Lifespan is Increasing—But Healthspan Isn’t
In the last 25 years, North America has added about three years to average lifespan. But the number of healthy, independent years lived—what’s called health-adjusted lifespan—has stayed the same.
“So while we think of every medical advancement,” Hooper explains, “ultimately the only thing we get back to is: how can we improve lifestyle interventions to be able to have people live well forever?”
Hooper, who also works in clinical settings in Canada, makes it clear: exercise is medicine, especially for those with chronic disease, injury, or aging-related decline.
Strength Determines Independence—Not Disease
One of the most startling insights from Hooper’s speech comes from research led by Dr. Fedon, showing that the loss of independence in older adults isn’t primarily due to chronic illness. Instead, it often boils down to just one muscle group—the triceps.
“If you have strong triceps,” Hooper says, “that’s what helps you push out of a chair, that’s what helps you push yourself out of a car, and that’s what helps you live independently.”
For many, the end of independence marks the true decline of life quality. “The day you lose your independence is the day that you die,” he says, describing patients who, despite being alive, have outlived their ability to function on their own.
Muscle: Your Most Metabolically Active Tissue
Hooper highlights a fact that is often overlooked in public health messaging: muscle is not just for strength—it’s an organ of longevity.
Compared to aerobic exercise, resistance training does more to prevent diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and frailty. This is because muscle tissue helps regulate insulin sensitivity, supports metabolic function, and safeguards against inflammatory decline.
“The research around preventing diabetes and preventing heart disease is more about getting stronger… than it actually is about your aerobic capacity,” Hooper notes.
The Best Time to Start is Always Now
Hooper urges people not to wait until their 70s or 80s to think about strength. While it’s never too late to start, the most powerful gains in prevention come from starting young.
For example, bone density peaks in the late teens, and then begins to decline steadily. In women, it drops off rapidly after menopause. That’s why strength training in adolescence isn’t optional—it’s foundational.
“If you have a teenage daughter,” Hooper says, “or you are an undergraduate student, you are a master student—any age is the time to get strong.”
He also addresses one of the most common myths in youth fitness: that lifting weights stunts growth.
“That’s unequivocally no,” he says, directly countering the misconception. “The injury risk of resistance training is less than any other sport.”
Fast-Twitch Muscle: What Aging Steals First
One of the key reasons people fall or lose mobility as they age? The decline of fast-twitch muscle fibers, which are responsible for explosive movements, quick reactions, and stability.
“These are the first to go,” Hooper says, “and they’re the most important when it comes to staying independent and safe.”
Resistance training doesn’t just make muscles bigger—it preserves and enhances neuromuscular function, helping maintain the speed of connection between the brain and body. This is critical in preventing falls, fractures, and other aging-related accidents.
“You’ve all seen an elderly person stumble,” he explains. “Why do they move so slow? That’s the fastest they can move.”
Forget the Complexity—Just Work Hard
As an elite athlete, Hooper understands the science of programming better than most. But his philosophy has simplified over time.
“When you become an expert, you return back to the same principle: if you work relatively hard, you’ll continue making progress,” he says.
Rather than overthinking rest days, rep ranges, and tempos, Hooper believes in a simple formula:
- Train consistently
- Use movement patterns you want to improve
- Work hard, but not to burnout
- Stay injury-free
It’s not magic. It’s just effort, over time.
Strongman Nutrition and the End of Junk-Fueled Strength
In the world of strongman, the stereotype of surviving on pizza, donuts, and YouTube mukbangs is fading.
“The days of thriving in strongman off of pizza and ice cream are probably over,” Hooper says.
While not a strict bodybuilder diet, he follows an 80/20 rule—fueling mostly with quality food but allowing for some flexibility. “I’d rather not eat than eat something horrible,” he jokes.
Interestingly, Hooper also points out that some fat is functional in strongman. “If you’re super lean, you just won’t be strong. Your joints will feel dry, you’ll get injured. It’s also just physics—lifting an atlas stone without a belly is harder.”
Mobility? Load It or Lose It
When it comes to flexibility, Hooper offers a counterintuitive view: stretching without load is nearly useless.
“For me,” he says, “I need 300 to 400 lbs on the bar to actually start feeling like I’m opening my hips.”
Instead of static stretches, he recommends loaded stretching movements like:
- Romanian deadlifts for hamstrings
- Dumbbell flyes for chest flexibility
- Deep squats under load for hip mobility
This approach aligns with the principle of mobility with control. Without strength to stabilize a range of motion, more flexibility can actually increase injury risk.
Strength is Selfish—Until It’s Not
Hooper’s message takes a powerful turn when he talks about why lifting isn’t selfish, even though it takes time and focus.
“That selfish decision to be strong yourself… becomes a very unselfish decision when you’re the person who can support them for 10, 20, 30, 40+ years to come,” he says.
It’s not about ego—it’s about being capable, dependable, and present for the people who matter most.
Hooper openly shares his hope that this message reaches a wide audience, possibly through a future book project. The goal? Inspire people to stop waiting. To start getting strong. To change the trajectory of their lives.
