That’s why the slant squat—a deceptively simple movement performed on a tilted platform—is gaining attention from coaches and strength experts.

In one of his recent teachings, popular trainer and “Knees Over Toes Guy” Ben Patrick shared why the slant squat has become a cornerstone of his youth training system—and how it helped him recover from early-career knee surgery and over a decade of pain-free knees.

This method is more than just a squat variation. It’s a full-spectrum joint health and performance system rooted in real-world experience and designed to restore and improve lower-body function without pain.

Why the Slant Squat Is a Game-Changer for Young Athletes

“The number one thing I was lacking was enough knee ability relative to the extreme demands of basketball,” said Patrick, reflecting on his teenage years that led to knee surgery.

The slant squat helps build strength in the quads, knees, and ankles in a way that is both safe and effective.

Because the movement places the knees over the toes on a forward-angled surface, it encourages controlled loading of the knee joint through a full, functional range of motion.

Start With a Pain-Free Foundation

The first step? Get 20 slant board squats done easily and pain-free.

This sets up a solid foundation of tolerance under joint-friendly loading before moving into tougher variations.

“Then progression to single-leg is legit even without weights,” Patrick explained.

But rather than immediately jumping to single-leg squats, Patrick suggests scaling intelligently:

  • Start with two hands assisting (holding onto a bar or support)
  • Reduce to one hand assisting
  • Eventually perform unassisted single-leg slant squats

The Smart Way to Scale Intensity

Progression on the slant squat doesn’t rely solely on added weight.

You can manipulate both reach distance and load position:

  • Lighter weight with farther reach = Easier
  • Heavier weight held close = More difficult

This allows young athletes to safely adjust difficulty based on their strength level and control.

This Isn’t Just an Ankle Mobility Hack

A common misconception is that slant squats are just a workaround for tight ankles. But this is only part of the equation.

Patrick also incorporates exercises that directly build ankle mobility and strength, especially bent-knee calf raises.

“They scale by how far you reach and whether you’re on two legs or one,” he explained. The farther the reach and fewer legs involved, the more challenging the exercise.

Then, a deep split squat lets athletes bring together quad and ankle strength into one smooth, coordinated movement. The lower the split squat goes, the more it tests mobility and strength simultaneously.

Hamstrings and Glutes—The Often Overlooked Half

The slant squat system doesn’t just strengthen the front of the legs.

Patrick emphasizes working the back side—hamstrings and glutes—with precise bodyweight progressions:

  • Hold the heels down using something solid
  • Contract the glutes to modulate difficulty
  • Use hands to push for assistance, then reduce help over time
  • Fight the descent to build eccentric strength, promoting stability

As Patrick puts it, “This is easier, harder, harder, harder—pushing with the hands and then fighting on the way down.”

Flexibility and Strength: Not Mutually Exclusive

Too often, flexibility training is divorced from strength training. Patrick does the opposite.

He emphasizes four-way leg swings or kicks to reinforce mobility, while simultaneously building dynamic hip strength.

This style of flexibility training keeps movement practical and effective, an essential combination for socking away joint health that lasts.

Reverse Engineering Healthy Movement—Literally

One of the most unique aspects of Patrick’s program is where it starts. Instead of building young athletes toward deep squats, he reverses the typical training process.

Youths begin with the simplest and most accessible steps—bodyweight slant squats, ankle mobility, and assisted glutes work.

Then, they earn more advanced moves over time: full split squats, deeper ranges, and even the reverse step up—a potent movement for knee function later in development.

This makes the method ideal for both building athleticism in youth and restoring lost function in adults.

Pain-Free By Design

“You never have to work through pain,” Patrick insists.

His entire system is based on working around painful ranges, while still building strength and ability over time.

That includes using elevation when needed, using support systems during exercises (like hands or bars), and focusing on reps and muscle burn—not pushing through discomfort.

This pain-free philosophy allows for consistency over months and years—building real durability and making deep squats feel enjoyable and accessible, even for those who thought they’d never move that way again.

Knowing Your Load: Understanding Demand vs. Ability

One of the core lessons from Patrick’s experience is understanding that you can’t keep pushing demand without also building ability.

“If I just kept taking that higher—ding ding ding ding—I’d eventually hurt my knees or break my leg,” he said.

It’s not a matter of if, but when. And that’s why every session should balance:

  • Your current physical ability
  • The demands of your sport or life
  • Your access to tools for support

Even in elite athletics, freak factors may exceed what the human body can handle. But for everyday performance and longevity, building ability slowly and intentionally changes the game.

Why Simplicity Wins

Patrick’s tools aren’t flashy. He notes that he’s coaching nearly 100 high school athletes—and that means setups need to be affordable, portable, and repeatable.

One example: a 25° slant board long and wide enough to accommodate a shoe size 11 with hip-width stance and traction tape on top.
