Why “Normal” Lab Ranges Aren’t Actually Normal
Lab reports categorize results one of two ways: in range or out of range, green or red.
The system makes logical sense on paper. But Lynch explains there’s a fundamental flaw built into how these ranges work.
Your result gets compared to that population, and it looks okay if it fits within their range. That population includes people who are tired, inflamed, and aging faster than they should.
Reference ranges come from population averages. If 95% of people fall within a given band, that band becomes “normal.”

Fitting inside that band doesn’t signal optimal health. It means resembling a tired, aging average.

Cardiovascular mortality risk tripled. Cancer mortality risk more than quadrupled.
At 242, I was only nine points below the 250 threshold. That is not comfortable. That’s too close for my comfort.
What Elevated MMA Actually Does Inside Your Body
Those mortality numbers aren’t random—there’s a clear mechanism behind them.
When an enzyme called MUT (methylmalonyl-CoA mutase) falls behind, two molecules accumulate: methylmalonyl-CoA and propionyl-CoA. Both bind to coenzyme A, effectively pulling it out of circulation.

Kidneys take a hit too. They filter and eliminate MMA, but chronic exposure associates with progressive kidney damage—slowly, without symptoms, until it becomes significant.
The cancer connection comes down to mitochondrial suppression. When mitochondria are chronically impaired, cells lose the ability to eliminate damaged components. Cells that should die keep living and dividing—creating an environment where cancer gains a foothold.

The Missing Nutrient Nobody Talks About
Lynch traced everything back to a single nutrient cofactor—a form of vitamin B12 his mitochondria were running short on without his knowledge.
He was overwhelming the MUT enzyme with too much odd-chain fat and protein, mostly from goat milk, goat cheese, and goat yogurt.

But there’s a third form almost nobody discusses.
Adenosylcobalamin: The B12 Form That Clears MMA
Adenosylcobalamin is the form of B12 required by the mitochondrial MUT enzyme. Without it, MUT can’t clear methylmalonyl-CoA out of mitochondria.

But labs showed him things he couldn’t feel or pinpoint.
How to Apply This to Your Own Labs
Start with a comprehensive panel. Lynch uses Function Health, which runs over 100 lab markers through Quest or LabCorp without requiring a doctor’s order.
When results arrive, don’t just look at flagged markers. Examine every marker.
Notice which ones are in range but parked near edges—top or bottom. Then look for themes.

Rules for Using This Approach Effectively
If a marker is in the disease range, take it seriously. Talk with your doctor immediately. The conventional system catches pathology well—use it when markers are already elevated.
If markers are borderline and you have symptoms, that’s where pattern reading earns value. Fatigue, brain fog, slow recovery, unresolved inflammation—look at markers near the top or bottom of ranges.
Most doctors aren’t trained to read labs this way. That’s not criticism—it’s simply not what conventional medicine was built for.
