Belt Squats: A Legitimate Alternative or Cop-Out?

Andrew Huberman, now 49, recently switched to belt squats after progressing through back squats, front squats, and hack squats. His reasoning? Reducing spinal compression while maintaining leg development.

Belt squats involve standing on an elevated platform wearing a specialized belt attached to weights via cable or lever between your legs. The setup allows for tremendous freedom in stance width, depth, and torso angle without loading the shoulders or spine.

Tsatsouline’s response was nuanced and practical.

I’m going to address healthy people like yourself. So if somebody has medical restrictions, you got to do belt squat because the doctor says so. That’s what you got to do.

His main caveat? You must still train your posterior chain comprehensively. Belt squats remove spinal loading, which means your lower back, upper back, and neck need attention elsewhere in your program.

The Powerlifter’s Perspective on Exercise Variation

Tsatsouline explained how competitive powerlifters strategically use variations when training frequency is high. Sometimes one component lags behind.

So you’re going deadlifting and your hands are beat up, use straps, you know, or you come in do the deadlifting and your back feels like, well, it’s time to deadlift. My back is not quite ready. Well, you could go do a narrow sumo or something like that.

This approach allows continued training stimulus without accumulating excessive fatigue in vulnerable areas. Strategic variation becomes more critical as training age increases.

Zercher Squats: The Underrated Alternative

For those seeking spine-friendly leg training, Tsatsouline strongly advocated for Zercher squatsโ€”holding the barbell in the crooks of your elbows.

Again, a fantastic exercise. It does not beat up your shoulders. It does not build up your elbows or your wrists. It may leave some bruises, you know, but it’s okay. You can live with that.

Zercher squats provide significant posterior chain activation while keeping weight in front of the body, naturally encouraging proper positioning and core bracing.

Machines: Why Beginners Should Avoid Them (Usually)

Tsatsouline made a counterintuitive observation about training equipment that flies in the face of typical gym advice.

Machines are very useful for advanced trainees and fairly useless for beginners.

Most gyms do the oppositeโ€”putting novices on machines “for safety” while experienced lifters gravitate toward free weights. This backward approach creates problems.

Beginners need to develop stabilizer muscles and movement patterns. Machines remove this requirement entirely. When someone trained exclusively on machines attempts free weight exercises, they lack foundational stability and control.

When Machines Make Sense

Advanced lifters can leverage machines strategically. Tsatsouline referenced legendary powerlifting coach Marty Gallagher recommending leg presses in specific deadlift stances to increase leg drive without taxing the back.

Key principle: Machines work for those who already possess movement competency and use them to address specific weaknesses or manage fatigue.

The Problem With Long Cycles for Older Lifters

Legendary powerlifters Ernie Frantz and Rick Crain discovered critical limitations as they aged.

They were observing how an older lifter can’t afford to start as light because he ends up losing ground too much and he can’t afford to go as heavy as well or not for long.

Traditional periodization starts light and builds to peak intensity over many weeks. Older athletes lose too much strength during extended light phases. Conversely, they can’t sustain peak intensities as long as younger lifters.

Solution? Cycles of 6-8 weeks rather than 12-16. This allows sufficient intensity to maintain strength while avoiding excessive accumulated fatigue.

Four Types of Progression Explained

Tsatsouline outlined different progression models, each with specific applications:

Linear Progression: Simply adding weight each session. Works only for rank beginners who improve rapidly regardless of programming.

Wave Progression: Weight increases followed by strategic reductions before climbing again. Even classic American powerlifting cycles contain waves.

If you did a set of five with 500 lbs and then you went to 520 for triple, 520 for triple is a lot easier. So there is a deload built in there just people don’t realize this.

Step Loading: Starting heavier than expected and maintaining that weight until it feels manageable, then increasing. Tsatsouline called this the “George Costanza approach”โ€”doing the opposite of conventional wisdom.

This works exceptionally well for do-it-yourself trainees who want simplicity without chasing records. Rather than progressive overload, think regressive difficulty.

Variable Overload: Used in Soviet weightlifting and Russian powerlifting, this approach embraces controlled chaos with 20%+ volume fluctuations session-to-session.

It is just based on pure aperiodicity, irregularity. So it’s like imagine muscle confusion, but the smart kind and nervous system confusion.

No linear progression exists. Advanced athletes use this to prevent adaptation plateaus.

Practical Application for Masters Athletes

Huberman’s observation about 4-week blocks aligns with practical lifestyle management. Monthly planning accommodates travel, work demands, and life events better than rigid quarter-year commitments.

The body doesn’t recognize calendar distinctions between February and March. Consistency across shorter blocks creates long-term progress without the rigidity that causes program abandonment.

The Bigger Picture: Training Smarter Not Harder

These recommendations share common threads: specificity, sustainability, and strategic variation.

Belt squats work when posterior chain training happens elsewhere. Machines serve advanced lifters who understand their application. Shorter cycles benefit those who can’t afford extended light phases or prolonged peak intensities.

For lifters over 40, the question shifts from “What can I tolerate?” to “What produces results without unnecessary cost?”

Training longevity requires acknowledging changing recovery capacity while refusing to abandon intensity. Strategic exercise selection and intelligent programming allow continued strength development decades into a training career.

The strongest lifters aren’t those who train hardest but those who train smart enough to keep training.
