At 90 years old, Jim Arrington isn’t just staying active—he’s still competing in bodybuilding competitions. Recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest professional bodybuilder, he continues to train multiple times a week at Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach, proving that fitness has no expiration date.

Despite struggling with poor health in childhood, Arrington transformed himself through weightlifting. Now, with over 60 competitions under his belt, he credits his training philosophy, diet changes, and adaptability for his longevity in the sport.

From Weak to Strong: A Lifetime of Transformation

Arrington’s journey wasn’t easy. Born six weeks premature, he weighed just 5.5 pounds at birth. Throughout his childhood, he dealt with asthma and other health issues, leaving him frail and weak.

At age 15, he decided to change his future. Inspired by comic book superheroes, he began weightlifting in 1947 with the goal of building strength. What started as a teenage dream turned into a lifelong passion that would eventually earn him a world record.

Training Smart: The Key to Long-Term Success

Unlike many athletes who slow down with age, Arrington has kept pushing forward by adapting his training to his body’s needs. His workouts focus on efficiency and endurance, with techniques such as:

  • High-rep sets with 10-second holds to maximize muscle fatigue.
  • Three weekly gym sessions, each lasting two hours.
  • Listening to his body, modifying exercises as needed to avoid injury.

His philosophy centers on the idea that what works at one stage of life won’t necessarily work at another. For him, longevity in fitness isn’t about doing the same routine forever—it’s about adjusting and evolving over time.

A Diet Shift: From Traditional to Anti-Inflammatory

In his early years, Arrington followed the classic bodybuilding diet of his time—large amounts of milk and beef. While effective for muscle growth, this approach led to inflammation and discomfort as he aged.

To keep training without pain, he completely overhauled his diet, incorporating more:

  • Olive oil for healthy fats and anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • Mushrooms for their immune-boosting properties.
  • Whole, nutrient-dense foods to support muscle recovery.

By making these adjustments, he found a way to sustain his bodybuilding lifestyle without sacrificing his health.

Competitive Success: A Record-Breaking Career

Arrington’s first bodybuilding competition was decades ago, where he placed second and won the title of “Most Muscular.” Since then, he has:

  • Competed in over 60 contests.
  • Dominated Muscle Beach events for more than 20 years.
  • Earned the title of Guinness World Record Holder at 83 years old.

Even now, he has no plans to retire. Competing has become more than a goal—it’s a source of motivation that fuels his passion for fitness.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Beyond his personal achievements, Arrington takes pride in inspiring others. He frequently hears from younger athletes and gym-goers who say his journey has motivated them to stay active.

“What inspires me is the people that come up and say I inspire them,” he shared in a Guinness World Records interview.

At an age when most people slow down, Arrington continues to prove that discipline, adaptability, and a love for movement can keep the body strong for decades. His story is a powerful reminder that when it comes to fitness, age is just a number.
