27 Years Ago, He Made a Drunken Bet to Walk From Argentina to England. Now He’s 1,500km From Finishing the Most Insane Journey on Earth

A barroom bet turned into a 27-year odyssey that has taken one British adventurer across continents, through war zones, and over frozen seas.

Karl Bushby, now 56, stood at the southern tip of Chile in 1998 with just $500 and a seemingly impossible goal: walk 50,000 kilometers back to his hometown of Hull, England.

What started as a challenge to prove his skeptical friends wrong has become one of the most extraordinary feats of human endurance ever attempted.

After nearly three decades of walking, swimming, and surviving against all odds, Bushby is finally approaching the finish line—expected to arrive home by September 2026.

From Paratrooper to Pioneer

Bushby’s background as a British Army paratrooper planted the seeds for his ambitious quest. The military experience didn’t just build his physical stamina—it fundamentally changed how he viewed life itself.

Once you’re in the army and you get to travel and see some of these amazing places, that really inspires and motivates a wanderlust. Paratroopers are all about fitness and endurance and distance, so that all played into it.

Losing several friends during his service made mortality painfully real. This awareness became a driving force behind his decision to attempt something extraordinary.

If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.

  • Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
  • Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
  • Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle

There was an emphasis on the fact that life is short, and you should live it the best you can.

At 29, armed with hand-drawn maps, a calculator, and unwavering determination, Bushby established two unbreakable rules: no motorized transport to advance, and no returning home until arriving on foot.

The Journey Nobody Believed Possible

Bushby initially calculated his walk would take roughly 12 years. He’s now into year 27, having traversed 25 countries across multiple continents.

His route has taken him through some of Earth’s most challenging terrain:

  • Patagonia and the Andes in South America
  • The infamous Darién Gap between Panama and Colombia—one of the world’s most perilous jungle passages
  • The entire length of Central America, Mexico, and the United States
  • Russia, Mongolia, and parts of Asia
  • Recent crossings through Turkey and into Europe

Back in the early days, I don’t think anyone took me seriously.

Survival Mode and Unexpected Support

Starting with minimal funds meant Bushby faced immediate survival challenges. He slept in roadside tents, foraged for food, and relied on the kindness of strangers who occasionally invited him into their homes.

The Americas very quickly became survival mode…this was literally finding food at the side of the road to keep yourself going.

As word spread about his expedition—dubbed the Goliath Expedition—support began materializing. His family contributed financially, donations trickled in, and companies offered sponsorships. By the time Bushby reached Canada in 2003, he secured a book deal.

Yet even with support, obstacles mounted. The 2008 financial crisis saw sponsors withdraw, stalling his progress. Visa restrictions, political barriers, and the COVID-19 pandemic added years to his journey.

One of the lessons from this is the fact that nobody does this alone. I may be the guy alone on the road, but there is a massive network of support that keeps me upright and moving forward.

Crossing Impossible Waters

Two major water crossings defined the most dangerous phases of Bushby’s expedition. The first came in 2006 at the Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia—his route’s midway point.

Winter conditions create a treacherous landscape of crushed ice and seawater rather than solid ground.

It is this massive body of crushed ice and seawater…you’re literally climbing over the ice to make any short distance.

Teaming up with a fellow adventurer in Alaska, Bushby defied expectations and successfully traversed the strait on the first attempt.

No one believed we were going to make it. As it turned out, we managed to nail it on the first go, which no one expected, least of all us.

Russian Detention and Diplomatic Miracles

Success quickly turned to crisis. Upon entering Russia, authorities detained Bushby for 57 days for crossing at an incorrect border point. He faced trial before officials miraculously agreed to let him continue.

The incident haunted him years later. In 2013, Russia banned him from reentry for five years due to the initial violation. Bushby’s response? Walk from Los Angeles to the Russian embassy in Washington, D.C. to petition against the ban.

It worked. The ban was overturned.

Swimming the Caspian Sea

In August 2024, Bushby confronted his second major water obstacle. To circumvent traveling through Iran or Russia, he swam across the Caspian Sea from Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan.

For 31 consecutive days, Bushby swam during daylight hours, sleeping on support boats each night. This extraordinary feat ensured his unbroken route remained intact.

I’ve had to do every inch of this thing by either walking or swimming. Every time I stop, I have to start from that point and continue.

The Physical and Mental Toll

Remarkably, Bushby has suffered only one major injury throughout his 27-year trek—a gashed wrist he stitched himself. He experienced one serious illness, a stomach infection, but recovered thanks to a Peruvian doctor who took him in.

His feet, surprisingly, remain in excellent condition despite walking approximately 24 to 30 kilometers daily for nearly three decades.

They look after themselves pretty much.

The mental challenges prove more difficult. Loneliness weighs heavily, and maintaining relationships has been virtually impossible. Bushby had two significant relationships during his journey, both ending due to his unconventional lifestyle.

We’re not supposed to live like this.

Humanity’s Overwhelming Kindness

Despite walking through deserts, jungles, and war zones, Bushby’s most powerful discovery wasn’t geographical—it was human.

99.99 percent of the people I’ve met have been the very best in humanity. The world is a much kinder, nicer place than it often seems.

Across every culture and country, strangers provided shelter, meals, financial support, and guidance whenever Bushby faced illness or hardship. This consistent generosity fundamentally changed his worldview.

The overwhelming kindness of strangers was a shocker for me.

The Final 1,500 Kilometers

Currently in Hungary, Bushby faces approximately 1,500 kilometers before reaching Hull. European visa restrictions require him to leave every 90 days, so he flies to Mexico to rest before returning to continue his route.

Approaching the finish line brings mixed emotions. For 27 years, his singular purpose has been moving forward—a purpose about to end abruptly.

For the last 27 years of my life, my purpose of living has been getting up and moving forward, and that’s going to stop abruptly. It’s hard to adjust, and that’s obviously going to be the case.

Upon completion, Bushby plans to shift his focus toward science education, passionate about giving back after receiving so much support throughout his journey.

Legacy of an Impossible Dream

Bushby’s expedition proves that extraordinary achievements require more than individual determination—they require community, resilience, and faith in human goodness.

His message to others isn’t necessarily to walk around the world, but to embrace adventure and experience how people truly live beyond headlines and stereotypes.

You need to see how the world really is, and the people who are living in it. It’s one of the best educations you’ll get.

From a barroom bet to a 27-year testament to human endurance and connection, Bushby’s journey stands as proof that impossible goals become possible when you refuse to give up—and when strangers become family along the way.

The world will wrap itself around you and help you achieve things and keep you moving. It’s been absolutely astounding.
