There are five drinks that can be made in about two minutes tomorrow morning that might change whether the body spends the next hour storing belly fat or burning it.
Not subcutaneous belly fat—visceral fat, the deep fat wrapping around organs and pushing the stomach out from the inside.
Medical doctor and health expert Dr. Mike recently broke down what he calls “the five flatline method,” and the science behind it is surprisingly solid.
But here’s the truth: no drink will melt belly fat—and anyone promising that is lying.

The Real Mechanism: Flatten the Spike, Stop the Storage
Dr. Mike explains that what these drinks actually do is flatten blood sugar spikes, which tells the body to stop storing visceral fat in the first place.
Essentially, if you get a high spike, your body stores fat. Calm morning, your body burns. That’s the whole game.
When blood sugar spikes, the body releases insulin—and insulin is the signal to store visceral fat. Every spike quietly adds to the problem.
If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.
- Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
- Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
- Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle
But flattening that spike does something even more important: it unlocks fat burning. While insulin is high, the body physically cannot burn fat efficiently. Insulin is the gatekeeper, and as long as it’s elevated, fat burning stays locked.
These five drinks attack the problem from two angles at once: they stop accumulating new visceral fat and free the body to burn what’s already there.
Drink #1: Psyllium Husk—The Gel That Changes Everything
Dr. Mike set up an experiment using two funnels representing the esophagus, a mason jar representing the stomach, and regular Coke—about nine teaspoons of sugar in a can.
In version one, Coke poured straight through with no barrier. All that sugar hit the bloodstream at once—the spike that signals fat storage.
In version two, psyllium gel sat in the funnel first. The Coke still got through, but slowly—arriving in a controlled drip instead of all at once.
Now, the Coke is just arriving slowly instead of all at once. And that right there is the whole point of the video.
Nothing gets removed. Nothing gets flushed away. The sugar just arrives gradually, which keeps insulin calm.

- Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
- Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
- Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle
A 2023 meta-analysis pulled together 19 randomized controlled trials with over 4,000 people and found that psyllium significantly lowered fasting blood sugar and improved insulin resistance.
In another placebo-controlled trial, just 6 grams daily measurably shifted fat storage away from the belly—the exact fat being targeted—from fiber, not medication.
How to Make It
- Mix one teaspoon (about 5 grams) psyllium husk in at least 12 ounces (350 ml) water
- Stir gently and drink immediately—it gels fast
- Follow with more water
- Drink 10-15 minutes before eating, not with food
Timing matters. The gel needs to be sitting in the stomach before breakfast arrives, just like in the funnel demonstration.
Important: If new to fiber, start with one teaspoon for the first week. Early bloating is normal. Anyone with inflammatory gut conditions like IBS or Crohn’s should check with their doctor first.
Drink #2: Chia Seeds—Nutrition With the Spike Control
Chia works on the same principle. It’s soluble fiber that forms a gel—same mechanism, same slow drip effect.
Add water to chia seeds, wait 20 minutes, and it becomes pudding. That gel slows glucose absorption just like psyllium.
Research shows chia reduces blood sugar spikes from meals by 22 to 30%—roughly a quarter of the spike gone.
But chia brings two things psyllium doesn’t: protein and omega-3 fats. It flattens the spike and delivers real nutrition in the same glass.
Dr. Mike notes that chia is also a huge appetite killer, though he cautions the research on that front is softer and shouldn’t be oversold.
How to Make It
- One tablespoon (about 12 grams) chia seeds
- 8-10 ounces (300 ml) water
- Stir for 30 seconds, let sit 5 minutes, stir again
- Optional: squeeze lemon for flavor
Same rule applies: if new to fiber, start with one teaspoon.
Drink #3: Matcha—The Strongest Evidence for Visceral Fat
Matcha is green tea, but instead of steeping leaves and discarding them, the whole leaf is ground into powder and consumed—making it far more active.
The active compound is a catechin called EGCG, and the research on visceral fat specifically is compelling.
In a 12-week randomized controlled trial, adults carrying significant visceral fat drank a catechin-rich drink. Researchers measured a drop in visceral fat—the fat around organs—while the control group saw nothing.
Measured organ fat result from the tea was measured. That’s crazy that you saw fat drop from just drinking this one drink.
Dr. Mike is transparent: not every trial agrees, and those showing results used high doses of catechins—more than a weak cup provides. That’s why matcha works better than regular green tea: concentrated, powdered, whole-leaf consumption delivers meaningful doses.
Matcha also contains L-theanine, which provides caffeine’s energy without jitters or crashes. That matters because crashes and stress drive cravings that pile on visceral fat.
How to Make It
- Let boiled water cool for 1-2 minutes (around 175°F or 80°C)
- Whisk matcha into a paste first, then top up with water
- Do not add sugar—sugar creates the spike this drink is meant to prevent
Boiling water makes matcha bitter and damages the compounds being consumed for.
Drink #4: Apple Cider Vinegar—The Glucose Blunter
Dr. Mike admits he was skeptical about apple cider vinegar until reading the research. The glucose data is undeniable.
Vinegar significantly blunts both blood sugar and insulin response to meals—the two exact targets of this entire method.
The active compound is acetic acid, which gives vinegar its sharpness. Acetic acid slows stomach emptying, helps muscles take up glucose, and activates an enzyme called AMPK.
Think of AMPK as your body’s low fuel warning light. And when it switches on, the message is stop storing and start burning.
One honest take: vinegar’s real benefit is lowering meal spikes, not permanently curing insulin resistance. It’s a spike control tool—but done every morning, that control adds up.
How to Use It Safely
Warning: Apple cider vinegar is acidic. Never drink it undiluted—it can damage tooth enamel and irritate the throat.
- One tablespoon apple cider vinegar (the cloudy kind)
- Large glass of water (at least 250 ml)
- Drink through a straw to protect teeth
- Don’t brush teeth immediately after
Anyone with acid reflux or stomach ulcers should skip this one. Four other options remain.
Drink #5: Black Coffee—The Chlorogenic Acid Powerhouse
Coffee surprises people on a fat loss list. Most assume caffeine is the star, but for visceral fat, chlorogenic acid is the main story.
Coffee is one of the richest sources of chlorogenic acid on the planet, and the evidence is strong.
In a controlled trial of 150 overweight adults, one group drank coffee high in chlorogenic acid while another drank coffee low in it. Same coffee otherwise.
After 12 weeks, the high chlorogenic acid group had significantly less visceral fat, smaller waist circumference, and lower body weight. Same drink—only difference was chlorogenic acid content.
Chlorogenic acid does two things:
- Slows glucose absorption in the gut, flattening spikes
- Activates AMPK pathway, nudging the body toward burning fat instead of storing it
Coffee belongs here for the exact same reason as the other four: spike control.
How to Drink It
Black coffee only. Adding sugar or sweet syrup creates the exact spike coffee is meant to prevent.
- Splash of milk is fine
- Wait 30-60 minutes after waking to drink it (cortisol is already high upon waking)
- Decaf works too—it still contains chlorogenic acid
How to Stack Them Into a Real Morning Routine
Nobody’s drinking five drinks before work. The method is three simple moves, not five separate drinks.
Move One: Upon waking, drink plain water. Just rehydrate.
Move Two: Before breakfast or the first meal, choose a spike flattener—psyllium or chia in water. Drink it 10-15 minutes before eating so the gel is formed and waiting when food enters, just like the funnel demonstration.
Move Three: With breakfast, enjoy a warm drink—matcha or black coffee. If using apple cider vinegar, take it alongside the first meal, not on an empty stomach.
That’s it. Water, fiber gel before food, warm drink with food. Three moves, not five drinks.
The Two-Angle Strategy That Makes This Work
None of these drinks are magic bullets. Dr. Mike emphasized that from the start.
What they do is help hit both angles at once: stop accumulating new visceral fat by flattening spikes, and by keeping insulin low and flat, free the body to burn what’s already there.

The candle will burn from both ends. And if you do that every morning, this will add up quickly, quietly, and steadily, and exactly in the direction that you want.
This is the five flatline method—and anyone can start tomorrow without buying anything exotic.
