Fitness coaching isn’t just about handing someone a workout plan and hoping for the best.

It’s about understanding the entire person—their limitations, their goals, their sleep patterns, even their brain chemistry.

In a recent training session, coach Justin Mihaly took followers behind the scenes of what elite-level coaching actually looks like, using five-time Mr. Olympia Chris Bumstead as his primary example.

What emerged wasn’t just a workout—it was a masterclass in personalized programming, real-time problem-solving, and why cookie-cutter training plans fail most people.

Meeting Athletes Where They Actually Are

Before a single weight touched Bumstead’s hands, Mihaly asked a critical question: Where are you at right now?

Context matters enormously in coaching. Bumstead wasn’t walking into this session fresh off eight hours of sleep with zero obligations.

FULL-BODY TRAINING

If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.

  • Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
  • Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
  • Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle

I mean personal season of life, which you always take into account, baby’s not sleeping great. So adjusting program and rest time to make sure that’s good. In a strength phase right now of an overall functional athletic building phase.

He was managing a newborn, dealing with bilateral shoulder issues—particularly his left shoulder—and currently focused on building maximal strength.

Most coaches would simply hand over “Day 3: Chest and Back” without considering these variables. Mihaly built the entire session around them.

The Pre-Workout That Actually Matters

What separates elite coaching from mediocre training starts before the first working set.

Mihaly implemented what he calls the “P3 system”—a comprehensive warm-up protocol designed to increase proprioception, activate underperforming muscles, and inhibit overactive ones.

We’re getting things that are too hot to cool down and we’re getting the things that are not hot enough to heat up before we actually go in and see what the body’s talking about.

For Bumstead specifically, this meant tissue scraping, active release techniques, and targeted strengthening of neck extensors and shoulder external rotators—muscles that testing revealed were weak.

This wasn’t random. These exact muscle groups would directly improve his bench press performance and reduce shoulder impingement risk.

Segmental Strengthening: The Unsexy Foundation

While Bumstead held isometric positions and performed external rotation work, Mihaly explained the “why” behind movements that looked nothing like traditional chest training.

Bumstead’s posture showed classic forward rotation—everything internally rotated and protracted. This positioning creates shoulder impingement during pressing movements.

The solution wasn’t just to press lighter or avoid certain exercises. It was to strengthen the exact ranges of motion where Bumstead was weakest.

Imagine if all of this was strong enough to actually support how strong he is here. These tissues don’t even get a chance to go down to learn the range. So, I’m forcing it, and then he gets to contract in that range of motion.

Strategic Exercise Pairing for Maximum Output

The main workout featured flat bench press paired with mid-neutral grip chin-ups—two seemingly unrelated movements.

The pairing was brilliantly intentional. By alternating antagonistic movement patterns, Bumstead achieved nearly five minutes of rest between pressing sets while actually improving muscle recruitment.

When you contract opposite muscles, they actually help each other recruit better. So, again, one of those little like 1% here, 2% there, I’m making sure that he can lift as much load as possible.

This approach allowed maximum loading—the primary driver for strength gains—while managing fatigue intelligently.

Real-Time Program Adjustments

What happened next revealed elite coaching in action. The written program called for five sets: one set of ten reps, followed by four sets of six.

But Mihaly wasn’t married to the numbers on paper.

After your first set of six, if you’re like, this feels okay, the weight’s moving okay, then we’ll see how far we can get with the volume. Maybe it’s just your nervous system needs more time to warm up. It’s like, ah, yeah, we’re doing three sets of six today and then we’re moving on.

Programs are written in pencil at Standard, Mihaly’s coaching system. The athlete who walked in for assessment, the one training today, and the one who’ll train tomorrow are three different people.

Cookie-cutter programming ignores this reality.

The Neuromuscular Learning Approach to Strength

As Bumstead worked through his sets, Mihaly added micro-loading—small weight increases between sets using fractional plates.

The reasoning challenges conventional “just add five pounds” wisdom.

Strength training is just learning. So, it’d be like you going and learning a new language, and it’s like, “Okay, say hola.” You say it once, and it’s like, “Okay, see you later. Like, remember that a week from now.” As opposed to like, “Okay, we’re going to say hola 100 times today.”

By using micro-loading, Mihaly maximized volume without causing technical breakdown. More quality repetitions equals faster learning of new movement patterns and strength ranges.

This approach proved successful—Bumstead completed all prescribed sets with room to spare, something Mihaly admitted he wouldn’t have bet on before the session.

Why Essential Amino Acids During Training Matter

Mid-session, Bumstead consumed essential amino acids—a practice Mihaly considers non-negotiable for optimal results.

