One of the most dominant streaks in modern track and field history came to a stunning end on the Fourth of July — and the person who broke it didn’t just win a race.
Nikki Hiltz outkicked three-time Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon in the final 100 meters of the women’s mile at the Prefontaine Classic, snapping a five-year unbeaten run that many believed would never be stopped.
The win was electric on its own — but what made it unforgettable was everything it meant beyond the finish line.
Here’s how one of the most remarkable moments in recent athletics history unfolded at Hayward Field.

The Moment Five Years of Dominance Ended
Faith Kipyegon had not lost a race at the mile or 1,500 meters since 2020. Saturday, July 4th, in front of 12,452 fans packed into Hayward Field’s stands, that changed.
Hiltz crossed the line in 4 minutes, 17.49 seconds — the fastest women’s mile run anywhere in the world this season. Dorcus Ewoi of Kenya came in second with a personal-best 4:17.62, and Kipyegon finished third in 4:17.80.
If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.
- Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
- Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
- Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle
The race played out differently than most Kipyegon performances. Rather than surging to the front and grinding the field into submission before the final lap, she stayed tucked in and let the race become tactical.
That decision kept the door open — and Hiltz walked right through it.
Shoulder to Shoulder With a Legend
Rounding the final turn, Hiltz found themselves running stride for stride with the greatest female middle-distance runner of this generation. Most athletes would have been overwhelmed by that moment. Hiltz was energized by it.
I was like, ‘I think this might be the only time in my entire career that for the last 100 meters we can just go head to head.’ And I just got excited.
That excitement translated into a finishing kick that Kipyegon — who almost always has the fastest final straight in any field — simply couldn’t match.
Faith is so incredible and she’s someone we obviously all look up to. I’ve always thought it would be so cool to see if I could outkick her over the last 100, but she’s always so far ahead. It was cool to come out on top. It was really fun.
Kipyegon, for her part, was measured. “The race was good,” she said. “This is sports and we accept the outcome. Nobody knows behind the scenes of everything.”
A Record Book That Got Completely Rewritten
The women’s mile hadn’t been run at the Prefontaine Classic since 1993. The old Hayward Field record — a 4:21.25 set by the legendary Mary Decker Slaney — had stood untouched for 38 years.

Saturday’s field demolished it. Eight of the 14 runners finished under that mark.
Poland’s Klaudia Kazimierska took fourth in 4:17.90, a national record that also smashed her previous personal best by nearly 15 seconds. Australia’s Jessica Hull, a former Oregon Duck competing on familiar turf, rounded out the top five in 4:18.03.
I know I can compete with anybody in the world now.
Kazimierska’s reaction said everything about the caliber of this race. When a 15-second personal best only gets you fourth place, you know something historic just happened.
Win Over the Record — The Choice That Defined the Day
Hiltz had considered targeting the American record heading into the race. Their coach put it plainly: which matters more, the record or the win?
They chose the win. And with the Pre Classic as the summer’s primary target — no European Championships or Commonwealth Games on the schedule — the timing was everything.
I’m American. This is my big one.
A Victory That Carried Far More Than a Trophy
Hiltz, who identifies as non-binary and transgender and uses they/them pronouns, crossed that finish line just days after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld laws in West Virginia and Idaho banning transgender girls and women from competing on women’s teams. Twenty-seven states have similar legislation on the books.

The timing wasn’t lost on anyone — least of all Hiltz.
I wasn’t surprised, but I was obviously still disappointed. For me, I want to show that trans people can be in sport, be affirmed in their gender. We’re not these big, scary things.
Hiltz has been candid about navigating public misunderstanding from multiple directions — a complicated position that few athletes ever have to manage.
I get it from both sides. People think I’m a trans man that’s taking testosterone, and I’m like, ‘No, I’m not doing that.’ Then they think I’m a biological man competing in women’s sports. And I’m like, ‘No, I’m not a trans woman either.’ Honestly, a lot of people can’t really even insult me correctly.
The Journey That Led to This Moment
Hiltz came out publicly in 2021 and shared their top-surgery journey earlier this year. On the track, the results have continued building — a seventh-place finish in the 1,500 at the Paris Olympics, fifth at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, and a Wanamaker Mile victory at the Millrose Games to open 2026.
Next on the schedule is the USATF national championships at Icahn Stadium later this month, with the specific event still to be announced.
If Saturday was any indication of where Hiltz’s form is heading, whoever lines up against them should be paying very close attention.
Every lap I just felt better and better. It’s rare when those days happen, so I’m glad that when I felt good, I could capitalize on it.
On a day built for fireworks, Nikki Hiltz delivered the biggest one of all.
