Popular fitness YouTuber Jeff Cavaliere recently tackled one of the internet’s most persistent workout trends: the 100 push-ups per day challenge.
His message wasn’t to discourage the practice entirely, but to explain why it fails for most peopleโand how to fix it.
Cavaliere, known for his evidence-based approach, breaks down the science behind push-up programming and reveals why chasing arbitrary rep counts might be sabotaging your chest gains.
Whether you’re a beginner or experienced lifter, understanding these principles could transform how you approach bodyweight training.

The Strength Problem Nobody Talks About
Most people start the 100 push-ups challenge hoping to build a bigger, stronger chest. But there’s a fundamental issue with using push-ups for strength development.
During a standard push-up, you’re lifting approximately 65-75% of your body weight. For a 160-pound person, that translates to roughly 120 pounds of resistance.
Is there a world where a 120 lb bench presser would be considered strong? I mean, you might start out, we all start out somewhere. I started out with the bar and then 65 pounds, right?
The comparison becomes even more revealing when you consider rep ranges. Would doing 120 pounds on the bench press for 20, 40, or 50 reps make you stronger?
I would say at that point you should just increase the weight.
This highlights the core problem: you’re capping out your strength potential by never increasing the load. You might develop better strength endurance, but maximal strength gains require progressive overloadโsomething a standard push-up can’t provide once you’ve adapted.
The Hypertrophy Trap
Even if strength isn’t your primary goal, the 100 push-ups approach creates problems for muscle growth as well.
When performing 100 daily push-ups, you’re typically breaking them into sets. This creates two possible scenariosโboth problematic.
Training to Failure Daily Doesn’t Work
If you’re taking each set to complete failure, you’re setting yourself up for disaster.
There’s no world where the natural lifter who’s trying to build muscle should subject a muscle to multiple bouts of failure every single day consecutively without rest.
Muscle growth occurs during recovery, not during the workout itself. Constant failure without adequate rest prevents your body from adapting and growing stronger.
Eventually, you’ll exceed your recovery capacity, making it impossible to come back bigger from each session. You’re simply accumulating junk volume.
Stopping Short of Failure Has Its Own Problems
The alternativeโperforming submaximal setsโseems safer but creates different issues tied to energy systems and rep ranges.
Cavaliere explains that different energy systems fuel different types of effort:
- ATP-Phosphocreatine System: Powers high-effort, low-rep sets (1-5 reps). This is where creatine supplementation helps.
- Glycolytic System: Fuels the hypertrophy sweet spot (8-17 reps), where muscle growth occurs most effectively.
- Oxidative System: Takes over beyond 30+ reps, shifting toward muscle endurance rather than growth.
Here’s the crucial insight: the higher your reps climb, the more important it becomes to actually reach failure for muscle growth.
In lower rep ranges for strength, staying submaximal works well. But once you’re doing 20, 25, or 30 reps per set, failing to reach actual failure means those sets provide virtually no stimulus for hypertrophy.
The Adaptation Curve
Push-ups become easier remarkably fast. Your nervous system adapts quickly, making you more efficient at the movement pattern.
Someone who can only manage seven push-ups initially might hit ten the following week, then fourteen shortly after. This rapid progression sounds positive, but it actually negates the exercise’s effectiveness for muscle growth.
Once you’re easily cranking out 25+ reps, you’ve moved beyond the optimal hypertrophy zone. Without reaching failure in these high-rep sets, you’re not creating enough stimulus for growth.
But if you do start training to failure at these rep ranges every day, you’re back to the recovery problem mentioned earlier.
Better Approaches That Actually Work
The solution isn’t abandoning push-ups entirelyโit’s making them harder to keep the stimulus in an effective rep range.
Add External Load
For that 160-pound person who bench presses 225 pounds, adding 100 pounds to their back during push-ups creates a similar tension to their bench press.
Remember, your body’s not sitting there going, ‘Oh, I prefer I know what weights feel like and then my body weight is different.’ No, your body just understands the tension it’s applying to you.
This equates the mechanical load and provides genuine progressive overload.
Progress to Harder Variations
If you don’t have access to weights, numerous push-up variations can increase difficulty:
- Feet-elevated push-ups: Shifts more weight toward your upper body
- Archer push-ups: Wider hand placement requiring lateral movement through space
- Band-resisted push-ups: Cross a band over your back for added resistance and chest activation
- Deficit push-ups: Using handles or blocks to increase range of motion
The goal is finding a variation that causes failure in the 8-15 rep range. Even staying slightly submaximal at this intensity provides effective volume for growth.
Change the Tempo
The simplest modification requires no equipment whatsoever: slow down and focus on quality.
Stop counting the reps that you’re doing and make those reps count.
Cavaliere recommends this protocol:
- Lower slowly all the way to the ground
- Release your hands briefly to ensure full depth
- Press back into the ground
- While pushing up, actively squeeze your hands toward each other, engaging your chest maximally
This approach typically cuts someone’s max reps in half immediately. A 40-rep performer suddenly struggles with 20. That’s exactly the point.
The increased time under tension and intentional muscle engagement dramatically increases intensity without changing the exercise variation.
The Extreme Volume Exception
Cavaliere acknowledges one scenario where extremely high daily push-up volume can work: the “Herschel Walker approach.”
With truly excessive but submaximal volume, the body eventually responds by becoming more resilientโalmost creating a protective adaptation out of necessity.
It basically says you’re an idiot. You keep doing the same damn thing to me every day. I have to do something out of desperation at this point to sort of maintain some level or wall of resistance up against what you’re doing to me.
Walker famously performed 1,500 push-ups daily through college. When first tested on bench press, he lifted 345 pounds for 25 repsโhaving never trained the movement.
However, Cavaliere emphasizes that Walker represents a genetic outlierโone of the greatest athletes ever at his position. For typical lifters, this approach remains impractical and unsustainable.
The Joint Health Consideration
Beyond immediate training effects, Cavaliere raises an important long-term concern: joint longevity.
Using a tire analogy, he notes that car tires last 40,000-60,000 miles. With typical annual mileage of 10,000-15,000 miles, that provides 4-6 years of use.
Human joints have similar limitsโa finite number of repetitions before wear accumulates. Unlike tires, our bodies can regenerate, but maximizing stimulus while minimizing unnecessary volume preserves joint health long-term.
The goal should be training effectively into your 80s and 90s without joint replacements, not accumulating junk volume that accelerates wear without proportional benefit.
The Bottom Line
The 100 push-ups per day challenge isn’t inherently terribleโit just has a very limited window of effectiveness.
For complete beginners, it might provide a few weeks of stimulus. For anyone with training experience, the benefits arrive even fasterโand disappear just as quickly.
The real problem is the arbitrary number. Focusing on hitting 100 reps encourages poor quality, inadequate intensity, and suboptimal programming.
Instead of counting reps, make your reps count through:
- Progressive variations that challenge you in the 8-15 rep range
- External loading when possible
- Deliberate tempo and intentional muscle engagement
- Adequate recovery between training sessions
For genuine strength development, eventually incorporating barbells or dumbbells becomes necessary to provide sufficient overload.
Push-ups remain a valuable exercise with numerous applications. But like any tool, they work best when applied intelligently, with clear understanding of what they can and cannot accomplish.