I will die on that hill. I’ve seen it clinically. I’ve seen it research-wise, and I’ve seen it with a ton of other coaches who push essential amino acid use in their training. You will get exponentially better results.

The science behind this recommendation centers on blood flow. Working muscles receive dramatically increased blood volume during training—blood that carries nutrients.

Essential amino acids are pre-digested protein that enters the bloodstream immediately, delivering anabolic signals directly to working tissues.

Benefits include:

  • Improved work capacity through lactic acid management
  • Enhanced recovery between sets

Mihaly noted he’d push Bumstead toward 30 grams during training if gut tolerance allowed.

Progressive Specificity: From Big Movements to Targeted Rehab

The session’s structure revealed sophisticated exercise sequencing.

A-series: Heavy compound movements (bench press, chin-ups) with 20-30% intensity spread that progressively narrowed across weeks.

B-series: Moderate load accessories (face pulls with quarter reps, overhead press) using constant load with planned drop-offs.

C-series: Dynamic rehabilitation movements (dumbbell muscle snatches) targeting specific weaknesses athletically.

Each series addressed different aspects of Bumstead’s shoulder issue while building toward his strength goals.

We trained the shortened position, we did it in a small movement, we did it in a big movement. Now, he’s doing something dynamic working the lengthened position of that external rotation in a movement that is going to carry over athletically.

Avoiding Single-System Mistakes

Mihaly criticized both extremes of the training world. Pure strength coaches might prescribe endless heavy deadlifts and rack pulls for back weakness.

Pure rehabilitation specialists might keep athletes doing table exercises for twelve weeks before allowing real training.

Effective coaching requires pulling from multiple disciplines based on individual needs, not dogmatic adherence to one methodology.

Personality-Based Coaching Adjustments

Beyond physical assessment, Mihaly’s system includes neurotransmitter testing that reveals personality traits affecting training response.

Four primary neurotransmitters—dopamine, acetylcholine, serotonin, and GABA—correlate with predictable behavioral patterns and training preferences.

Dopamine-dominant individuals need novelty and respond well to risk-taking in training progressions. Others require different coaching language and progression strategies.

Chris, he might be too conservative. So, I need to make sure that I’m instilling confidence into him. I’m explaining why I’m making the decisions that I’m making so that he can trust me and do the right thing.

This psychological component extends beyond workout design into nutrition compliance, rest day adherence, and long-term program sustainability.

The Gap Between Goals and Enjoyment

Perhaps the session’s most important insight came near the end. Bumstead clearly wasn’t enjoying every aspect of this training style.

He wanted to know when he could return to different training methods. But enjoyment wasn’t the priority—goal achievement was.

Mihaly’s role as coach meant pushing Bumstead toward his stated objectives, even when that meant prescribing less attractive work.

This tension exists for every trainee. Someone wanting to lose body fat may prefer not tracking nutrition. Someone building strength may dislike rehabilitation exercises.

Effective coaching requires honest conversation about priorities and accountability to stated goals rather than momentary preferences.

Why Cookie-Cutter Programs Fail Most People

This single training session demonstrated why generic programming produces generic results.

Consider what individualization required:

  • Life context assessment (sleep quality, stress, family demands)
  • Physical evaluation (range of motion testing, strength imbalances, injury history)
  • Goal clarification (strength focus, not just hypertrophy)
  • Real-time adjustments (load modifications, volume changes, technique refinement)
  • Strategic exercise selection (movements chosen for specific effects, not just muscle groups)
  • Personality-based coaching (communication style, progression speed, confidence building)
  • Supplementation timing (intra-workout nutrition for enhanced recovery)

No app or PDF can replicate this level of specificity.

Yet this represents standard practice in Mihaly’s coaching system—not reserved for elite bodybuilders but applied to business owners, recreational athletes, and anyone committed to serious results.

The 1% Improvements That Create 100% Differences

Throughout the session, Mihaly repeatedly referenced small optimizations: micro-loading, strategic exercise pairing, personality-based cueing, supplementation timing.

Individually, each adjustment might improve results by 1-2%. Collectively, they create outcomes that seem impossible to those following generic programs.

This compounds over weeks and months. The person who gets slightly better results each session finds themselves in a completely different place within a training cycle.

Meanwhile, the person following random YouTube workouts or cookie-cutter apps remains frustrated by lack of progress, unaware that dozens of small variables determine success or failure.

As Mihaly concluded, there exists “a level of result that people don’t even know exists that lies on the other side of just getting into the weeds and getting really specific.”

For those tired of spinning wheels with generic programming, that specificity represents the difference between incremental improvement and transformative change.
