuse them, then use external laser to guide them to target areas—brain, thymus gland, thyroid, reproductive organs.
These cells are very small so they can totally cross the blood brain barrier. And they have the ability to turn into many different cells, but they stop before they can turn into tumor.
For Dr. Wen personally, the first time she received V cells, she could read without reading glasses—even at night in dim restaurant lighting.

The Foundation: Resistance Training and Hormesis
Despite all the advanced therapies, Dr. Wen emphasizes fundamentals remain critical.
Exercise has so many powerful pathways that allow us to be optimized.
Her routine includes 3-5 days weekly of resistance training plus high-intensity interval training (HIIT). At 58, she maintains visible abs and muscle definition that puts 30-year-olds to shame.
Resistance training increases mitochondria—the true biohack for anti-aging. Combined with higher protein intake (especially crucial for women in menopause), it preserves muscle mass that naturally declines with age.
Dr. Wen tracks VO2 max religiously, noting it has the strongest correlation to longevity. Higher oxygen-carrying capacity means better cellular function across all systems.
She also practices hormesis—brief beneficial stressors like cold plunges and sauna.
Every morning I do just quick one minute cold plunge because I’m respecting hormesis, right? You don’t need a lot. If you do too much it becomes bad and then just listen to your body.
Sexual Health: The Overlooked Longevity Marker
Dr. Wen is remarkably candid about a topic most physicians avoid: sexual optimization.
If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.
- Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
- Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years

I told my husband I said I love you but I’m asexual now. I have no desire and I understand if you leave me.
She experienced complete loss of libido from stress, overwork, and hormonal decline. The guilt and relationship strain were devastating.
Her solution combined hormone optimization, peptides, nutrition, and targeted injections using young plasma, stem cells, and exosomes in intimate areas to restore circulation and function.
Now I educate my female clients you know I’m like it’s not you it’s your hormone but it’s totally fixable.
The transformation extended beyond libido—energy, motivation for life, overall vitality all improved.
Healthy sexuality correlates with better overall health, making this an essential but neglected aspect of longevity medicine.
Pain to Purpose: Lessons from Extreme Adversity
Dr. Wen’s journey includes another heartbreaking chapter: her second son was diagnosed with autism at age two.
As a physician-mother, she enrolled him in autism programs but sensed something else was wrong. She ordered an MRI that revealed Moyamoya disease—a rare cerebrovascular condition.
If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.
- Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses

The stress was overwhelming, yet it drove her deeper into root-cause medicine.
From pain to purpose you know it’s just like it never end you just learn more and get stronger and more wisdom and more open.
Her son is now highly functional, and the experience expanded her understanding of healing beyond conventional boundaries.
Throughout her life, crisis has catalyzed transformation—from floating on a raft to medical school, from autoimmune disease to regenerative medicine pioneer, from sexual dysfunction to helping others reclaim vitality.
The Future Is Now
When asked about the future of anti-aging medicine, Dr. Wen’s enthusiasm is palpable.
What it mean is that aging is potentially reversible. It’s a modifiable cellular process.
Young plasma’s ability to alter age-related gene expression—turning bad genes off and reactivating silenced beneficial ones—suggests we’re at the frontier of something revolutionary.
Even better: these therapies are becoming increasingly accessible. What was exclusively for the wealthy a decade ago is now within reach for many more people.

Dr. Wen’s clinic combines assessment, optimization, peptides, and advanced regenerative therapies including stem cells, V cells, exosomes, and young plasma exchange—addressing skin, hair, brain, sexual function, and systemic aging simultaneously.
Her personal results speak volumes: at 58, she competes in physique competitions, maintains thick lustrous hair, has visible abs, needs minimal reading glasses, and radiates energy.
But she’s quick to acknowledge the foundation remains non-negotiable: quality sleep, nutrient-dense food, resistance training, stress management, and listening to your body.
Advanced therapies amplify what good fundamentals begin.
For Dr. Khan Wen, the 13-year-old girl who jumped onto a raft with nothing but faith and determination now helps others take their own leaps—into younger, healthier, more vibrant versions of themselves.
