โI see people doing squats and deadlifts with their stomachs sucked all the way in. Thatโs not how your body should behave under a heavy load,โ says a strength coach. โYouโre supposed to brace and allow the belly to expand to stabilize correctly.โ
Bracing increases intra-abdominal pressure, keeps the spine protected, and helps transmit force during lifts. A chronically โflatโ stomach during a lift likely indicates poor mechanicsโor insufficient resistance to actually challenge the structure.
