The Skull Crusher Mistake Everyone Makes

Think skull crushers put your triceps in that crucial overhead stretch position? Think again.

When you aim the bar toward your forehead, your arms remain in front of your body—similar to a standard push down. You’re not achieving true shoulder flexion.

What I want to do and what you need to do is get those arms back behind your head. So now with your shoulders in flexion with the bending of the elbows, I get a lot more tension directed right at that area that we’re trying to fill in that gap.

The fix is simple but game-changing: angle your arms backward over your head rather than straight up. Keep that angle locked throughout the movement—only the elbow joint should move.

This single adjustment transforms an ineffective exercise into a long head builder.

Tricep Push Aways: Stop Going Too Low

Cable push aways offer excellent overhead positioning, but most people butcher the execution by extending the rope too low and parallel to the floor.

When your forearm finishes parallel to the rope, tension on the tricep disappears. You need perpendicularity—a 90-degree angle between rope and forearm.

The Step-Through Solution

Cavaliere recommends a modified version called the step-through push away that solves two problems: proper arm positioning and insufficient loading.

  • Step away from the cable stack to disengage weight
  • Use your back leg to step through while simultaneously pushing
  • Drive weight forward and up, finishing with arms high
  • Allow elbows to drift upward on the return for enhanced stretch

You’re using some momentum and now I got to control the eccentric and that good stretch on the way back. But again, we’re finishing with a more perpendicular positioning of the rope to my forearm.

This controlled “cheat” allows heavier loads while maintaining optimal mechanics—similar to cheat curls for biceps.

Overhead Extensions: Bench Angle Changes Everything

Dumbbell overhead extensions (power bombs) are staples for good reason. They place triceps in that critical stretched position.

But here’s what kills results: elbows flaring out to the sides. Whether from shoulder immobility or discomfort, wide elbows drastically reduce elbow range of motion and tricep tension.

The biomechanical fix doesn’t require months of mobility work. Just change your bench angle.

Incline Bench Setup

Performing overhead extensions on an incline bench automatically corrects elbow positioning without forcing uncomfortable shoulder flexion.

Your arms sit slightly forward relative to your torso, requiring less extreme shoulder mobility. Elbows naturally stay tight to your head instead of drifting outward.

They’re basically like this as opposed to having to be back here like that. And that little bit of flexion difference is the difference between being able to do this properly with the elbows forward or not with the elbows drifting.

Drop the dumbbell behind your head, maintain tight elbows, and extend slightly backward at the top. Gains without pain.

Don’t Skip Shortened Position Work

Stretched position exercises dominate modern training advice, but fully shortened positions remain crucial for complete tricep development.

Enter the Wolverine pull down—a hybrid movement that leverages the tricep’s dual function as both elbow extender and shoulder extensor.

Getting your arm into shoulder extension behind your body hammers the long head in its most shortened state.

Kickbacks Redeemed: The Incline Version

Tricep kickbacks get ridiculed constantly, and standard execution deserves criticism. Lower back fatigue causes posture breakdown, elbows drop progressively lower, and you end up extending against zero resistance.

But the movement pattern itself is valuable when performed correctly.

Face-Down Incline Kickbacks

  • Let dumbbells hang straight down beneath you
  • Drag elbows close to sides and back to waistline
  • Extend dumbbells as far backward as possible
  • Return and repeat drag motion each rep

Even light weights produce brutal contractions because you’re finally hitting proper positioning consistently—no degradation as fatigue sets in.

Programming Both Positions

Complete tricep development requires both stretched and shortened position exercises. Emphasizing only one leaves significant growth potential untapped.
