It’s almost 10 times as powerful at reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. And it’s really not that surprising because we do know that exercise intensity really does drive a lot of the metabolic adaptations and benefits that occur from exercise.

Why such a dramatic difference? The answer lies in how muscles respond to intense work.

The Lactate Connection

When muscles work vigorously, they produce energy faster than mitochondria alone can handle. This creates lactate—not merely a waste product, but an active signaling molecule that functions almost like a hormone.

Lactate triggers increased production and activation of GLUT4 transporters. These proteins pull glucose from bloodstream into muscle cells, and they remain active long after exercise ends.

Lactate is actually what is responsible for signaling to increase these GLUT4 transporters. The transporters actually last around for a while. So there’s a lasting effect. It’s not like they’re there when you’re working out and then they go back. No, they stay active for quite a while, right? Bringing more glucose in.

Muscle contractions during vigorous exercise can increase contractions 50 to 100 times more than at rest. This mechanical action alone forces glucose into muscle tissue.

When you’re forcing your muscles to work so hard that they can’t produce all the energy they need from just using their mitochondria alone, your muscle’s like, “Dude, I need more mitochondria. This isn’t working, right?” So, that’s an adaptation that’s happening and it makes sense.

Volume-matched studies confirm that high-intensity interval training produces greater mitochondrial growth than moderate intensity exercise. More intense stimulus equals greater adaptation.

What This Means Practically

These findings align with previous randomized controlled trials showing sprint interval training sessions under 10 minutes producing similar benefits to 45-60 minute moderate sessions.
