Better Programming Comes From Better Movement Selection
Take side delt training. You might love dumbbell lateral raises or side-lying isolation variations. But eventually, you’ll hit a ceiling—you’re maxed out at 15 pounds and can’t make meaningful progress without compromising form.
That’s when machine variations shine.
Try a standing lateral raise machine, but face the opposite direction of the seat. This tweak lines up the resistance more directly with the lateral delts and avoids trap compensation.
This version allows larger incremental increases in load without losing the lateral head as the primary target. It keeps the muscle under tension, facilitates overload, and most importantly—it scales.

Move your feet slightly lower on the leg press or hack squat to keep the knee-dominant pattern. That ensures your quads generate the majority of torque. But the involvement of supporting muscles keeps you grinding out reps beyond the point of quad failure—without giving up form or control.
