Nearly two decades after the cult-classic romcom John Tucker Must Die hit theaters, Jesse Metcalfe is revisiting the intense physical and emotional toll he faced preparing for the lead role—and confirming a long-awaited sequel may soon become a reality.
At a recent Epic Cons panel alongside co-stars Sophia Bush and Arielle Kebbel, the now 45-year-old actor revealed just how far he went to sculpt the iconic high school heartthrob.
“I wasn’t eating,” Metcalfe admitted. “I was working out three times a day and eating salmon every night.” He wasn’t exaggerating. “Any time I wasn’t on set, I was at the gym.”
The revelations have reignited interest in the film’s behind-the-scenes pressures—and sparked fresh anticipation for what a sequel might bring nearly 20 years later.

A Role That Came With Pressure—and Body Image Struggles
Metcalfe, best known at the time for his breakout role as the shirtless gardener on Desperate Housewives, said he felt immense pressure taking on his first major film lead in the 2006 teen comedy.
“I had a complex about whether I could even pull off the comedy,” he shared during the panel. “Running around in women’s underwear in front of the entire cast and about 40 extras was humbling, to say the least.”
That infamous thong scene, while hilarious on screen, reflected deeper challenges behind the camera. According to Metcalfe and his co-stars, the atmosphere on set could be tough—especially when it came to body image expectations.
“It was rough in terms of body image,” added Bush, with Kebbel nodding in agreement.
The role demanded not only comedic timing and charisma but also an ultra-ripped physique. Metcalfe took it seriously—perhaps too seriously. His regimen included calorie restriction, daily salmon, and intense gym sessions, all while managing the emotional weight of portraying a universally hated (yet oddly lovable) character.

Despite lukewarm critical reviews upon its release, John Tucker Must Die earned nearly $70 million at the global box office and has since developed a loyal fanbase. Now, that fanbase may finally get what it’s been craving.
“There’s a script,” Metcalfe confirmed during the panel. “Apparently it’s amazing.”
Arielle Kebbel, who played one of John Tucker’s scorned exes in the original, offered even more exciting news: “It does involve all of the OG cast.”
That includes Sophia Bush, Ashanti, and possibly even Brittany Snow—who played the shy new girl enlisted to help bring Tucker down.
The sequel may offer more than just a reunion, though. According to Kebbel, the plot could explore whether John Tucker has truly changed.
“The title character may or may not get a chance to change his ways,” she teased. “Which would be very exciting.”
“Do I Get to Wear a Thong Again?”
Unsurprisingly, fans are already speculating whether Metcalfe’s most infamous scene—donning a red thong in an awkward seduction attempt—will return in some form.
“Do I get a chance to wear a thong again?” Metcalfe asked, half-joking during the panel.
Kebbel fired back without missing a beat: “We wanted to talk to you about that. We were thinking you’d actually, like, make your own brand, endorse it. It’d be a whole thing.”
Laughing, Metcalfe responded: “I’m here for it. I can’t wait to unleash this dad bod on the big screen.”

The trio’s appearance at Epic Cons in Chicago wasn’t just about teasing a sequel—it was also a heartfelt reunion. Dressed in John Tucker Must Die sweatshirts featuring the film’s iconic graphics, Metcalfe, Bush, and Kebbel posed for photos and shared behind-the-scenes stories.
“Countdown is on…” Kebbel wrote on social media, tagging the post with #jtmdreunion.
Metcalfe echoed the sentiment: “The John Tucker Must Die (partial) Reunion didn’t disappoint! Such a pleasure reconnecting with these two lovely ladies.”
What Could the Sequel Look Like?
While no official release date or studio announcement has been made, the buzz is undeniably real. If the script moves forward, it has the potential to explore grown-up versions of the characters who once navigated high school heartbreak—and how they’ve evolved (or haven’t).
Will John Tucker face the consequences of his past behavior? Will the women who schemed against him find redemption—or reignite old rivalries?
With a more body-positive, self-aware lens, the sequel could address the toxic masculinity, peer pressure, and unrealistic beauty standards that were subtly present in the original. Now, with its cast older and (hopefully) wiser, there’s room for humor and reflection.
