Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr, the most decorated female CrossFit athlete in history, has officially confirmed she will compete at the 2025 CrossFit Games.

In a light-hearted Instagram video posted on June 24, Toomey-Orr ended months of speculation by announcing her return to the Games just 37 days before the event kicks off in Albany, New York.

After a year focused on HYROX competition and postpartum recovery, the 7-time champion is eyeing a record-breaking eighth title.

But her road back hasn’t been a straight line—and her return sets the stage for one of the most anticipated comebacks in CrossFit history.

From Doubt to Decision: Tia’s Uncertain Season

The lead-up to this announcement has been anything but typical for Toomey-Orr. After winning her seventh CrossFit Games title in 2023, she shifted her competitive focus to HYROX—a demanding endurance-based fitness sport combining running and functional strength events. Her transition raised immediate questions about whether she would continue in CrossFit.

By the time the 2025 Open arrived, Toomey-Orr admitted she hadn’t touched a barbell in months.

Her 144th-place finish worldwide in the Open was a stark contrast to her usual dominance. Still, the result landed her in the top 1%—enough to stay eligible for Games qualification.

Yet even as the season advanced, uncertainty lingered. She skipped the In-Affiliate Semifinals, further fueling rumors that her CrossFit career might be nearing its end.

Torian Pro Triumph: Qualifying, But Not Committing

Toomey-Orr eventually confirmed she would compete at the Torian Pro, a key qualifying event in her home country of Australia.

While she dominated the competition—winning five out of six events—her post-event remarks remained vague. Fans and analysts were left wondering if she would retire after Torian or accept her invitation to the Games.

Even Dave Castro, CrossFit’s programming lead, chimed in on the speculation. He mentioned on his “Week In Review” that Toomey-Orr had been given a deadline to accept her Games invite, though he declined to share when.

Health Setbacks at HYROX Worlds

Just weeks before her CrossFit commitment, Toomey-Orr competed at the 2025 HYROX World Championships—her main focus throughout the year.

She participated in the mixed doubles race with fellow Aussie James Newbury but was forced to withdraw from a second event due to illness.

“I was really looking forward to this weekend,” she said in a statement after pulling out. “But my body just didn’t cooperate the way I hoped.”

The setback, however, seemed to accelerate her decision regarding CrossFit.

The Announcement: “This Is Gonna Hurt”

On June 24, Toomey-Orr dropped the news in typical Tia fashion—understated but powerful.

In the Instagram video, she begins by expressing how difficult the decision had been, only to be interrupted by PRVN Fitness CEO Nic Johnston: “Tia, we only got 37 days until the Games; we gotta go.”

Toomey-Orr’s response?

“This is gonna hurt like a motherf****r.”

The quote instantly set CrossFit social media ablaze. The hashtag #ChasingEight began trending among fans and fellow athletes alike.

What Her Return Means for the Games

Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr’s return changes everything.

Her presence adds high-stakes drama to an already stacked women’s field. With 17 rookies qualified this year, the contrast between rising stars and the reigning queen creates a narrative-rich showdown.

More importantly, it highlights what might be her final run as a competitor. Whether she wins or not, this could be Toomey-Orr’s swan song—a career that has already included:

  • 7 CrossFit Games titles (most all-time for women)
  • 6 consecutive wins from 2017 to 2022
  • 2nd place in her debut (2015)
  • Participation in the Tokyo Olympics (weightlifting)

If she claims her eighth crown, she would break her current tie with Mat Fraser (7 titles) and stand alone as the most dominant athlete in CrossFit history—man or woman.

Looking Ahead to Albany

The 2025 CrossFit Games will be held at the MVP Arena in Albany, NY, from August 1–3.

The stage is now set.

Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr is not just returning to compete—she’s returning to make history.

For fans, it’s the ultimate what-if turned reality: What happens when the GOAT comes back, not because she has to, but because she still wants it?
