The prescription can always be increased if needed, but starting conservative makes adherence more manageable.
The Surprising Benefits of High Protein Intake
Recent research by Joey Antonio and colleagues examined what happens when people consume very high protein amounts—anywhere from 3.3 to 4.4 grams per kilogram of body weight daily.
These studies involved resistance-trained individuals who added 80-100 grams of protein on top of their existing diets. The findings were remarkable: high protein intake facilitated fat loss without additional effort.
The mechanism is elegantly simple. When you consume substantial protein, you naturally consume less of other macronutrients. Protein’s high satiety factor means you feel fuller longer, automatically reducing overall calorie intake.
Is Too Much Protein Dangerous?

For the general healthy population, there have been many studies that have rolled out looking at effects on kidney function, liver function, bone health, and there is virtually zero threat to those organ systems.

Gram for gram, animal proteins typically stimulate muscle protein synthesis more potently than plant proteins. This makes them more “anabolic” in technical terms.
However—and this is crucial—once you hit your total daily protein target, the source matters far less than most people think.

For recreational athletes and fitness enthusiasts, eating three to four times daily works perfectly well, provided total protein intake is optimized.
Could You Eat All Your Protein in One Meal?
Theoretically, yes. For most people with general fitness goals, consuming all daily protein in a single meal wouldn’t derail progress significantly.
However, competitive athletes aiming for top placings might benefit from spreading protein across multiple meals to maximize “microanabolic events”—instances of elevated muscle protein synthesis throughout the day.
We want to maximize the number of microanabolic events in the course of the day. We want to maximize the amount of times you maximally stimulate muscle protein synthesis.
How to Lose Weight Fast (The Right Way)
When someone absolutely needs rapid fat loss—say, for an upcoming wedding—Aragon recommends an aggressive but strategic approach.
Create a caloric deficit of 20-40% below maintenance needs, depending on individual circumstances. The key is maintaining high protein intake throughout this deficit.
This approach is sometimes called a “protein-sparing modified fast.” High protein preserves muscle mass while the caloric deficit drives fat loss.
For someone maintaining weight at 2,000 calories daily, cutting roughly one-third (down to around 1,300-1,400 calories) would create aggressive fat loss. The high protein requirement naturally defaults to relatively low carbohydrate and fat intake.
Making High Protein Intake Practical
Hitting 160+ grams of protein daily might sound daunting, but Aragon’s personal approach demonstrates how manageable it becomes with simple strategies.
- Two meals from whole foods: Chicken, fish, beef, eggs, or other complete protein sources
- Two to three protein smoothies: Each containing two scoops of protein powder (approximately 50 grams)
- Total protein covered: More than half from smoothies alone, making the target easily achievable
This pragmatic approach eliminates the stress of meal planning while ensuring consistent protein intake. Some people prefer grazing throughout the day; others prefer larger, less frequent meals. Both approaches work equally well.
