Emily Rolfe isn’t your average CrossFit athlete. While many in the sport dedicate themselves entirely to training, Emily balances the grueling demands of elite-level competition with a full-time career as a medical radiologist.
This dual existence isn’t just a testament to her exceptional time management skills, but also a reflection of her deep-seated passion for both disciplines.
Her journey, marked by unwavering dedication, strategic planning, and an unyielding spirit, offers a compelling look at how one woman shattered the perceived boundaries between professional life and athletic pursuits.

From Gymnastics to Grit
Emily’s athletic journey began long before CrossFit entered the picture. With a background in gymnastics, she possessed the foundational strength and body awareness that would later serve her well in the sport.
However, it was in 2010, while studying Medical Imaging at the University of British Columbia, that she discovered CrossFit and its unique blend of functional movements, high intensity, and constant variation.
“I was instantly hooked,” Emily recalls in an interview with Morning Chalk Up. “The challenge, the community, the constant push to improve – it all resonated with me.”
This newfound passion quickly transformed into a serious commitment. Balancing her studies with increasingly intense training sessions, Emily began competing in local competitions, steadily climbing the ranks and establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with.
The Balancing Act: Work, Life, and WODs
Graduating in 2013, Emily landed a job as a radiologist at Richmond Hospital, a role that demands long hours, precise attention to detail, and the ability to handle high-pressure situations.
Simultaneously, her CrossFit ambitions were soaring. Qualifying for the CrossFit Games in 2014, she placed a respectable 12th, a feat made even more impressive considering her full-time work commitments.
This balancing act, however, was far from effortless. Emily’s days were meticulously structured, with early morning workouts, long shifts at the hospital, and evening training sessions. “It’s definitely a juggling act,” she admits in a video by Talking Elite Fitness. “But I’m incredibly disciplined with my time. I have to be to make it all work.”
This discipline extends beyond just time management. Emily prioritizes sleep, nutrition, and recovery, recognizing their crucial role in both her athletic performance and her ability to function effectively at work. “I can’t afford to burn the candle at both ends,” she explains. “I need to be firing on all cylinders, both in the gym and at the hospital.”
Finding Synergy: Lessons from the Hospital
While some might view her medical career as a hindrance to her athletic aspirations, Emily sees it as a source of strength and perspective. “Working at the hospital keeps me grounded,” she shares in a GORUCK video documenting her journey. “It reminds me that there’s more to life than just CrossFit. It gives me a sense of purpose beyond the competition floor.”
Moreover, her experiences in the medical field have instilled in her a deep appreciation for the human body and its resilience. Witnessing patients overcome adversity and fight for their health has fueled her own determination and mental toughness.
“When I’m in the middle of a grueling workout, I think about the people I’ve seen battling illness and injury,” she reveals. “It puts things in perspective and gives me the extra push to keep going.”
This unique perspective is also evident in her approach to training. Emily prioritizes longevity and sustainability, focusing on proper movement patterns, injury prevention, and listening to her body.
“I want to be able to do this for the long haul,” she emphasizes. “I’m not interested in quick fixes or shortcuts. I want to build a solid foundation that will allow me to compete at a high level for years to come.”
Overcoming Adversity: The Blood Clot and Beyond
Emily’s journey hasn’t been without its setbacks. In 2022, she faced a major hurdle when a blood clot in her arm forced her to withdraw from the CrossFit Games.
The experience, documented in a candid video by Morning Chalk Up, was a stark reminder of the fragility of the human body and the unpredictable nature of life.
Yet, even in the face of adversity, Emily’s resilience shone through. “It was a tough pill to swallow,” she admits. “But I knew I couldn’t let it define me. I had to focus on my recovery and come back stronger.”
And come back stronger she did. After undergoing surgery and months of rehabilitation, Emily returned to competition with renewed vigor, proving that setbacks, while painful, can ultimately serve as catalysts for growth and transformation.

Emily Rolfe’s story is one of dedication, perseverance, and the unwavering pursuit of excellence. She has redefined what it means to be a CrossFit athlete, demonstrating that it’s possible to excel in both the athletic arena and the professional world.
“I want to show people that you don’t have to choose between your passions and your career,” she asserts. “You can have both. It takes hard work, sacrifice, and a lot of planning, but it’s absolutely possible.”
Her journey serves as a powerful inspiration to aspiring athletes, working professionals, and anyone striving to achieve their full potential. Emily Rolfe has proven that with passion, discipline, and a relentless pursuit of goals, the seemingly impossible can become a reality.
