Chris Hemsworth has always been known for his impressive physique as Marvel’s God of Thunder, but his transformation for Thor: Love and Thunder pushed him to his limits.
The Australian actor, who has played Thor since 2011, revealed that getting into superhero shape for his latest film was the most challenging physical feat of his career.
“This was particularly hard,” Hemsworth said in Marvel’s behind-the-scenes documentary Assembled. “I think because the target weight we aimed for was quite a ways above where I’d been before.”

A Grueling 12-Month Training Regimen
To achieve Thor’s most muscular look yet, Hemsworth dedicated an entire year to intense training and a highly controlled diet. His routine included weightlifting, martial arts, and swimming, but the biggest challenge was consuming enough food to sustain his growing muscle mass.
“It was train, eat, train, eat. Nothing else to do,” he explained. “Then I turned up for the film bigger than I’ve ever been.”
At the height of his training, Hemsworth reportedly ate 6,000 calories per day, a staggering amount designed to fuel his extreme workouts. However, the process took a toll on his body, making him question whether he would ever undergo such an intense transformation again.
“I don’t know that I want to get that big again,” he admitted. “It was just exhausting.”
‘Bleh, It’s Too Much’: Mixed Reactions to Hemsworth’s Physique
While many fans were in awe of Hemsworth’s sculpted physique, not everyone was impressed. His wife, Elsa Pataky, wasn’t a fan of his bulked-up look, calling it “too much.”
“There are a lot of my male friends who are like, ‘Yeah!’ but a lot of female friends and family are like, ‘Yuck,’” Hemsworth said.
Even Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi was stunned by the actor’s transformation. “He’s huge already, but when I saw his arms, they were twice as big as normal, as wide as my head,” Waititi said.
The ‘Nude Thor’ Scene That Raised the Stakes
Hemsworth’s increased size was put on full display in one of the film’s most talked-about moments—when Thor finds himself completely nude after a wardrobe malfunction caused by Zeus (played by Russell Crowe).
“If I’m going to get my [butt] out for the first time in a Marvel film, I thought it’s going to take some work,” Hemsworth joked. “I started this journey when I took my shirt off in Thor. Ten years later, what do you do? Pants off.”
Future Thor Appearances: A More Balanced Approach?
Although Thor: Love and Thunder set a new benchmark for Hemsworth’s physique, the actor admitted that maintaining such an extreme body type during filming was “horrible.”
“It was one thing to train and eat that much and then sleep all day. Doing this and then a 12-hour set day was something different,” he said. “I won’t do it again. They can give me a fancy muscle-y costume next time. I’m done.”
While the film’s ending hints at Thor’s return in a future Marvel project, Hemsworth seems committed to a more sustainable approach to fitness. “The muscles will fade a bit in any future Thor appearances,” he said.
A Special Moment: Hemsworth’s Daughter Joins the MCU
Beyond the physical challenges, Thor: Love and Thunder also provided Hemsworth with a deeply personal experience—acting alongside his daughter, India. The 10-year-old played a small but meaningful role in the film, and Hemsworth couldn’t be prouder.
“I’m so proud of her,” he said. “My kids are on the set with me, but to have India in the same scene with me was so cool.”
He even shared a nostalgic Instagram post featuring a side-by-side photo of baby India on the first Thor set in 2011 and a more grown-up version on Love and Thunder. In the caption, he called her “my favorite superhero.”
Final Thoughts
Hemsworth’s commitment to embodying Thor has been unmatched, but even he admits that Love and Thunder may have been his peak. As he looks toward future projects, it seems likely that his focus will shift from sheer muscle mass to a more balanced, sustainable approach to fitness.
Would this be his last time going all-in for Thor? Only time will tell—but one thing is clear: Hemsworth’s Love and Thunder transformation was as intense as it gets.
