The 2025 CrossFit Open is just around the corner, but registration numbers are trailing far behind previous years.
With only 16 days left before the first workout, total sign-ups are noticeably sluggish compared to 2024.
While a last-minute surge is still possible, current trends suggest a significant drop in participation for the world’s largest fitness competition.

Registration Numbers: 2025 vs. 2024
As of Day 26, 2025 registration totals sit at 73,179—a 35% decrease from the 113,103 registrations at the same point in 2024. Daily growth this year has also slowed, averaging 2,571 new registrations per day, compared to 3,685 per day in 2024.
The most recent three days of registration show a consistent gap between the two years:
Day | 2025 Registrations | 2024 Registrations | Difference | 2025 Daily Growth | 2024 Daily Growth |
24 | 68,452 | 106,700 | -35.85% | 2,263 | 5,033 |
25 | 70,506 | 109,754 | -35.76% | 2,054 | 3,054 |
26 | 73,179 | 113,103 | -35.30% | 2,673 | 3,349 |
While registration typically gains momentum closer to the Open’s start date, this year’s numbers raise questions about how many athletes will ultimately participate.
Key Dates for the 2025 Open
- Registration Opened: January 15, 2025, at noon PT
- Workout 25.1 Begins: February 27, 2025, at noon PT
- Submission Deadline for 25.1: March 3, 2025, at 5 p.m. PT
- Final Submission Deadline for 25.3: March 17, 2025
Historically, the bulk of Open registrations occurs in the final 10–14 days leading up to the announcement of the first workout and continues through the submission deadline for 25.1. However, this year’s slow start suggests that registrations may not hit previous highs.
Slower Daily Growth in 2025
When comparing daily registration trends, 2025 has only surpassed 2024’s daily growth twice—on Day 14 and Day 21. In contrast, 2024 saw consistently higher daily totals throughout the early registration period, with no day dropping below 2,200 sign-ups.
Day | 2025 Daily Growth | 2024 Daily Growth |
14 | 3,349 | 2,930 |
21 | 3,177 | 2,995 |
In 2025, seven days saw daily registrations fall below 2,000, something that didn’t happen at all in 2024 before the submission deadline for the first workout.
Count Up vs. Count Down: Tracking the Numbers
Registration trends can be analyzed in two ways: “Count Up” and “Count Down.”
- Count Up tracks the cumulative number of registrations from Day 0 to the submission deadline for Workout 25.1.
- Count Down starts from the submission deadline and works backward to show how numbers compare at similar points in previous years.
The “Count Down” method offers a more reliable year-over-year comparison since it accounts for minor differences in registration start dates. CrossFit HQ reportedly uses this model to monitor registration trends, focusing on how sign-ups accelerate in the days leading up to the deadline.
The Anticipated Final Surge
While 2025 registration may appear sluggish now, it’s not unusual for participation to spike dramatically just before the deadline. In both 2023 and 2024, over 50% of total registrations occurred within the final two weeks before and during the first workout submission window.
For example, 2024 registrations jumped from 175,019 (10 days out) to 342,792 by the submission deadline. Similar exponential growth was observed in 2023 and 2022. If the pattern holds, 2025 may still close the gap in the coming days.
Prize Purse and Competitive Divisions
This year’s prize purse stands at $731,790, allocated across several competitive divisions:
- Individual Games: $358,577.10
- Team Games: $73,179.00
- Open Individual Division: $36,589.50
- Open Affiliate Division: $146,358.00
- Masters Games: $73,179.00
- Adaptive Games: $21,953.70
- Online Semifinals: $21,953.70
These figures will continue to rise as registrations increase in the coming weeks.
