Jean-Claude Van Damme wants a piece of Jake Paul, and he’s not being subtle about it.
The aging action star, now 64, issued a bizarrely earnest challenge to the celebrity boxer last week, proposing a modified kickboxing-versus-boxing matchup for late 2026.
What started as a seemingly genuine callout quickly devolved into one of the strangest fight proposals in recent memory—complete with backhanded compliments, charity pledges, and a promise not to “break your knee.”
UFC flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko has already jumped on board, calling Van Damme “The Legend” and predicting he’ll “smoke baby Jake Paul.”

Van Damme Lays Out His Terms
In a social media video that quickly went viral, Van Damme addressed Paul directly with a mix of flattery and fighting words.
Hi Jake, this is JCVD, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bloodsport. Let’s do a fight, a real fight, of course. I promise you, I will not kick below the belt, which means no low kick, so I don’t break your knee, I don’t break your ankle.
Van Damme proposed removing low kicks, elbows, and potentially other traditional kickboxing techniques to level the playing field. He referenced Paul’s recent devastating loss to Anthony Joshua, praising the YouTuber-turned-boxer for his courage despite the outcome.
If you want something simple that actually works, this is one of the most effective tools I’ve used to build strength, conditioning, and endurance without needing a full gym setup.
- Full-body training with one weight using swings, squats, and presses
- Solid cast iron build that feels stable and lasts for years
- Comfortable grip that makes high-rep workouts easier to handle
You’ve done a good fight with ‘AJ,’ people make fun, but you were very courageous.
Paul suffered a broken jaw in that fight, marking one of his most brutal defeats to date.
Location, Location, Location
Van Damme isn’t picky about where this hypothetical showdown would take place. He rattled off a laundry list of exotic locations, seemingly appealing to Paul’s taste for spectacle and big-money events.
It can be done in Macau, in Las Vegas, it can be in Middle East, Paris, the UK. I like Macau or Dubai or Abu Dhabi, whatever. Saudi Arabia. You choose the place.
Many of these venues—particularly Saudi Arabia and Dubai—have become hotspots for celebrity boxing matches and crossover combat sports events in recent years.
The Charity Angle (Sort Of)
In what appeared to be an attempt at legitimacy, Van Damme pledged to donate 15 percent of his profits to charity. He encouraged Paul to do the same but left it as optional.
I’ll give 15 percent of my profit to charity. You can do the same. If not, your decision.
Fifteen percent isn’t exactly a groundbreaking charitable commitment, especially for what would likely be a multi-million dollar payday if it ever happened.
“You Are Handsome. You Are Beautiful.”
Perhaps the most memorable part of Van Damme’s challenge was his strangely affectionate tone toward Paul, mixed with self-deprecating humor about his own lifestyle.

You are handsome. You are beautiful, I don’t drive a Ferrari, I don’t use my spray perfume. I am a normal guy who just want to kick your ass. Simple like that.
Van Damme positioned himself as an everyman taking on Hollywood glamour, despite being a global action movie icon himself. The juxtaposition was intentional—and odd.
UFC Champ Joins The Hype Train
Valentina Shevchenko didn’t waste time throwing her support behind Van Damme. The UFC flyweight champion took to X (formerly Twitter) with a bold proclamation.
The Legend and Father of Western World Thai Boxing, Jean Claude Van Damme, will smoke baby Jake Paul and seek revenge for everyone! The old school truly represents the real deal!
Shevchenko’s reference to “revenge” is puzzling. Van Damme and Paul have no documented beef, making the revenge narrative purely symbolic—perhaps representing older generations of martial artists versus modern celebrity culture.
The Age Factor
Van Damme is 64 years old. Paul is 28.
That 36-year age gap makes this fight proposal more spectacle than serious competition. While Van Damme trained extensively in karate and kickboxing during his prime, he’s decades past peak athletic performance.
Paul, despite recent losses, remains an active boxer with youth, size, and training on his side. Even with modified rules favoring Van Damme’s kickboxing background, the age difference creates a massive disadvantage.

Will Paul Respond?
So far, Jake Paul has remained silent on Van Damme’s challenge. Given Paul’s history of accepting unusual matchups and leveraging social media controversy, silence might be the smartest play.
Fighting a senior citizen—even a legendary one—carries significant downside risk. Win, and Paul gets accused of beating up an old man. Lose, and his credibility takes a catastrophic hit.
Van Damme insisted he wouldn’t stop until Paul says yes, but the reality is this fight probably won’t happen. It exists in that strange limbo between genuine challenge and publicity stunt—entertaining to discuss but unlikely to materialize.
Still, stranger things have happened in celebrity boxing. And if nothing else, Van Damme succeeded in reminding everyone that he’s still around, still confident, and still willing to talk trash to guys young enough to be his grandson.
