The Soreness Paradox

If you train today, really really hard to the point that it’ll generate DOMS, your force production decline will be lowest, of course, the same day, within that same session. And then it gets progressively better and recovers. One of exercise science’s most consistent findings is that more hard sets typically equal more growth. However, most people can’t cram 30-plus quality sets for a muscle into a single workout without performance collapsing.

Spreading that volume across multiple days—taken to the extreme by training daily—may be the key.

Dr. Helms offered this insight on maximizing the approach:

You can absolutely do what we call a specialization cycle. First thing, train those specialized muscles. So, let’s say you decided that you wanted to do a deltoid specialization. You’d start your lower body days and your upper body days doing some lateral raises or overhead press first for two to three sets, and train them reasonably hard.

How to Apply This Without Living in the Gym

Training a muscle every single day requires serious commitment and planning. A smarter approach for most people? Specialization cycles.

Here’s how it works:

  • Choose one muscle group to prioritize (shoulders, arms, glutes, etc.)

Will chest press numbers suffer slightly when prioritizing shoulders? Yes. Will lateral raises performed after chest work be harder? Absolutely.
