When a Hyrox world champion squares off against a CrossFit world champion, sparks fly.

In a recent collaboration with Adidas, popular fitness YouTubers the Buttery Bros orchestrated an epic showdown between elite athletes from both disciplines.

The goal? Determine which training methodology produces superior overall athleticism.

Spoiler alert: the results might surprise you.

The Biathlon Challenge Sets the Tone

The competition kicked off with an unexpected test: a mini biathlon featuring skiing and shooting accuracy.

Representing the Hyrox side was Eugenio, sporting what he confidently called a “winner haircut.” CrossFit athlete Yakoski brought recreational skiing experience to the match.

We just ski and pin them quite often cuz we can’t run outside during winter. It’s like -20ยฐ in snow, so I should do my running stuff on skis.

The format was simple yet brutal: one lap of skiing, two rounds of five shots each, and penalty laps for every missed target.

Eugenio dominated the skiing portions with powerful turns and aggressive pacing. But shooting proved challenging for both competitors, with multiple missed targets forcing penalty loops.

Ultimately, Eugenio crossed the finish line first, securing an early victory for Team Hyrox.

Colombian Precision Delivers Shooting Victory

Next up was a pure shooting challenge between CrossFit’s Jorge and Hyrox athlete Sarah from Colombia.

German gold medalist Peter Synindell oversaw the competition, which started with supported shooting and progressively increased difficulty.

Jorge initially looked strong, going five-for-five on his first attempts. Sarah matched his performance shot-for-shot despite never having fired a weapon before.

She went five. She never shot a gun. She went for 10.

When the targets shrunk and difficulty increased, Sarah landed her shot while Jorge missed.

Team Hyrox pulled ahead 2-0.

Football Skills Produce a Rare Tie

At Adidas headquarters, the competition shifted to soccer with a goalkeeping challenge.

Byron from Colombia faced Brazil’s Kaiik in blocking machine-fired balls followed by traditional penalty kicks.

Both athletes went five-for-five blocking the automated shots, using their entire bodies to stop the ball. Byron then scored two out of five penalty kicks. Kaiik matched with two successful kicks of his own.

The result? A draw. Both teams earned a point, keeping Hyrox comfortably ahead.

Reflex Test Exposes Weaknesses

The reflex challenge featured falling sticks that athletes had to catch before hitting the ground.

CrossFit’s Ella Wilkinson went first, managing to catch just two sticks. Hyrox athlete Danell tied on her first attempt.

Rather than accepting the tie, organizers demanded a rematch. Ella improved slightly but couldn’t match Danell’s second-round performance.

Another point for Team Hyrox, extending their lead to 4-1.

Behind the Scenes: Adidas Unveils New Hybrid Shoe

The gathering wasn’t just about competition. Athletes assembled for the annual Adidas Primer, where the sportswear giant showcased its latest innovation: the Audi Zero Drop Set Elite.

This shoe represents Adidas’s first ground-up design specifically for hybrid training.

Athletes tested the footwear through wall ball exercises on force plates while motion-capture cameras analyzed their movement patterns. The shoe features a high heel-to-toe drop designed to promote more upright positioning during exercises like wall balls.

Testing revealed impressive performance, with athletes reporting enhanced stability for both running and ballistic movements.

The Hybrid Sprint Finale

Everything built toward the climactic hybrid sprint event, featuring some serious firepower from both camps.

For CrossFit: James Spragg (World Fitness Project champion) partnered with 19-year-old Ty Jenkins. Laura Horvath and Sydney Wells represented the women’s division.

For Hyrox: World champion Tim Vish teamed with Palio, while Danell and Elena competed in the women’s category.

Men’s Race: CrossFit Dominance

James Spragg exploded from the start, building a commanding lead through the running and sled portions.

I know that I just have to really really break the chain per se at the station. So that was the only way I was going to win. So I tried to do that at the very first one and then leave them no chance.

Tim Vish mounted a comeback attempt but couldn’t close the gap. Spragg maintained composure through the final 50 wall balls, securing victory and putting CrossFit on the board.

Understanding the Performance Gap

The outcome highlights fundamental differences between training methodologies.

CrossFit athletes excel in short-duration, high-intensity efforts lasting under nine minutes. Their training emphasizes Vฬ‡Oโ‚‚ max development and fatigue tolerance in brief windows.

Hyrox competitors, conversely, optimize for events approaching one hour. They develop superior fatigue-clearing capacity over extended periods.

In this specific sprint formatโ€”a middle ground between both disciplinesโ€”the shorter time domain favored CrossFit’s metabolic conditioning.

The Verdict and Future Showdowns

Despite CrossFit’s sprint victory, Hyrox athletes dominated the overall competition.

The final tally showed clear Hyrox superiority across diverse athletic challengesโ€”from precision sports to reflexes to soccer skills.

However, organizers acknowledged limitations. The sample size remained small, and events skewed toward unfamiliar territory for both groups.

I would love to with you guys create a good workout who also crossfitters are happy. Also, Hierrox athletes are happy. Maybe we got this 3 weeks before something like that. everyone can prepare there probably that everyone can taper of that no one has any complaints or something and then let’s go for it.

Plans are already forming for expanded competitions featuring larger athlete pools and more balanced event selection.

What This Means for Your Training

This showdown illuminates an important truth: specialization matters, but well-rounded athleticism transcends any single discipline.

If your goals involve general fitness and life performance, incorporating elements from both methodologies offers optimal results:

  • Short, intense intervals (CrossFit-style) build maximum power output and metabolic flexibility
  • Sustained aerobic efforts (Hyrox-style) develop endurance and recovery capacity
  • Skill variety creates neurological adaptations that transfer across sports
  • Strength fundamentals underpin performance in virtually every athletic endeavor

Neither training style produces universally “better” athletes. Context determines superiority.

The real winner? Anyone willing to step outside their comfort zone, test themselves against unfamiliar challenges, and learn from athletes with different specializations.

That competitive spiritโ€”combined with mutual respect between communitiesโ€”elevates everyone’s performance and pushes the boundaries of human potential.
