Eventually, Harris decided to use it up—not on a person, but on a racehorse. He dissolved 10 grams in water, loaded it into a syringe, and it clogged.

Second: training capacity. More phosphocreatine means faster energy system recovery. You can lift heavier and complete more quality reps. Over weeks and months, that extra volume adds up.

The Gender Gap in Response

Men and women respond differently—or at least that’s what literature suggests.

Some groups respond more than others.

  • Vegans and vegetarians: They eat essentially no dietary creatine, so baseline muscle stores sit lower. When they supplement, they get a larger jump in muscle phosphocreatine and cognitive performance.

Myth #2: Creatine Causes Hair Loss

One study in rugby players found DHT (dihydrotestosterone) rose 56% after a 7-day loading phase at 25 grams daily. That fueled fears about hair loss.

No study has directly linked creatine to hair loss. That DHT finding has never been replicated.

What does not show up in controlled trials? Liver damage, dehydration, cancer, or rhabdomyolysis.

Real Contraindications (Check With Your Physician)

  • Pre-existing kidney disease: If you have reduced kidney function, diabetes, or hypertension, get kidney function tests checked first.

A salmon fillet at breakfast, a steak at lunch, herring, chicken at dinner. So, you sit down to roughly 24 oz of cooked meat and fish across three meals. That’s a lot.

If you choose to take creatine monohydrate, here’s the unglamorous, evidence-backed approach:

  • Use creatine monohydrate. The overwhelming majority of evidence was built on boring old monohydrate. Buffered and “advanced” forms aren’t solving a problem monohydrate has.
  • Take 3 to 5 grams daily. This saturates muscle stores. Larger bodies sit at the top range. Training days and rest days alike—it doesn’t matter.
  • Skip the loading phase. It reaches the same saturation, just faster. You don’t need to cycle on and off. Timing barely matters.
  • Remember what it is: a multiplier on a training plan, not a replacement. You still have to lift, eat adequate protein and calories. The powder does not define effort.

Creatine doesn’t build muscle on its own. What it does is raise the ceiling on work you can perform.
