Testosterone Just Hit $2.7 Billion. How a Hormone Once Seen as Cheating Became a Longevity Protocol

Testosterone has shed its old skin as simply a bodybuilding steroid and emerged as something entirely different: a longevity tool.

In a recent Men’s Health Strong Talk episode, fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, CSCS, and special guest Layne Norton, PhD, joined Pat Davidson, PhD, to unpack how this hormone went from taboo to mainstream—and what that shift means for men everywhere.

When Men’s Health surveyed nearly 2,200 American men about their relationship with testosterone, the results painted a striking picture of changing attitudes.

Forty percent of guys said their T levels matter more to them now than they did just one year ago, and nearly a quarter currently know someone on testosterone replacement therapy (TRT).

From Taboo to Mainstream Medicine

Samuel, Norton, and Davidson kicked off their conversation by reflecting on their earliest impressions of testosterone—all of which were decidedly negative.

Davidson recalled seeing a 2000 TIME magazine cover featuring an angry, shirtless man alongside warnings about the hormone’s dangers. That image, he explained, shaped public perception for decades.

If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.

  • Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
  • Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
  • Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle

Samuel shared how even his 82-year-old father, who now uses TRT, initially resisted the treatment because he’d internalized the idea that testosterone was “cheating.”

There came a time when it became beneficial to get him on testosterone. It was a little bit of a push-pull because he viewed it as cheating in life.

That perspective—viewing testosterone as an unfair advantage rather than legitimate medical treatment—dominated the cultural conversation for years.

The TRT Boom: Numbers Don’t Lie

Fast-forward to 2026, and testosterone has become impossible to ignore.

No longer stigmatized the way it once was, T is openly discussed across social media platforms and even in government circles. Online clinics have made the hormone more accessible than ever before.

The numbers tell the story: The global TRT market is projected to surge from $2.03 billion in 2024 to $2.7 billion by 2033.

That’s not just growth—it’s a cultural shift playing out in real time.

When Politics Meets Hormones

Testosterone has become so normalized that U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has proposed testing active military members’ T levels.

This move represents how far the conversation has traveled from the weight room to the highest levels of government and public policy.

But normalization comes with complications. As testosterone becomes more commonplace, the discourse around what it can and can’t do has grown increasingly confusing.

Replacement vs. Enhancement: Understanding the Difference

One of the most critical distinctions Samuel, Davidson, and Norton explored was the difference between testosterone as replacement therapy versus as a performance enhancer.

These aren’t interchangeable concepts, even though they’re often conflated in public discussion.

The experts also tackled the relationship between testosterone and masculinity—a connection that’s become both celebrated and weaponized in modern culture.

Key topics they covered included:

  • How social media influencers have shaped T perception
  • The ethics of using TRT in professional sports
  • Why accessibility doesn’t always equal appropriate use
  • What actually qualifies as low testosterone

What This Means for You

Understanding testosterone’s cultural evolution matters because it affects how men approach their health decisions.

When something transitions from fringe treatment to mainstream option, education becomes crucial. Knowing the difference between legitimate medical need and optimization-chasing can prevent costly mistakes—both financially and health-wise.

The full Strong Talk episode dives deeper into these nuances, offering insights that go beyond surface-level takes flooding social feeds.

If you’re curious about testosterone—whether you’re considering TRT yourself, know someone who is, or simply want to understand the changing landscape—this conversation provides context that’s sorely needed.

For Men’s Health’s complete investigation into the state of American testosterone, including data, expert perspectives, and real stories from men navigating these decisions, the full report breaks down everything you need to know.

The testosterone conversation isn’t going anywhere. If anything, it’s only getting louder as more men grapple with questions about hormones, health, and what it means to age well in the modern world.
